Re: UNH Wildcats 2015-2016 (Part One) - Return of the "Champions of December"??

Just so we're clear, I'm not questioning anyone's effort (and you did not say I was :)), least of all the seniors.

Carry on.

Hey I fully understood what you meant...and agree that ability obviously counts for alot, uh, esp. in the win/loss category. That's why I get frustrated when I watch players who have the talent, but aren't doing the work; saw it in my coaching years, and in many other sporting instances as I'm sure, everyone here has. Onward!

Tom Glavine

I know Glavine was a great high school hockey player but he never played hockey in the pros right?

Speaking of two sport athletes at UNH in addition to Langway, we would be remiss not to mention NH native Carlton Fisk who went to UNH on a bball scholarship and played both baseball and bball. I played high school bball against his brother Conrad who was also a great baseball player.

Tom Glavine

Glavine was committed to play hockey at Lowell but decided on baseball. He was drafted by the Los Angeles Kings in the fourth round of the 1984 NHL Draft.

Given the choice of playing hockey or baseball, Glavine chose the latter after being a second-round selection of the Braves in the 1984 MLB Draft. Prior to making that choice Glavine was committed to the University of Massachusetts-Lowell and would surely have starred for the Riverhawks if he had chosen that route.

I always thought Chris Drury and his Little League World Series win, Hobey Baker, and NHL career was amazing .....

It was. Not too many of those LLWS kids ever surface again when they mature. Danny Almonte, anyone?

hockeydb says he played on game in the ECHL. Not sure about that.

Pretty sure Mike Waghorne was another two sport athlete at UNH, playing football and hockey in the early 80's

So, Chuck, given your antipathy toward Draft Kings and Fantasy Sports in general, with which I agree by the way, will we not see your over/under predictions for our Cats this season?

I'm not sure I consider those both one and the same? Let me check with the BC folks first - they'll know for sure. :D

Actually another one, in the mid-80's, Brian Byrnes who played lacrosse (when UNH still had a men's team) as well as hockey.

Dave Lumley was as fierce on the UNH Lacrosse team as he was on the UNH Hockey team. Went on to play on a line with the Great One in Edmonton ..... and has his name on the Stanley Cup (twice).

Cool stats about some of our players and team early in the season:

Not travelling to UMass or Union this year; hoping to catch it online. See the 'Cats at MC Halloween. Hoping for fast starts and sustained effort; will be excellent competition. Go 'Cats!

Also this "cool" that Matt Dawson gets part of the interview:

No disrespect to HR, but I'm not sure "cool" is the word I'd be attaching to the UNH ... uh, *piece* she's linked.

The phrase We have to protect our phoney baloney jobs here, gentlemen!! does spring to mind, though.

The most insightful "stat" in the bunch - at least for me - was the one entitled "Closing in on 100". When is the last time UNH could say they started the season with one (1) player with 100 or more games played in his career? And that the captain AND an alternate captain were amongst those who hadn't reached that level yet?

And did anyone else (besides me) NOT know that Gaudreault's nickname is apparently "Goose"?????

Let's hope the boys bounce back soon, or else "C" is gonna stand for something other than Captain Collin ...

I did find it interesting that Gaudreault was about to become the 72nd member of the "Century Club." There are some very impressive names on that list:

But I like that word...;) Anytime you have something that stands out, albeit early, is a good thing, and remember 'no good thing ever dies'. Maybe it's time to let that Captain thing go...why is it still an issue? Leadership stands for many things; not always reflected on the stat sheet?

Maybe this is more newsworthy: Brett Pesce will be with the 'Canes in LA for Friday nights game! Psyched (and, cool haha) that I have NHL gamecenter...will be worth the watch...

Re: UNH Wildcats 2015-2016 (Part One) - Return of the "Champions of December"??

Prior to one of the games this weekend in Durham a moment of silence was observed at the Whit. I have waited a while to put something on this thread.

The moment was for Barry Edgar. I am not sure how many still remember Edgar. I do. He was one of my favorite players in my almost 50 years of being a UNH hockey fan. He was a talented hockey player. He had one of the best walrus mustaches I have seen. I gradually came to forgive him for the faceoff loss against Wisconsin in the last stages of the NCAA tournament that went directly into the net.

It was wonderful to learn that after his stellar time at UNH he went home to Ontario and was the Captain of his hometown team .... that went on to win the Allan Cup in 1979 and 1981. The Allan Cup is awarded to one of the top teams in Canadian Amateur Hockey.

He was 60 years old.

There certainly are. Blows me away when I look at the points those guys put up. Times of course have changed for the game...still amazing. Seems to me it's quite an accomplishment to make this list. I remember reading when Kevin G was about to overtake Coach U in scoring and he (coach) reminded Kevin that he 'did it in 3' (years) ;) You guys that are the veterans on this board have seen some amazing stuff...hope I can hang around long enough to do the same!

ps we were picked to split the weekend. I can live with that. oh and I like the word amazing, too. :p

I believe there is some confusion about the "century club". Max will need a very productive season to make it on the list that all three of our coaches are on.
