Re: UNH Wildcats 2017 Off-season: The Clash Question

You da man. :D You were missed - glad to have you back. :)

So ... is it time to discuss selections for next year's captains yet, or what?

My take - having Cleland in charge this season was huge in the 4 win uptick (11 to 15). Discuss ... ???

Banquet is April 22 I believe...Eiserman has my vote. And given that there are more Seniors (7 I believe without thinking too much about it) wonder if they will give out a 'A' or two...Some are talking Cam Marks as well.

My first thought about Eiserman as Captain is that he gets injured a lot, and misses a lot of games, so there would need to be two Assistant Captains available, I think, to listen to the zebras yak about their take on penalties, etc. But, what do I know, as I thought that TyK would have been a good Co-Captain with Cleland this past season. Did TyK miss any games over his four years?

FYP. (sorry, pet peeve)

Agreed Snively65 - I don't think it would be on par with the disastrous decision the team made season before last ... but IMHO Eiserman has not only been sidelined quite a bit over his career, but I would also argue that he has underachieved during the time he has been on the ice. That's a tough combination to support for a "C", and *maybe* a more realistic choice for an "A"? Interestingly, there are a few players who "broke through" this past season after nondescript frosh and soph seasons, and I suspect that prevents them from "C" too.

I don't have the insight into the personalities that HR might have, though, but here are my initial thoughts on the various possibilities in alphabetical order (hopefully to stir up some discussion):

Richard Boyd (D): Doubtful (injuries). If he were somehow to be selected, it would be MacDonald Mach II
Dylan Chanter (D): Unlikely. Didn't see much ice time for two seasons (DNP - coach's decisions - not injuries)
Shane Eiserman (F): Possible "C", probable "A". Regular contributor for all 3 seasons; injuries/underachiever?
Cam Marks (D): My selection for the "C". Regular contributor for all 3 seasons, on top pairing this past season
Michael McNicholas (F): Unlikely for "C", dark horse for "A". Part timer for first 2 years; past disciplinary issues?
Jason Salvaggio (F): Dark horse for "C", possible "A". See McNicholas above, without past disciplinary issues (?)
Danny Tirone (G): Possible "C", probable "A". Regular first choice goalie since arrival; goalies don't get "C"'s?

It will also be interesting to see if Coach Souza has any input this season - not that this would be shared with us - or in future seasons. My recollection is Coach Umile supposedly tried to steer clear of injecting himself in this process (please jump to correct me if I'm wrong about that), which was one of my big beefs about how he stood by and let the team's curious 2015/2016 captaincy decision stand. If you're truly in charge, I can't envision standing aside and watching an obvious (and avoidable) mistake taking place on your watch.

Three and a half weeks and we'll all know. Then we wait to see if "Cupcake Palooza III" happens or not ...

Hockey East early departures so far:

Colin White/BC
Clayton Keller/BU
Jake Walman/Providence
Tage Thompson/UCONN
Tyler Mueller/UML ???
CJ Smith/UML ???

Charlie McAvoy/BU - just announced by Sweeny according to BU thread.

That makes 5 BU departures (only 4 scholarship types) with seven, maybe eight, incoming freshman scheduled...

Keep those departures coming; make UNH great again! Or, at least increase the likelihood for the NRN for DU (writes the guy who earlier predicted single digit wins for next season).

Hmmm, okay. Not a surprise there, right?

Did I miss three other early BU players? Must have if you say so!

Doesn't hurt right?

Likely Marks to get the C as more commonly the C seems to sit on a Dman's jersey when there is not a clear leader at forward. I too question whether Eiserman will remain healthy for the season. While that is not really a reason to keep a letter off of him, it may be what keeps him from getting the C. Taking playing time (over all three seasons) out of the thinking process you have to admire what Salvaggio did with his opportunity to play with the top line last year. I realize who was on his other wing and that certainly helps but he lit up the score sheet and did a lot of things you do not see on the score sheet. Point being I do not see him as a dark horse candidate given his attitude and ability that was held back in his first two years.

If we are going 1 C, 2 A's. My prediction is Marks then Eiserman and Salvaggio. Not necessarily how I would pick things but that is my best guess. I have been wrong before... And if anyone outside of the team says they guessed the Captains from two years ago they probably also predicted the 1980 Miracle on ice, The Patriots Super Bowl comeback, and the Bruins 3 goal comeback against the leafs in 2013..

I like to see Dmen get the C but agree with you about Salvaggio. Scored some big goals down the stretch!

I know Chuck doesn't believe me but I did speculate that Captain choice. I dunno why but I just had a feeling about it. That being said...no, I didn't predict the other things you mention but I was not surprised on the choice...believe it..or not. :D;) I agree Marks is a strong choice and also think Jason S has alot of character/could be an "A" choice if they do decide to go with the "A"'s. (and I hope they do).
