UNH Wildcats 2019 Offseason - How Much Progress Did We Really Make This Past Season?

IF I were a B's fan … my only - ONLY - concern is that their 3 series up to this point have been getting easier and easier. We might all look back at the end of this and figure that the opening series against Toronto, and having to dig out of that hole, was their toughest challenge along the road to the Cup.

True. But whose fault is that? Only a moronic playoff system (something you have been vocal about regarding Hockey East. :D ) which pits the #2 and #3 seeds against each other in the FIRST round because of some stupid “division” (as opposed to conference) “significance”. As a result there were what (and I’m not going back to the standings to check) - three wild card teams still left recently? They can olny play the teams they’re told to play. :)

Congrats to your B's, and most notably on your bold yet accurate 4-0 prediction! :)

Well I knew I was making a bold statement there...glad for once I had it right. Not so sure on the SCF but, we'll take it one game at a time. Bring it Bruins!!! :D Very proud of our UNH South crew and hope their success continues...

Re: UNH Wildcats 2019 Offseason - How Much Progress Did We Really Make This Past Seas

Understood. I've said since after the first round that it looked like this was the B's Cup to win. I will say, the San Jose-St. Louis series has been far more compelling competitively from the outset. Whomever emerges from that war is likely to give the B's their biggest challenge since the Toronto series. And if they can nick a game in Boston due to the B's being rusty, it could turn into an interesting Final, against the grain of a kind of blah/meh playoff season to date.

As far as divisions or conferences … I'm not sure that's the big issue, chickod. I remember when DRW were in the midst of their run in the late '90's/early '00's, and it would often turn out that there would be one or even two series in the Western Conference that would be more challenging than whomever emerged from the East. Back then, the Wings, Avs, and pretty decent Stars and Blues teams always seemed to be potential obstacles. And the Wings-Avs thing was something that the NHL hasn't seen since the strike. Facing the Flyers, Caps and 'Canes of that era in the SCF was almost an afterthought.

It was a lopsidedly strong West in those days, with really only the Devils who were a constant Eastern threat, but with the rise of Pittsburgh, Washington, the B's, TB and a couple others … and the fall of Chicago and the LA Kings more recently (plus the Avs falling off a cliff, and DRW doing the same in a new conference) I think the NHL tilts slightly to the East these days. And if the Wings (or Avs) could step through those all-out wars to take care of a weak SCF opponent from the East back then, there's no reason the B's can't overcome a few extra days off to overcome a solid/strong but hardly dominant Western team this year.

Still rooting for St. Louis as the last Cup-less franchise from the first wave of expansion, but suspect it will be SJS facing the B's in the end, and the B's prevailing in either 6 or 7 games.

Do you remember the 2 seasons when the NHL had straight 1-16 seeding and reseeded after every round?

Not particularly, and I get what your point probably is. Seedings mean less in hockey than in any other sport due to the more "random" nature of the game, so you will likely say that seedings have not "held" just as many times as they have.

Fair enough :)

JvR reports on Twitter that his brother BvR graduated from UNH today. Just some UNH news to report since the Bruins aren’t playing...
Wishing you well Brendan; thanks for 3 great years.

Did his older brothers complete credits to graduate? If not, BvR has that degree over them even he does not reach the NHL.

Mookie recalls one yr b's were 1 and pens 16
No Bruins #1 - Penguins #16 ever happened, but a Bruins #4 - Penguins #13.

You give me too much credit as I was just pointing out that the NHL did use a straight 1-16 seeding and then reseed after each round once but decided not to keep it. I'm sure the number of east-west series in the first three rounds played a part in the decision. The went to divisional seeding next, before going to conference seeding and then to the current divisional/wildcard seeding.

If I could copy the tweet JvR jokes that between the 3 of them it took 8 years but he (BvR) gets the degree? Or something like that...

Love this picture! Well I don't know the specifics...just what I read. Maybe he walked yesterday, no clue. I guess he (BvR) has a couple of courses to finish up this summer...I can see why he might not have been featured with this picture seeing how he wasn't really a 'Senior'? Anyway...he's moving on (as we all know). Kind of like Rich Boyd last year...was a “Senior” but you never saw him in Senior pics (at the end anyway)?

Good point. I'm sure JvR (set to earn in the mid-to-high 8 figures over his career) and TvR (likely to sneak into the low 8 figures by the time he's finished) are gonna be hurting without their degrees. ;)

Re: UNH Wildcats 2019 Offseason - How Much Progress Did We Really Make This Past Seas

Maybe can earn 9 figures with NU MBA? :-)

Wondering who the biggest bandwagon jumper has been - BvR (Northeastern) or Agosta (Quinnipiac)?

Interesting how they don't end up at Dartmouth, Brown or Princeton if it's really just for the academics ...

Re: UNH Wildcats 2019 Offseason - How Much Progress Did We Really Make This Past Seas

The Ivy League has a blanket rule banning kids from playing a fifth year, even if the NCAA says they're still eligible to play they can't play for an Ivy. Wouldn't have stopped BvR since he legitimately graduated in 3 years but it would stop 99% of grad transfers, almost all of them have attended their prior school for 4 years regardless of how much eligibility got used in that time. Agosta for example could not have gone to an Ivy.

This is also why BU keeps getting transfers from Ivy schools (Willman, Tucker, etc.) Those kids HAVE to transfer away from their old school to play their fifth year. Bliss at UMass and Lackey at PC also went Ivy to Hockey East for that reason.

So I guess Agosta gets a slightly higher "adversity score" since he had less options as a 5th year senior. :D

Hey, at least the kid sleeping at his seat is attending class, the only one!

Agosta only played eight games with the ECHL Monarchs this season; did he get hurt?

His last year at UNH was slightly more productive than his year at Quinnipiac. Played for five different teams during 2016/17 season, albeit only one game each for three of the teams.
