It's funny, I didn't see your post until after I'd posted. Looks like the SMT mentality is about to re-awaken!! ;)

Jason Kalinowski, we hardly knew ye ...

15 minutes is a long time to mull over a 3-line post, Chuck. :)

Chuck, when I read this over on Todd's thread you were the first person that I thought of:

"UNH, however, came into the weekend with the ability to work into a H2H tie with either or both of BC and UML, and could pass on TB2 by having more league wins. The HE RS crown is still within reach."

Well, I guess that ship officially sailed last night. Unofficially, that ship left port at least a month ago.

Not when you're in the middle of trying to do your taxes, and planning out tonight's line-ups it isn't. :)

Re: UNH Wildcats 2015-2016 (Part Two) - Managing Decreasing Expectations

An early goal from Poturalski (who else) gives UNH a 1-0 lead after one. Poturalski scored 30 seconds into the game but, from that point on, they really didn't need the Lowell zone to play the rest of the period. Lowell leads in face-off wins 11-2 and hasn't lost much possession between face-offs either...

Re: UNH Wildcats 2015-2016 (Part Two) - Managing Decreasing Expectations

'Cats get the first one less than 30 seconds lead 1-0 after 1..TyK gets the assist and is 2 away from 💯. Pretty much all UML

Re: UNH Wildcats 2015-2016 (Part Two) - Managing Decreasing Expectations

You can be good, or you can be lucky, and tonight, Tirone has been both, so far.

Re: UNH Wildcats 2015-2016 (Part Two) - Managing Decreasing Expectations

Poturalski stoned on a penalty shot, but Eiserman answers with his first of the year on a great passing play by McNicholas and Hill...

Re: UNH Wildcats 2015-2016 (Part Two) - Managing Decreasing Expectations

And, UNH is making the most of their chances; 2-0!

Re: UNH Wildcats 2015-2016 (Part Two) - Managing Decreasing Expectations

OMG DT gets clocked!!

Can see how it might look like that in the arena, but really (as online replay shows) he just got his leg tied up with the Lowell forward and tripped...

Re: UNH Wildcats 2015-2016 (Part Two) - Managing Decreasing Expectations

Hope UNH can steal this one with a good third period - they're ahead, but not playing very well at all. Lowell has dominated possession, but they're consistently fanning on shots on goal or missing the net entirely. Defensively, UNH just can't get out of their zone OR take the puck away from Lowell. When they do get the puck they're turning it over or making low percentage clears.

Dawson brings some offense and puck movement (at least relative to his peers), but he needs a lot of work in his own end. He was beaten wide by UML forwards four times in the second period alone. Cleland hasn't been much better tonight.

McNicholas looks great on the power play and made a great pass to initiate the second goal. I think we'll look back on his career and wonder why he languished in the seats and on the lower lines in his first two seasons. Its a shame.

Eiserman has such great speed for his size and plays with reckless abandoned - put him with Poturalski and Kelleher next year and that line doesn't miss a beat. I like Nazarian more every time I see him. I think (hope) Vela, Nazarian, McNicholas, Blackburn and Fregona will give UNH better secondary scoring in 2016-17...

Nice unassisted goal by Nazarian, but matched by UML within seconds.

Re: UNH Wildcats 2015-2016 (Part Two) - Managing Decreasing Expectations

Nazarian makes it 3-0, but Lowell answers 22 seconds later. Back to back goals against and opponents' goals immediately following UNH goals has been a killer all season long...

Re: UNH Wildcats 2015-2016 (Part Two) - Managing Decreasing Expectations

Quast just took a hard one in the lower leg for a block on what might have been a goal.

Re: UNH Wildcats 2015-2016 (Part Two) - Managing Decreasing Expectations

Dan, I really think that UNH has played much better in the second and third; that UML goal was a cheapie.

The second period was better than the first, but not great. The third period was definitely a much better effort, in terms of possession, clearing pucks and avoiding turnovers. We've talked a lot about the defensive deficiencies on this team, but the one thing they are doing tonight is really battling. They've blocked almost 30 shots (27 at last count) and won nearly all of the battles in front of the net for rebounds. That's how they have to play every night, if they want to sneak up to sixth-place...

Regardless of how they played tonight, if you told me they'd drop a one-goal game at BC and steal a win in Lowell I would have taken it in a heart beat. Hopefully, they can carry some confidence into next weekend. The Vermont series will make or break their hopes for first-round home ice. They need to split in the worst case scenario and I'm hoping they can take at least three points...

Lowell took the Poturalski harassment to another level tonight, taking shot after shot at him in the face-off circle. There was one instance where Poturalski skated to the dot and then took three consecutive crosschecks from a River Hawk before the Lowell player was thrown out of the circle. Another sequence saw a UML center cross check Poturalski and get thrown out of the face-off, only for the winger to come to the dot and immediately knock Poturalski to the ice...
