Oh, and since the subject did come up ... I want to issue a terse "no comment" to long-standing rumors that scenes from Oliver Barrett III's dad's shack in Love Story were actually filmed on the WIS Estate in Effingwoods. :D

Yeah....some "shack!" :D Imagine plowing the snow from THAT driveway? What was it....a mile long?

Re: UNH Wildcats 2016-17 Vol II -- We Do Have a Hockey Season Here!?!

So, just by coincidence I watched the old movie "Love Story" (starring Ali MacGraw, Ryan O'Neal and Joe Bertagna) from 1970 tonight. I'm sure you'd remember this, Chuck. There were a couple of sequences where Harvard played hockey games (first against Dartmouth and then Cornell). Especially since we have just been discussing it today, I paid particular attention to the equipment. It was hysterical. The goalies' catching gloves were smaller than a first baseman's mitt. And their "pads" barely extended beyond the outside of their shins (not to mention that they stopped barely above the knee). There was a lot of going down on their sides and "stacking the pads" (which didn't do a lot of good because they didn't cover much area). And it would probably remind you of the old Snively days...the spectators all wore heavy coats...it looked as though the hockey sequences were filmed in "chilly" Watson Rink. :)

Fixed your post:D

Great movie. Dragged it out a couple of years ago. Urban legend has it that Mike Ontkean skated in the hockey scenes. I have never been able to verify that.

Former Harvard coach Billy Cleary did the skating scenes.

FWIW a certain whistle-happy current HE head coach was in the prime of his D-1 playing career at around the time this movie was filmed. Not to mention his non-Varsity Frosh season would have overlapped with Ontkean's senior season at Durham. Gotta think both guys would have had plenty of spare time on their hands for some "extra" work out on the ice. So feel free to add that potentially intriguing speculation to your urban legend, e.cat. :)

Cool for him!

On another note, I never quite figured out the "love means never having to say your sorry" bit until a couple of years ago. Now I never say I'm sorry to my wife anymore. Haha!

LOL!

That's just fake news!;)

Re: UNH Wildcats 2016-17 Vol II -- We Do Have a Hockey Season Here!?!

Question, Is the Hickey kid out for this weekend? He took a pretty nasty boarding check(no call!) in the Harvard game and had to be helped off the ice?

Apparently, yes. Out for the weekend and "week to week" going forward...

Good luck with that! :D

Perhaps as a team, maybe because of their youth. Stating the obvious, their individual talent is off the charts. If they get it together as a team before half the players leave for the pros... look out!

Spoke to friend of mine who is a long, long time BU season ticket holder. He told me that, while individually talented., the BU forwards have difficulty making sustained offense. He cited a game last week vs. Lowell where they scored short handed on a 3-on-5 but later on had a 5-on-3 for almost a full two minutes and didn't generate a shot. They are not playing well but, of course, neither is UNH, so talent will no doubt win out especially in goal. Btw, my friend also told me that Kiefer Bellows, an Islander first rounder, has six DNPs-coaches decision this season.
