Norbert, why the Dictator Dean label? The guy is charged with protecting 10-12,000 people and try to keep them safe. Trust we all know that if a couple of students or employees became critically ill or worst, it would be him that was called to answer for this. It was a new experience, still appears to be, so when in doubt take precautions.
Also will agree that the mask wearing did fall of a bit over time. But in my opinion it picked back up recently. As we got a couple of nice size crowds the newbies appeared to be more compliment. Why make the work study kids crazy trying to do their jobs.

Au contraire, mon ami.

Dean Dean is charged with educating the student population, and managing personnel within a budget. All staff and most of the students are adults, so they each have the right and responsibility to take care for their own safety. We sent our kids to UNH a decade ago (give or take), and it was the furthest thought from our minds that we were sending them over to be babysat as if they were infants. College is supposed to be where they learn to be adults, not extended playtime for teenagers. Also, if one of our kids were to catch the Wuhan Flu while they were students, I can assure you we wouldn't be demanding CSI-Oyster River to do contact tracing to hunt down the suspect(s) - as if it were even possible (and it isn't).

Oh, and BTW none of this was a "new experience" for folks like myself and Norbert (and e.cat and many others) who were around when the last pandemic blew out of the Orient Virus Incubator that was/is China, infecting the rest of the world. Funny thing is, back then, adults had fought a couple of wars as young adults, and didn't wet their pants at the possibility of their kids coming down with the flu. Then as now, risk resided in the elderly and infirm. Look it up and learn, it's all there.

So if you want to live your life according to "when in doubt, take precautions", knock yourself out, it's your right to live the way you want. However, it's not your right, much less the Feds, state nor UNeffingH's right to impose that standard on me, nor anyone else for that matter.

Sorry, it's nothing personal, but you were just the poor sap who hit me with the last "safety first" lecture after tolerating two full years of collective group cowardice. Rest assured, all is good between me and Dean Dean, so long as he hires the right new AD, and the aforementioned new AD fixes UNH Hockey as Job One. Not asking for much, just extreme competence. :-)

When someone in charge of that many people unilaterally makes decisions, it’s a dictatorship. All the testing and expense, no Trustee buy-in. You live in NE or NY and get Covid, home you go even though you have a housing contract.

The population at UNH isn’t the demographic getting sick or dying.

I’ve been to a Bruins game after Mayor Wu went nuts with rules and no one followed it. Police and employees didn’t care. Just left a Florida Panthers game and guarantee that the 15000 people there who were not wearing masks will be ok. But back to Durham and it’s mask up

As more evidence of the dictatorship at the Lowell game the people in the President suite were not wearing masks. So is it everyone wears a mask except players and his guests?

Should have read and just pointed up to this. Maybe from now on I’m just going to fill in write-in spots on all ballots for Chuck.

Unless there is some uncomfortableness with any decisions going forward it will be more of the same.

Dean was hired to be a fundraiser. Which is ironic as he’s blowing through money with his rules

I'm glad you brought these points up, Norbert. First, let's start with the definition of "mandate":

mandate
[ˈmanˌdāt]
NOUN
  1. an official order or commission to do something.
These rules were never laws nor ordinances, which require going through a legislative process, and therefore implemented by folks who were voted into their legislative roles by the general populace. For the most part, they were executive overreaches by folks in charge of their little fiefdoms, and usually justified as being in the general interests of the people of said fiefdom. Except, of course, no one bothers to ask those people for permission - it's just enacted, and folks are expected to comply. Not too far from the dictatorship you described earlier, Norbert.

