UNH Wildcats 2016 Offseason Thread - Searching for Direction

Re: UNH Wildcats 2016 Offseason Thread - Searching for Direction

Merrimack just released its schedule.

Over/under

Over = UNH will release its schedule before more (not necessarily the same) teams that finish below the Cats in the final HEA standings.

Under = UNH releases its schedule before fewer (not the same) teams that finish below the Cats in the final HEA standings.

Example, in previous over/under, Chuck picked UNH to finish 10th, so in this over/under he would choose the over if he thinks UNH releases its schedule before three or more other HEA teams.

I know, blame it all on Frozen Fenway. Gag.

"That which does not kill us makes us stronger." Nietzsche

Not always .... but sometimes.

Well done Mr. Desmith

We will never know whether Mr. Umile engaged in a rush to judgment in your situation .... and arguments for and against are now counterproductive.

I certainly wish him well for the 2016-2017 season ....

Re: UNH Wildcats 2016 Offseason Thread - Searching for Direction

Good for him. What happened in the past is yesterday's business, done and dusted. What he does with his new opportunities is all that matters going forward. If he's learned from his past failings and/or poor judgment, and it's made him a better, more focused player AND person, then that's all that really matters.

Re: UNH Wildcats 2016 Offseason Thread - Searching for Direction

Thanks Ref for the article about Casey. I wish him the best.

I also saw the sad note that sonar is giving up hockey tickets for new seats at stadium. I am a season ticket holder for both and unhappily paid 900 dollars for 5 games with seat backs near the 40 yard line. I paid 120 dollars last year per seat for 6 games. I have been a fan of UNH football for years and 450 dollars for two seats and 5 games is not the same as 618 dollars for 2 seats to 18-20 men's hockey games. The talent level in hockey is far greater than our football program even when we are winning 11 games and it is far more exciting. Even 8-12 year old kids prefer our hockey team to watching football as they see it as boring as do 80% of the fans who buy tickets and get drunk in the parking lot. Athletics is selling bench seating on the new side for 175 dollars per seat without a parking pass. My seats come with a parking pass for every 2 seats with seat backs and they are not yet sold out (that is 600-650 seats total). The club seats are selling well and I do hope that the stadium is full but the product is nowhere near our hockey team as it never has been and never will be. My seats from last year on the now visitors side sell for 175 dollars for 5 games. This is a one year deal as they need to be in compliance with ADA soon. I hope our football team is very competitive this year and I will be rooting for them.

I know there are true haters of Umile and the hockey program out there and I know many of you think you could do a lot better. We have excellent talent coming in as top hockey schools have recruited against us for some of the incoming players and there are none of our football players that were offered D1 (BCS) scholarships that I am aware of. Coach Mac is great and I am sorry they did not put seat backs for all of the seats on the new home side. Apparently, they ran out of money. It is sad that we always come up short for our nationally competitive teams. You can buy 5 games for 95 dollars on the visitors side without seatbacks and those are the seats that will likely be sold and they will all be sitting in the seatbacks I had last year as few of those will be sold for 35 dollars per seat per game. When you come to your seat and someone with 95 dollar tickets when you paid 225 for yours, will lead to the same animosity as we have at the hockey rink.

Please reconsider if you are giving up your hockey tickets as we need everyone possible to continue the fan base. It would be great if they lowered the prices for men's hockey season ticket holders as we are a bit higher than average in hockey east while we are no longer a top 4 team every year as we were for 20+ years. I like Lowell's pricing best as prime seats are 245, faculty staff are 195, senior citizens are 180 and children are 130. I believe ticket sales would increase dramatically if the admin would buy into a model like Lowell's. BU, BC and Notre Dame have season tickets close to or a little bit higher than our tickets. Vermont (a little higher) and Maine (255-325)are fairly close to our current pricing structure with differential pricing. Merrimack is an aberration as there ticket prices are as high as BU's best seats. The rough average for all hockey east schools is about 280-285 dollars. Northeastern, CT, Amherst, Providence and Lowell are well below the average. State schools rough average is about 250-255 dollars.

Danny Tirone is a very good goalie with a save percentage above .906 last year with a very porous defense. I hope our defense improves early in the season. Most of the schedule is now public (there are a couple AHA teams not yet announced on hockey schedule thread) and we will need Danny and Adam to be at their best early on, but the defensemen will be better in the defensive zone. I cannot say that our offense will click from day 1, but I believe we will score a lot of goals in the first half of the season and hopefully that will breed confidence.

