Re: UNH Wildcats Official Wait til Next Year...14/15 thread

Downing with a true GWG, 'Cats win 2-1 in OT, extend their winning streak to 8, poke their heads just over .500, and are a win away from an improbable return trip to Boston for the HE Semis. Hard not to be excited about that ... possibility.

Still think this one goes 3 games, but I'll stick with my prediction. Winner of Game One advances.

Tirone apparently continuing to show us why Coach Umile went all in with him down the stretch.

Will wait to hear from the in-person attendees what their impressions of the game were ...

Re: UNH Wildcats Official Wait til Next Year...14/15 thread

FYI, Bruce Gilles May have enjoyed himself but he wasn't on the team when we brawled with the football team DownUnder, during semester break! Almost lost the whole team back then in 75!! I agree with Greg......Bruce wasn't even close to what some others did.....a totally different era back then, for sure! Congrats Wildcats on a huge win tonight......

Re: UNH Wildcats Official Wait til Next Year...14/15 thread

Great win. One more and on to the Garden. They now have two potent lines and a good third line.

Zoofer, not talking about him enjoying himself. He's just not a good dude and I'm ok with him not being associated with the program.

Put the pom-pom down!

Ha! Willows had a great chance to tie the game when he went in alone on Gillies with 2.5 minutes left, and Kelleher converted on PP about a minute later. But, point taken, as Tirone is standing on his head tonight. Friars up 42-23 SOG in regulation. Great game! Forgot to mention earlier that UNH fans may be outnumbered, but we have the cowbell.

My other team going to OT also tonight, 0-0.

Awesome to chat apres le match sir! Also UNHJourney34!!! Go 'Cats!

Moi??

Moi??

Put the pom-pom down!

Sorry. :o It's pretty difficult to find something to moan about after tonight's OT win.

Two straight losses over the weekend would damper the enthusiasm pretty quickly though.

I'm also pretty psyched Lowell pushed NICC back to the precipice of HE extinction. Let the good times roll!! :D

Last four games Gillies has finished against UNH, 1-3 record and in the fifth was losing 2-0 when pulled for an injury and PC came back to lose in OT...not good numbers

Gillies is a great goalie, but Tirone stole the game for UNH, which was totally outplayed by PC in the second and third periods. UNH young D-men, including Quast, also did a fine job clearing pucks away from the crease, even if they were mostly thwarted in their efforts to carry the puck out of the UNH zone in the second and third periods. Finally, the first line seniors do not want their college careers to end just yet and never quit on Friday night. And, Kelleher was stellar.

Another Garden party would be a blast. Nothing like a hot goalie to thwart all those SOG!

Re: UNH Wildcats Official Wait til Next Year...14/15 thread

Chuck *wins* because despite all this statistical hogwash, UNH finished 8th in the league (and that was with a late push to get them out of 10th/11th where they spent most of the season), and just with the last game finally got to the exalted .500 level.

As the noted philosopher Herm Edwards once so succinctly said ... "You play to win the game". And SOG's win you nothing. Just a meaningless statistical diversion. This is hockey - not baseball.

Just for kicks ... go check out the SOG for/against data on the 1980's Edmonton Oilers, and let me know what you find. :)

Here's one for ya, first one I looked at from the Bruins page:

http://bruins.nhl.com/gamecenter/en/boxscore?id=2014020138

Tried to find box scores for the Dave Lumley, offense first Oilers, but way too tedious. You and I both know those days of prolific scoring in the NHL and in college hockey would result in high SOG numbers. Not relevant to today's defense first approach. Take a look at the Jacques Lemaire era at NJ or Claude Julien and you'll find more relevant stats more reflective of today's defense(keep SOG #'S to a minimum) first approach!

BTW, that approach doesn't always work. Last nights game with the Friars is a perfect example! Tirone stood in his head to give UNH a chance to win in OT. To equate that win with the fact that UNH was outshot by a ton would be a gross misinterpretation of the reality.

Clearly PC outplayed UNH last night, which is supported by the SOG imbalance. But, Tirone was incredible, sending over half his saves into the corners, smothering another quarter, with his D-men clearing the remainder. Tirone never saw the only goal he have up, as he was screened by at least three bodies after making the initial save.

As noted, the only game of the eight straight wins in which the Cats did not score first. Say what you want about Merrimack and UConn, but BU and PC are quality teams that UNH beat in this run.

The other Div 1 team that has a hot freshman goaltender at the moment is St Lawrence. Will be interesting to see how far these two hot goalies can take their teams this post-season. And, Gillies not too shabby either.

And, finally, people laugh about Umile whistling for his line changes; lesson learned by the Friars last night.

Thanks for that analysis 65, Obviously, having a hot goalie this time of year is huge! Also, a very good sign that they won a low scoring game and one in which the other team scored first as you noted. Wish tonights game was on TV but I'll be listening!

e.cat watch it on that hockeyeastonlinetv feed or whatever that link was a few threads back. We were late last night and I watched the first in the car good feed (PC announcers but they are good prefer Dan P of course!). Goooo 'Cats!!

Yeah we will take that whistling any day thank you very much!! And I agree who cares about the quality of the competition with these 8 wins when you are looking at a team that had so much to deal with from the get go. And sprinkle in beating other ranked teams like UNO, BU etc makes it all the better. Onto tonight reality check!! 😉

Sitting where we did on the glass in the corner we had DT 10 feet away for two periods let me tell you it was amazing the work he did along with some very timely D clears...the kid did indeed steal this game. Froshies Marks and Furgele played their butts off along with the others (Quast and Cleland) to give us the most improbable of wins for this young team. "8 straight and it sure feels great" but obviously we have to finish it....Goooo ''Cats!!
Ps it's great to have Dylan Maller back in that line up

UNH outplayed Providence in the first period, beating them to loose pucks, maintaining possession in the offensive zone, and transitioning. PC looked a little flat. UNH managed to withstand PC's onslaught in the second and third periods. Difficult to imagine the Friars playing any better than they did - well, except for that line change blunder. I can't remember the last time a UNH goalie made so many key saves in a playoff game.

Speaking of memorable, here's Tyler Kelleher showing Gillies something he doesn't see very often:
