Re: UNH Wildcats 2014 Post-Season Thread: "Maybe Dick" Hunts the Great White Whale

Disclosure: I'm not an expert on this crap. I think a certain (low) number of games played constitutes a year. I believe you can play a bit, get injured, and still redshirt the year. I'd have to believe that playing the second semester equals a year of eligibility. But remember: I'm not an expert on this crap.

Without going into all of the redshirt rules, I can confirm that playing the second semester counts as a full year of eligibility. PC did the same thing with Alex Beaudry a few years back.

Re: UNH Wildcats 2014 Post-Season Thread: "Maybe Dick" Hunts the Great White Whale

Interesting developments for sure on the goalie front. Which leads me to thinking there are any number of questions out there - more so than I can recall in any recent season - regarding which players will take on key roles, and what the outlook for the season might be.

Keeping that in mind ... if anyone wants to check in with their thoughts on the following issues and questions:

* In goal ... will Coach Umile split time initially between Clark and Regan? Or will one of those two get most of the games (based on prior board feedback, the consensus seems to be that Clark will be the lead dog)? If the Clark/Regan combo turns out OK, will Coach Umile leave Tirone in juniors until next season? If the early season combo falters ... is Tirone good enough to take the top job?

* Goalie over/under: The assailant playing 0.5 games in goal for UNH this season. I'll take the under.

* On defense ... it would seem highly likely that Pesce, Cleland and Maller will be three of the four defensemen who will feature in the top two pairings this season. If that proves to be true ... who will emerge as the 4th player in the top two pairings by midseason? Or will Coach Umile spread his top three d-men with one apiece leading the 3 pairings? If so - who plays with Pesce, who plays on Maller's pairing and who plays on Cleland's pairing??

* Defense over/under: UNH will allow 3.00 goals per game this season. I'll take the over (and hope I'm wrong).

* Up front ... who skates on the top line, and who are the centers on all four lines? Where will the goals come from? Which of the frosh will break out early in the season, which will gradually emerge as the season plays out, and which won't get off the start line? Which of the low profile returning players will enjoy their own "breakout" season and start raining goals after a slow start to their UNH careers?

* Offense over/under: UNH will score 3.00 goals per game this season. I'll take the under. If they can get the over, it at least should be a fun and exciting season.

Team outlook: I've said this before, and I'll say it again. UNH will finish in 7th place this coming regular season. I see a slow finish, but hopefully with a tough NC early schedule out of the way by 2015, the team will finish stronger, and could be an interesting outlook for the postseason. I don't see a return trip to the Garden OR to the NCAA's, but hopefully we'll be back to both in 2016. :)

Team over/under: 5.5 wins before Winter break (ties don't count as even a half-win). I'll take the under.
Team over/under: 6.5th :D place in the HE regular season, and 0.5 postseason wins.

Regan is a walk-on, third-string goalie - much in the same mold of past third-string goalies (Manke, Scott). I'm very surprised to read so many comments that suggest that/wonder if he'll see meaningful playing time or push Clark at all...

It would shock me if he sees the ice much, if any, during the first half of the season. If DeSmith is out, which seems likely, Clark is your first-half goalie. With Tirone arriving second semester, I'd imagine there is either 1) a reason he cannot enroll first semester (academic requirements he needs to meet) or 2) a slight chance that DeSmith may be cleared and back on the roster, allowing Tirone to remain in juniors all year (but be close by and prepared, if needed).

Regan was recruited as/and is a depth goalie. My guess is that the rush to bring Tirone in ahead of schedule further illustrates that Regan is viewed as a depth goalie and the coaches want more security in the crease (Tirone/Clark rotation or one backing-up the other). If Regan was a viable option they'd leave Tirone in the USHL and call up a traditional third goal from the club team...

Ok, I will go with the under on the goalie, over on the goals given up, over on goals scored, over on wins through Dec 13th, under on place (maybe we will be 6th), and under on post-season wins.