The top two defensive pairings are probably set and I hope Maller is healthy and Chanter gets a legitimate chance.

There is a lot of offensive talent and maybe the coaches will think outside of the box this year. Will they play a freshman on the first line? Senior on fourth line? Will Salvaggio with one of the best shots on the team get top 6 slot? Will McNicholas have a breakout year with his immense offensive talent and will he play better defense in the zone? I know some of you would prefer they play the freshmen on the first line and there are 3-4 top end freshmen with offensive talent and Blackburn will likely be a top 6 and maybe others. Andrew Poruralski was a huge loss who played through injury the entire second half of the season and in the AHL. It kills me when people on the board belittle his talents. He was worth 4+ additional wins and kept us competitive even when all teams were brutally assaulting him on a regular basis. Thank you Andrew for being an All-American your sophomore year at UNH. Please send your relatives/friends from the Buffalo area to UNH and good luck in the NHL.

I know the players read the UNH thread more than they should and I laughed when they brought up a few usernames (a few that use their real name) and mentioned that they need to get a life and they know nothing about hockey and with fans like that who needs enemies. They know we are mostly novices when it comes to hockey and appreciate the true fans both at home and on the road. I will miss all of the graduating seniors from last year as they are fine young men who worked hard on the ice and in the classroom. Thankfully, they all have a sense of humor and leave loving UNH, Durham and the fans for such a wonderful experience. Good luck to you all in Europe, AHL, ECHL and further educational endeavours. Best to you all and your families.

I hope I will see you all at the Whit this fall. I hope they have less TV games and please get off to a great start Coach Umile, Coach Souza and Coach Stuart. Maybe we can get to 600 this year and if you win 24 games the Whit will not be empty.

What is the capacity of the renovated Cowell Stadium, assuming that is still the name? When we were kids, we would sneak into football games through the woods to the south, as no one seemed to care. Ditto for UNH hockey games in the outdoor Batchelder rink. I agree that hockey is much more fun to watch than football.

Season tickets for anything in Durham are not in the cards for me, as I am between 75 and 90 miles away, to south or north, and Friday evening hockey games are especially problematic from the south, as the 75 miles can take 2.5-3.5 hours one way, depending on road conditions. But, I probably will get to my usual 5 or 6 games at Lake Whitt on Saturday nights or vacation periods, and another 7 to 8 away games. Add one to two more if we get back to the Garden. Sadly, not like the old days when more post-season games were the norm.

I wish that I could share your enthusiasm for the incoming freshman class, but I will wait and see on that. I would like to see Blackburn on the first line with Kelleher. At least the frosh should get more ice time for a change, given the clearing out of slots left by five seniors and limited competition from the upcoming senior class, other than TyK and Cleland. So, I suspect that your over/under on projections for wins, goals scored, and goals given up are more optimistic than mine and Chuck's.

Well, I'd say there is a big distinction between "knowing something about UNH hockey", and "knowing something about hockey". On the former, I don't want or need to know -- get it together and show up with a winning product! On the later, there are, in fact, many here who are NOT novices and know very well what we're looking at. So, not a legit assumption there...

So, I'm speaking with my feet on season tickets; first time since 1990 I will bail, which is effectively saying to the entire program (top-to-bottom!) "prove it to me!!" You want my praise, loyalty, attention and $$..."prove it to me!!"

Guess I'm spoiled cuz I lived thru the good years; the "rise", if you will. But also thru the "fall", and that little adventure has been pathetic.

And for me, I beg for MORE TV games, cuz I'm a sucker for punishment and will always be keeping track from the corners of the WBIN/NESN eyes!

I have no connection with WaP except as a reader.

Most likely a very fair assessment; there's a lot that needs to come together. By the time this game comes around we will have a fairly good idea about what's what. I hope the coaches do not hesitate to take some risks with the lines; I mean, why not? This incoming class he speaks of...coupled with potential offensive threats in McNick, Eiserman, and Nazarian, (and lest I forget TyK) we could put it in the net. And D wise we will continue to work on that ;) while his leaning on AC in net made for interesting reading.