An all-too-typical justification that was used by many organizations was the all-encompassing "liability" argument, as in, "we can't risk doing something that might expose our residents/students/whatever, or else we can be held liable". It's probably something that many on here believe to be true ... but guess what? That's totally overblown, too. In my professional life, my organization (like many in our industry) set up detailed units, teams and protocols for the anticipated flood or litigation which would flow from scenarios like this (i.e. organization doesn't take proper precautions, someone dies, someone sues said organization). Well, that flood hasn't happened. The problem is (and always was going to be) that tracing where one "gets" the virus is a lot more difficult legally than you might think. Sure, if 50 people drop dead in a month at your nursing home which took infected patients in (the so-called "Cuomo Scenario"), that's strong circumstantial proof. But if there are two people on the UNH campus who get it, then good luck coming up with a compelling proof (and guessing isn't allowed). Cases like that are routinely dismissed because they lack the key tort element of provable proximate cause.

I'm sure there were many people of good faith who truly thought they were doing the right thing initially, but any pretense that there was any truly firm "science" behind a lot of this crap disappeared for me (and many many others) in the Spring and Summer of 2020, when we had riots all over the country for this cause and that cause, with thousands of people taking to the streets without masks. Suddenly, if the cause was "right", then masking was optional, which flew in the face of what was expected elsewhere (see the 2020 college football season) even afterwards. And more and more, there were sightings of celebrities and mayors and other politicians who during the day were preening Karens, but at night broke their own rules.

I had strong opinions of the situation two years ago when it first broke out over here, but for about 90 days I decided to withhold further commentary until the situation had developed further, and more clarity was available. That clarity arrived in Spring/Summer 2020 (see above), and I've been living a completely normal mask-free life since then. Thank God we live in NH, where that's been possible, and not in MA, where the differences are still stark. I did allow myself to get the first series of shots in early '21, but with the way data on boosters has been warped and withheld, those will not be happening for me.

Anyway, that's enough time spent on rants last night and today. Enjoy the weekend, folks.

Oh yeah? How? I am kind of blind to how the standings are going for others...I think its also a big game for us as we hope BC loses to BU etc (assuming one cares about that home ice thingy)

Yes Ref we need a BU sweep. This team has so many facets but here’s hoping we get a great 2 or 3 games. And I absolutely hope we get home ice and I’ll be there.
Question for Chuck, remind me of that flu that took over 1 million of us. Please hold it to one sentence with both the date and number of Americans lost. No need for your “Chuck “ facts and 8 paragraphs. Thanks This is a Fan Forum not an I believe.
 
Chuck, did I just walk into the USCHO Cafe'? Uh, oh! I thought ANY talk of this pandemic, the response and fact based discussions MUST BE done in the Cafe', no where else. It appears that you are discussing old "right-wing" talking points the Cafe' Basement denizens belittled and disproved long ago. :-) :-) :-) :-)

(come to think of it, so how come most turned out to be factual? My bad, don't believe your lying eyes, it's about feelings. Time to get back to living life, and happily paying $5 for gas, must defend democracy. I am just truly happy we dont have to put up with mean tweets any longer, those are bad and can lead to serious world conflicts.)

ATW - I am sure a reasoned response would be difficult to compress to a single sentence, especially for Chuck. Are we up over a 1 million now? Must have accelerated quite a bit since Jan 2021, like most everything else in life these days, during our "Adult now in charge return to normalcy." :-)

Had to familiarize myself with how the playoffs work but I'm seeing now that if the season ended today UNH would host BC for a winner advances to the next round game. Needing to beat BC of all teams makes me groan, but feels like a winnable game given how they've looked as of late. Maybe that would send UNH into the next round with some momentum.

So we're rooting for the Terriers this weekend. After the roller coaster that was last weekend I'll be extra curious to see how UNH looks on Saturday night. After looking at the schedule this year I think it's fair to say they perform much better the 2nd night of the weekend. They lay and egg the first night, the defibrillator comes out and they seem to find life the second night.

With only one game this weekend, will they show up for it?

Yup, this all really happened. You might ask, "Why don't I know this already?" Simple - ask your teachers, who didn't teach you these things. Ask the media, who suppressed this (highly relevant) history of flu to scare the crap out of anyone not old enough to remember first-hand, all just because they let their political preferences & agendas interfere with objective news.

I believe these two very similar prior flu events are called facts. Over to you, ATW ...
