Snives, SOG 29-18

Re: UNH Wildcats 2019/2020 Ready to Rock and Roll!!

Blackburn down hard after a cheap knee at center ice. Had to be helped off. Miami guy takes a major and is gone for game. Rest of game on PP.

Looked bad for Blackburn

Miami major penalty with 4:15 to play. Buffet style for the rest of the night...

Re: UNH Wildcats 2019/2020 Ready to Rock and Roll!!

By the way, while the barn is very nice, it’s makes the Whitt’s energy look off the charts. Had it not been for that last goal, it was quiet enough for a quick nap.

I had the same thought while at the game. The crowd/band/music were virtually non-existent (excluding Miami goals).

UNH Hockey great Darren Haydar to be inducted into the AHL Hall of Fame...

ps...looking him up on hockeydb...wow...what a player...so bummed I missed out. Dang, the goals the guy scored every season!!!

Darren was so spectacular when he played at UNH. He could score from any angle around net, clever passer, and worker. Great family as well. We were fortunate enough to visit with the Haydars last April when we took a side trip to Toronto prior to the FF in Buffalo. Darren and his family are back in the hometown of Milton, Ontario, involved in real estate and, of course, still involved in hockey, coaching a bantam team. One of the all time greats.

Re: UNH Wildcats 2019/2020 Ready to Rock and Roll!!

Always thought that the Atlanta Thrashers should have given Haydar more than the dozen or so games for his 1 goal plus 7 assists NHL totals. But, what a great AHA player he was, including being captain of the Chicago Wolves Calder Cup championship team in 2007-08, with former UNH teammate Jason Krog centering his line.

And, Robbie Ftorek also is being inducted into the AHA HOF with Haydar. Hmmm, what connection does Ftorek have with UNH? Greg Ambrose knows.

Well, he was teammates with Cap Raeder at Needham HS. Somewhere out there in the video stratosphere there is dvd of Eastern Mass. high school hockey from its true heyday, mid sixties to mid seventies. The dvd is somewhat Middlesex League and Bay State League centric (interviews with Umile and Raeder throughout). In it Raeder talks about how Ftorek continually prodded him during the summer to get off his butt and practice. He admits, a bit self deprecating I think, that if it wasn't for Ftorek that he probably wouldn't have played college hockey. Which leads to the story about how he wound up at UNH, straight from Charlie Holt. Raeder graduated from Needham HS in '72. That March, Charlie, Dave O'Connor and Bob Norton sat down one Sunday morning and perused the hockey all scholastics in the Globe and Herald and saw that Raeder made both teams. Charlie decided, we need to recruit this kid. Mind you, this is less than six months before he would have to enroll at UNH. So they made a couple of calls, drove down to Needham, met with the coach (who I am sure they all knew), Cap and his parents and, within side of a week he was signed up. That's how arguably the best goaltender (along with Ty Conklin) in UNH history wound up in Durham. Far cry from today.

Btw, Ftorek was the best high school player I ever saw (Bobby Carpenter was second). He was magic. His hockey brain was so far ahead of that of the average high school kid. He was born to be a hockey player (although he was a great soccer player too), nothing else.

Re: UNH Wildcats 2019/2020 Ready to Rock and Roll!!

I forget what year it was that UNH played out there, 2011 or 2012 (Goumas was freshman), but the place was rockin' back then. Our small UNH contingent, maybe 25 or 30, was pretty upset because the school hadn't set aside seats for us. Someone talked to Umile after the game and the next night we had good seats on the blue line. That was a fun weekend.

Re: UNH Wildcats 2019/2020 Ready to Rock and Roll!!

That was 2010-11 and the teams traded 6-3 victories to open the season. They’d meet again in the first-round of the NCAA Tournament which UNH won before losing to Notre Dame in the regional final...

It was a different time, with both teams amongst the National elite. Miami’s student body isn’t a rabid fan base by any means - give them a winner (Wally World, Big Ben, Hockey a few years back) and they’ll show up in droves for the good time - but if not, they’ll stay home and watch OSU, UM, ND or UK on the tube. It’s too bad because the new Goggin is a wild place to watch a game when it’s full (as is the Whitt)...

Give UNH students credit - while the student section is not as wild (or as over-flowed) as it was in the UNH hey dey they still show up and the Whitt’s attendance concerns aren’t really student related (more so general population). I wish Miami had that.

Hopefully tonight will be better (though early results won’t help) as it’s not an easy place to get to on a Friday night for fans from Cincy or Dayton, etc...

UNH dominated last night against a Miami team that Hs really struggled to contain any forward lines through two games - Miami has surrendered odd man rush after odd man rush en route to a 6.5 GAA through two games now...

UNH especially abused Miami’s bigger defenders using quickness to attack them relentlessly - Bray Crowder in particular who took three penalties and was a minus-2 on the night...

First test of the year for UNH - can you do that two nights in a row? Can you step on the throat of a team on the mat? Miami has to be looking at this game as a (personal) statement game - they need an effort to convince themselves they can be competitive or it could be a long year...

It’s likely Kraws gets a start for Miami. I wonder if Taylor plays for UNH or they wait until next weekend at Bentley...

Good points all around Dan...no doubt Miami is going to bring it and how UNH responds will be important..hoping noone gets hurt in the process. Any word on Blackburn? Agree Robbie gets the start. Hoping to be able to watch this one around the campfire!! Go 'Cats!!

For his second penalty, Crowder full-on bear-hugged one of our forwards, lifted him off the ice and horizontal to the ground, and dropped him. Right in the corner in front of UNH fan section. It was ridiculous. Guy was frustrated all night.

Re: UNH Wildcats 2019/2020 Ready to Rock and Roll!!

Miami comes out firing, shots are 62 RedHawks early - but UNH scores on the PP against the run of play and leads 1-0. Crookshank’s first of the year, from Gildon and Grasso...

Miami now to a PP of their own...
