Re: UNH Wildcats 2015-2016 (Part Two) - Managing Decreasing Expectations

Tonight was great on so many levels but here were my highlights:

DT gets a well deserved shut out....
7 different players scored including McNick who scored his first NCAA goal...
Watching our top line sit out the last 3 or so minutes on the boards watching other players get some play time AND being successful...
We never let up or let Maine get back in the game....
The General TyK gets an assist moving him even closer to the Century Club...
Frankie Cefalu showed some hustle and poise in the power play.
I could go on...oh yeah seeing Wildcatdc and Em...☺️😉

Ok I know what yer thinking game doesn't matter much but after being frustrated up there last night and just completely dominating tonight was beyond worth it. Onto the other 'Cats!

Won't repeat my comments from the Maine thread but amen, sister!!

Re: UNH Wildcats 2015-2016 (Part Two) - Managing Decreasing Expectations

I know some of you guys are going to worry about Poturalski and Kelleher having relatively quiet evenings tonight ... but it's exciting to see a lot of the other guys starting to hit the scoresheet with greater regularity. Vela, Nazarian, Salvaggio, McNicholas, and even two of the three guys on the reconstituted Maginot Line (*Gaudreault/*Smith/now Hill for MacDonald) tallying, as well as the red-hot Correale. Promising stuff indeed.

Shutout for Tirone, solid performance by the defense (only 21 shots - most of limited quality?) ... and two straight wins coming out of the break to consolidate the momentum the team took into the break from early December.

Maybe the Riverstone isn't a big deal ... but technically it *does* allow UNH to be "Champions of December" again in something, which is better than a sharp stick in the eye in my book. :)

More hay to be made in some of the upcoming games, so let's hope they're starting a second half roll like the one from the end of last season, only a little earlier. Happy New Year 2:)16 everyone!!

Re: UNH Wildcats 2015-2016 (Part Two) - Managing Decreasing Expectations

Speaking of the 'red hot' Dan Correale, he currently leads the nation in PPG's with 8 (4 in the Maine series alone as was pointed out on the Maine thread) Cool for him!

BTW this was brought to my attention from Mike L aka C-H-C's twitter feed tonight. Like Chuck pointed out it is gratifying to see the other guys putting the puck in the net. Also it was pointed out that Eiserman was injured last night (we saw him have some issues skating off the ice) don't know what's up with that. We'll see what comes about the next few games (and even this weekend in VT). Happy New Year indeed everyone!

Here's some highlights:

Re: UNH Wildcats 2015-2016 (Part Two) - Managing Decreasing Expectations

I think that my favorite part of the game tonight was the way UNH responded to Maine getting chippy. It was pretty obvious that UNH was just taking it easy in the 3rd period, sitting the 1st line for most of the period and almost avoiding taking shots on some of the late powerplays. However after Renouf took a shot at Tirone late in the 3rd instead of losing their cool and getting out of hand, they coolly went down for a powerplay and potted another one. There's no better way to respond to someone trying to get you to do something stupid than to do the exact opposite and shut them up. I loved it!

Maine team is definitely worse off than the 'Cats. Those struggles make the rivalry not seem to mean as much as the old days. But man it sure does still feel good to watch UNH crush the black bears!

Re: UNH Wildcats 2015-2016 (Part Two) - Managing Decreasing Expectations

Our SMTs still 55th in PMs, and along with Vlae and Cornell, without a major.

Re: UNH Wildcats 2015-2016 (Part Two) - Managing Decreasing Expectations

Every positive thought about this game has to run through the Maine sucks (not M-A-I-N-E... Maaaiiinnne Sucks!) filter. On the "Stillwater" thread they bemoan the lack of talent. It is pretty obvious. One wonders if you swap Umile for Bryant in the Bum Phillips "take his and beat yours, and then he can turn around and take yours and beat his" quote what would happen. One thing for sure is the goon squad would be reeled in.

Maine missed the net many times, but DT made some very good and 2 - 3 spectacular saves. One was of the reach back behind him type, many looked easy, the result of solid positioning. Vela played like someone, maybe a mentor or teammate had a Christmas chat with him. Maybe he had a chat with himself, who knows, but he was large and in charge. Quast/Dawson: +4.

There were maybe 4000 people in attendance, but somehow it was a good atmosphere. Kudos to the previously mentioned student section. "If you can't get into college, 'cause you haven;t got the knowledge... ". For the first time I've witnessed, the game was delayed a few seconds so a fan scoreboard contest could be completed. Errrggghhh...

This one's for you Chuck: there are 2 signs on the ice reading "Still The Kings of NH Hockey".

You know I was wondering how the crowd at the Verizon would respond; and the venue is laid out differently than up in Portland (Cross). Agree; the atmosphere was good. We rallied the troops where we were sitting and eventually they joined the cheers from the student section (kudos to them too..). That one save of DT's was awesome; so wanted him to get the shutout. I have a pic of the nations top line threesome leaning on the boards watching the others out there; was so cool to see that we do indeed have a future (even against the poor effort put up by Maine). There is one thing constant that UNH no matter how we do, have loyalty in their fan base.

Marcus Vela...he played well the night before and last night, good observation on him! Speaking of the goon squad we were sitting right at the ice and witnessed the night before DT's head getting jammed into the ice AFTER a player skated into him and it happened last night too. What the????? I know it get rough around the goal but honestly don't think I've seen that two nights in a row. Renouf is a decent player and I don't know him from Adam but honestly?!?

Onto Vermont!!! I look forward to catching up with Snively65; hubby is going he finds what you do most interesting!!

File that down under, "say it enough times, and eventually it becomes the truth". Blue Skies, you out there, bro?

Re: UNH Wildcats 2015-2016 (Part Two) - Managing Decreasing Expectations

Richard Boyd was out of the lineup for both games. Anyone know his status? Injured? Ill? Or is this rumored "academic issue" that was being postulated earlier in this thread??

If you're referring to my recent remark, Scott - no, he wasn't the one I was referring to.

The one I was referring to hasn't even suited up (so far) this season. No idea about Boyd ...

Re: UNH Wildcats 2015-2016 (Part Two) - Managing Decreasing Expectations

One wonders if you swap Umile for Bryant in the Bum Phillips "take his and beat yours, and then he can turn around and take yours and beat his" quote what would happen.

An excellent, topical reference, but if you're gonna quote the late, lamented Bum, ya gots to get it right for the full Southern flavor, to wit: "take his'n and beat your'n, and then he can turn around and take your'n and beat his'n" :-) [Base Commander] Jack Ripper may have been the most famous persona obsessed with 'precious bodily fluids,' but Bum could turn a phrase with the best of 'em ...

Re: UNH Wildcats 2015-2016 (Part Two) - Managing Decreasing Expectations

Quick, without looking it up, who can name the sole Wildcat playing in today's alumni game at Gillette?

Re: UNH Wildcats 2015-2016 (Part Two) - Managing Decreasing Expectations

I'll guess Brickley since he's the current color commentator - but other UNH/B's I can think of off the top of my head include Peter Douris, Jay Miller, Bobby Gould, Jeff Lazaro, Erik Niklaus and Chris Winnes. Rod Langway would be the Montreal choice and the only former UNH/Hab I can think of...

Re: UNH Wildcats 2015-2016 (Part Two) - Managing Decreasing Expectations

Jay Miller....over 1700 career PIMs
