Re: UNH Wildcats 2015-2016 (Part One) - Return of the "Champions of December"??

Hey gang

What is the Whitt's policy on visiting bands? Our band was allowed in, but without their instruments. Huh?

I've never seen a visiting team bring their band to the Whitt before. Anyone recall differently?

Sometimes I've wondered if our own band has been allowed into the building without instruments, to be honest.

Care to rephrase that thought?

Dodged a bullet, I suppose. That's two late home losses, and grumbling already about some seniors ... not good.

1) Good point with Clark probably transfering. However, I would think he would want to transfer to the best possible situation for him and therefore would be motivated to play well. I still think UNH would have won both games with Clark in net .... or at minimum split the weekend.

It's always the case where the backup goalie on a losing team is the best player on the team, no?

Funny ... last year, DT and the team got on such a roll, and the whole "where is Clark?" thing kind of got swept under the rug. Now it's back, and potentially with a vengeance. Didn't see either game this weekend, so I can't really comment too specifically, but Coach Umile had to be expecting no worse than a split of these two games. Hardly "Champions of December" stuff ... and now it's off onto the road to try to right the ship. Still way too early to panic, but this ain't gonna the ol' PWR when March rolls around ( ... this is a recording) ... :(

I'm sure that we've had visiting bands at the Whitt in the past....so now Marty does not want visiting bands??? We saw the Clarkson students with their "Clarkson Band" attire and we wondered why they didn't have their instruments

Distinctly remember a team having a band last season for the life of me can't remember who it was. At least the Clarkson band had fun up in the stands. A disappointing weekend to be sure. Talked to a few players at a function after the game. Met Matt Dawson who is very excited to be here. Coach was disappointed with the weekend. Think that's the word of the night! Well here comes the road trip....

Maybe somebody finally woke up in Athletics. Outside of playoffs it is up to the school. UNH has allowed opposing bands before even as we have been denied.

That said, I suspect it may be due to the fact that UNH didn't have their Pep Band tonight. If I'm not mistaken it was an Alumni Band tonight (accounting for their tiny number) as the Marching Band was at the Dover Band Show (a local high school). They probably didn't want to give Clarkson their band when we didn't have our real band.

The only times I ever recall seeing more than one band in any building (at least in recent years, and I'm counting the entire Whitt era as "recent") is when it's a tournament and/or neutral site game. Not saying that's absolutely the case, but I suspect it would at least theoretically undercut the "home ice advantage". Or tempt home fans to "show some *love*" to the opposing band, or whatever.

Heck, I'd pay serious money to see the BU band cruise into Conte and play their trademark "F 'em up, BC sucks" bit a few times (which you know they play regardless of who is BU's opponent that given evening). The resulting carnage up and down Comm Ave. would probably hit the national news ... which is why I just don't think traveling bands in opposition barns is necessarily a good idea.

Not to mention the added travel costs, etc. Begs the question as to why Clarkson didn't check on this in advance? Maybe this is more prevalent in the ECAC, or just the Upstate NY schools?

I'm not going to crucify BS35+3 over this. Still plenty of other issues to work with there. :D

Well, UNH still has a (poor) high school quality field, so the marching band should feel right at home.

If they can't take care of business at home, don't expect them to take care of business on the road. If they can't fix the sloppiness with their puck movement and the stupid penalties that they have been taking (especially tonight) then don't expect nothing less than a chit-show over the next three weeks. Sorry...but the "fast start" that they were hoping for before the season started is pretty much faded away at this point especially when your team is forced to play catch-up in the first three games of the season.

This is turning into 2014-15 all over again. And yes, it's time sit Tirone and let Clark play a few games.

Every one of those penalties was BS.

If you don't believe me, just ask the student section.

Can't understand why Richie Boyd isn't out there...? Chanter? Surely AIC isnt a decent comparison to what we faced this weekend but we haven't / didn't even come close to playing like we did in that game. Just can't quite understand...I know we are better than this! Sigh...

Lost the (insert your own advanced metric here). Lost the game. We're on to 4-0 UMASS! Yikes!

EZAC clearly in the rear view mirror now if it wasn't already after Yale and Union winning NC's!

2) Maybe the Associate Coaches can convince the Head Coach go play the 1st and 2nd year players instead of at least a couple of the current seniors.

Only six of UNH's 21 players are negative +/- for the season - four of which are forwards...

Fr, Marcus Vela -1
Sr, Maxim Gaudreault -2
Sr, Colin MacDonald -2
Sr, Kyle Smith -3

And yet, McNicholas sits in the seats because he's not sound enough defensively...