I suspect this view of the 'Cats is how most must see them. I won't play the 'over / under' game as I'd be pathetic at it but I will venture we will do 'better than expected'. How's that for over/under?!? :p

Adam Clark was the starter in fall 2014 and it was Tirone that came in early and played all but a few games since then. It will be interesting to see who are featured netminder will be this fall. I did not ask if Clark got a waiver as he dressed for all of the games in the first half of the season. I remember Speellman got a waiver when a UML goon ruined his promising career about 35-40% into the season. He was never the same after that brutal hit from behind that shattered his arm. If anyone knows that Clark got a waiver, please post. He is already 23 years old and will be 25 by the time his fifth season would start.

And, Vela! Ok, don't play the over/under game with me and Chuck, but you will be missing out at the over/under awards ceremony at the end of the season. :p

D'oh!! Of course Vela!! See why I'm a lousy game player, haha...As per Adam Clark and a waiver I do think he did this but don't quote me on that...And since the Big Ten dropped the age issue the sky's the limit...Remember Mike R is coming aboard year after this; where does that place Adam/DT? Seniors? Or will DT be gone already (he lost a year or do I have that wrong argh). It's nice to be chatting players btw although I'm not rushing the summer...

I believe that DT has this year and next, as his first spring semester in 2015 counted for his first full year. Also, ironically, I think that you correct that AC has two more years after this year with his waiver for playing in only two games last season because of injury. So, next year will be very strange with three first string goalies on the team, unless something shakes out after this year (maybe either DT or AC will have an amazing year and go pro?).

He dressed for all of the games before his surgery over winter break. I will ask him if he has a waiver for last year. He does not turn 26 until the spring semester of what would be his 5th year so it might work out.

Bah. I knew I was going to screw that up. Thanks for the clarification.

My clear recollection is Clark received a waiver (medical "redshirt" if you will), and will get a do-over for his second year of eligibility this season. Tirone is definitely entering his 3rd season. I remember this specifically, because when Clark first matriculated, Tirone was not supposed to arrive until the following season, and therefore was a full season behind Clark. He "pulled even" when he arrived at UNH in midseason year before last (2014/2015) due to the late preseason situation with CDS unexpected early departure from the program.

When Clark got his medical redshirt last season, that completed the unlikely goalie scenario where Tirone - who was supposed to be a full year behind Clark - will now likely end his UNH career a full year ahead of him instead.

And meaning Clark (who started his UNH career as the first string goalie for the first half of his frosh season) will almost certainly end it season after next as the 3rd string "emergency" goalie behind Tirone and Robinson.

Finally ... it' disappointing that (at least per 1932) some of the UNH players apparently hold some of us fans in such low regard. If any of those guys think last season was deserving of ANY level of praise, then I think the problem in the program is a little deeper than even the most cynical of us may have already believed. And it frankly only reinforces the opinions of guys like 'Watcher who have basically called for a "clean sweep" approach to the top of the program - not the "halfway" approach that's currently entering Year 2 of a 3 yr. transition.

No more excuses. No more whining. Like bakck20 said a few posts ago ... just show me. Show us. Show us all. We've been here for a lot longer than any of the players, and yes, we've seen what it looks like when it's working correctly. But if last season is going to be the template for what the next few seasons are going to look like ... then it's a shame these players will never really get to experience what it feels like to have a partisan UNH crowd filling the house and 100% behind you. But even if the current state of the program isn't all your fault, you're still gonna have to earn it. Otherwise, hey, no big deal, enjoy the ECHL, your loss - we'll wait for the next great UNH teams.

We were expecting this (3 first string goalies) this season..some here predicted Clarky would look elsewhere. I'm very curious how this season shakes out GK wise...just be healthy and stop loads of shots please and thank you...along with having a decent D corp in front?!? Reviewing probable D pairs:

Cleland-Marks (Maller if healthy?)
Wyse-Dawson
Boyd-Chanter
Nonis-

Am I missing someone? And personally I'm excited about the incoming class; if I WERE playing 'over/under' I'd put the 'Cats at more wins (15) to be honest. :)

Until UNH has enough puck moving defensemen to cover the first two pairings, I think that's the basic problem.

The good news is it might only take two such players (one per pairing). But right now we have (maybe?) one.

If they can develop things favorably in this area, I think 15 wins are within reach - especially with the schedule.

Just my opinion. :)

Would def agree this component (able skating D ) would be a necessary component we sorely need ...which guys like TvR and Brett Pesh provided. Am hoping Wyse/Marks/Dawson (and a healthy Dylan M) can grow into! Remaining hopeful!