Yes Tirone is good enough to take the #1 goalie spot. I have watched for a year here in Cedar Rapids and he has one of the if not the quickest gloves I have seen at the junior level. He is a bit undersized by moves so well. He can go post to post with the best of them.

Per Jeff Cox, Danny Tirone will play for the Jr Bruins of the USPHL before enrolling at UNH 2nd semster

Re: UNH Wildcats 2014 Post-Season Thread: "Maybe Dick" Hunts the Great White Whale

So does this mean that his last season he can only play the first half of the season? How does that whole thing work?

No, it means he essentially has 3.5 years of eligibility...unless he is brought in as an emergency goaltender and doesn't play barring an injury to one of the other two, in which case he could still have 4 full years of eligibility.

My guess is which route is taken would depend heavily on what happens in the first semester. If Tirone can step in as the #1, he'll play right away. If Clark is handling the position well, they may try to wait on Tirone.

More than likely, I think we'll end up seeing him play in some capacity this season.

The Junior Bruins Premiere team are playing at the New England Sports Center in Marlborough, MA today, tomorrow and Sunday:

Road trip!! Be awesome to see both he and Charlie play...thought BvR played for the NJ Hitmen? Where is he this season? Another thought how wild it must be for our current alums who are at their prospective pro camps this week playing with the "big boys"...what a rush!

Brendan van Riemsdyk is playing for the Islanders Hockey Club Premiere team this season. They are also playing this weekend in Marlborough.

Worst case scenario is that Clark is playing well early, UNH decides wait on Tirone per the original plan, and then something happens to Clark in the second half of the season. Given that the outlook for a UNH postseason run of any significance would seem to be fairly unlikely, then it's a non-issue and Regan gets more PT than he ever imagined possible, while some lucky sub-Varsity goalie gets to tell his grandkids someday how once upon a time. he suited up for the *mighty* UNH Wildcats. :D :)

By wait I just meant to play him. He will be on the roster no matter what in case of an injury, but if Clark is going well theres be no reason to throw Tirone out there and burn a year of eligibility and put two scholarship goalies in the same class.

Understood. But other than having a kid in a little early to practice/train with his future teammates, what advantage is served to have him just sit on the bench? Does UNH even have a dedicated goalie coach anymore? And even if Clark can't play for some reason (injury, suspension or whatever) ... does throwing Tirone in during the midst of what many of us believe to be a rebuilding (NOT reloading) season warrant potentially "burning" a year of his eligibility?

Captain Obvious moment - the decision doesn't need to be made until December anyway. But I'm leaning towards just letting Tirone play another year in juniors, and not throwing a wrench into the "staggered" years approach as initially planned. At least that was the plan before some idiot senior whose name will not be mentioned here decided to play full contact MMA with his girlfriend.

On a related note.... One of my coworkers in MSP was a "sub-varsity" goalie at Minnesota. The one and only time he suited up (and played) for the Gophers? That's right, vs. our "mighty" wildcats. He's now highly sought after in our annual broomball tourney.

So you leave Tirone in juniors...and what happens if Clark gets injured?

Where I come from you put your best team on the ice, no matter what. Doesn't matter if you can win the National Championship or if you have the talent to try to scrape together one win. I'd be disappointed if UNH DIDN'T make a move to try and shore up the goaltending position.

I mean really...we are going to save Tirone because we are banking on him winning us a championship in what would have been his 4th year? How has that worked out in the past? No, you put your best team on the ice now, and if that means he has to play, play him. If it means you can keep him on the bench because Clark is healthy and playing well and let him get acclimated to college hockey and step in next year without burning any eligibility, great. If he plays, so what....go out and recruit another great goaltender.

UNH has an outstanding goalie coach in Dan Lupi of Goaltending Development Services (GDS).
http://unhwildcats.com/sports/mice/coaches/Dan_Lupi
Danny Tirone has worked with GDS instructors since the summer of 2010:

Tirone will have ready access to GDS staff now that he is in Massachusetts/New Hampshire (as opposed to Iowa).