A few more shaky goals on Tirone, but the highlights make the D look like the biggest culprits tonight. I'm sure Umile will see it the same way and run Tirone back out there next game. He clearly doesn't believe in Clark. I really expected and hoped Clark would play tonight and agree he makes a big difference this weekend had he played. At this point, if Umile didn't see fit to give him a SINGLE start down the stretch last year, wouldn't even split the exhibition game 50/50 and didn't play him tonight after three straight sub-par performances from Tirone, why should we expect to see him after a fourth shaky outing from DT...??

Hope I'm wrong.

The ECAC actually has a rule that barring violation of rink rules (which vary - swearing, yelling KNIGHTS during the anthem, other decorum issues) opposing bands must be allowed to play if they wish. Advance notice is sometimes requested or "required" depending on which arena manager you talk to, but ultimately they do have to allow it. The rumor is that the rule was instituted way back in the 60s and 70s when SLU routinely prohibited the Clarkson band from playing at Appleton. It became a rules issue at some point, and the league mandated it. It's my understanding that the band did give UNH advance notice of their intent, because when I met with the CU band director at Merrimack on Friday, they had already been told they wouldn't be allowed to play. I don't know when that was communicated, but either way it's crap. Bands of any size, from either team, always add to the atmosphere and unique experience that is college hockey, and limiting that for any reason other than blatant rule-breaking or obscenity is ridiculous.

Many of the ECAC bands travel to opposing rinks thanks to this rule - RPI, Cornell, Brown, and I think Quinnipiac's bands have come to Clarkson. I know Clarkson's band has been to every single ECAC rink at some point including Vermont before they went to HE, and for a few years we went to every league road game. What a crazy schedule that was, I do not envy college hockey players after doing that, and my second semester grades did not like it either. Colgate and Cornell's bands go to each other's rinks every year, RPI heads over to Union, I assume Q-Pac and Yale do the same. It's just a way better environment when you let everyone do their thing. Seriously, if you have a good band (and especially if you have two) just tell the DJ not to bother.

I would not read too much into two early season one-goal losses. I think we were picked for 6th in the coaches poll, and 8th in the media poll. These losses mean nothing, other than as to the hunt for 600. UNH should be able to get near .500 this season and next, which would get Coach Umile the magical 600th win before he hits age 70. PWR is not going to be an issue, as we will only make the NCAAs by winning the HE tourney.
This is what the next three years will be like. There is little immediate help coming in those three years, as the recruiting is completed for Umile's tenure, save for one additional D next year to make up for the loss of our impact recruits (Masonius, Ryczek). With the market picked clean, it is unlikely that the new recruit would impact the remaining Umile era.

So, being optimistic, this is all about a massive rebuild starting in 2019. Hard to tell how our "organized transition" is working, as everything is quiet (other than the decommitments of the quality recruits). There have been 86 Hockey East recruits since our last pickup. (Good to see PC, after getting quality recruits, is starting the Borek volume model, picking up 7 kids since June, including from his "vaunted" Mid-Atlantic pipeline.) The positive side of me is pleased UNH is not just brining in a lot of recruits for 2019 and beyond. Whether that means they will get "quality" by being selective waits to be seen. I anxiously await the first announcement of the Head-Coach-In-Waiting era. The positive side of me also is pleased that Marty Scarano agreed to a plan that made the men's program's transition work better than his transition for the womens team.

This all makes sense to me .... especially when a curmudgeon friend said a few years ago .... "You know this whole coaching thing reminds me of an "Imperial Presidency" ....

I started swearing to my god
And on my mother's grave
That I would love you to the end of time
I swore I would love you to the end of time

So now I'm praying for the end of time
To hurry up and arrive

'Cause if I gotta spend another minute with you
I don't think that I can really survive
I'll never break my promise or forget my vow
But God only knows what I can do right now
I'm praying for the end of time
It's all I can do (ooh, ooh)
I'm praying for the end of time
So I can end my time with you

[Boy:]
It was long ago and it was far away,
And it was so much better than it is today

What did you think of the game e.cat?

Give credit to Clarkson, they bounced back after a tough loss to Mc the night before. Having said that UNH looks very sloppy. Agree with others Tirone not playing well right now and I thought Clark should have gotten the start last night. The team D in front of Tirone not helping him much though. Playing from behind all the time is not a winning formula. Going out on the road might actually help this team right now. Hope so anyway!

"Although the goal wasn’t Tirone’s fault, there was a bit of concern that he wasn’t feeling at his best. He seemed to recover and play well after that point, but there was certainly some concern."

If only the team would work as hard as the Tirone propaganda machine...
