Of course:)

The recently renovated Civic Center should be good. Wish they would play there every year. I think there was talk of that with Maine playing in Manchester too.

That is correct! They play each other 4 times one each at their places then Portland / Verizon... In other news tonight is the banquet we bought Tix but both of us are sick so not 100 % sure if we're gonna make it :(

No big surprises there. Good that you recovered for the dinner.

Amazing what sleep cold meds can do! Goumas MVP...TVR /Knodel defensive players of the year...Goumas/Sorkin offensive players of the year. Awesome Senior speeches...etc Welp that's a wrap! ;). C-H-C was there (great to see ya as always!) feel free to make corrections if I've messed up in my reporting ;)

What is that all about? Trevor missed more than 1/3 of the season. They had a better record without him than with him. How do you get awarded Co-Def player if you miss that much play? That doesn't smell right.

UNH was 13-11-1 with TVR, 9-7 without him (I included second Union game without him). UNH was no. 1 in SOS with him, but dropped to no. 8 in SOS by end of regular season (no. 5 in SOS after Hockey East tournament). I would argue that if TVR had not broken his leg, UNH would have won three or four of the five regular season losses without him, and been as high as 10th or 11th seed in the NCAAs. He ended up with 0.8846 points per game, third best for Div 1 D-men, compared with Knodel's 0.6829. I think TVR deserved to co-share with Knodel; good call by his teammates (or, is it coaches, or sport writers?).

Rod Langway Best Defensemen Award is presented to the best defenseman as voted by his teammates. Co-Winners for 2013-14 season are Eric Knodel and Trevor van Riemsdyk.

Guy Smith Award is given to the player who made the best offensive contributions to the team. Co-Winners for 2013-14 season are Kevin Goumas and Matt Willows.

Roger A. Leclerc Award is presented to the team's most valuable player and sportsman. The winner for 2013-14 is Kevin Goumas.

Robert A. Kullen Award is presented to the unsung hero as voted by the team. The winner for 2013-14 is Nick Sorkin.

Mike thanks for the correction on the offensive award I had Willows in my original post...Nick Sorkin was most deserving of the Kullen award. Interestingly on the way home my husband and I discussed TvR receiving that award and he was quick to point out his contributions to the point of injury. He had 26 points and who knows what by seasons end. Nonetheless guess its all water under the bridge he moves on and so do we! I'm glad he got the chance to address the crowd and he will be missed!!

Snively I would agree that UNH would've benefitted from his presence and that is not to take away from the stellar play of Brett Pesce and others who stepped up to fill the gaps. Coach U lamented last night in his season overview that they were possibly one game out from the NCAA (reg season). Still making it as far as they did given the ups and downs of the season was a great accomplishment IMHO :)

try 13-12-1 with him ( they were losing when he got hurt ) and 9-6 without him. Played against 6 ranked teams in the last 1/3 rd of the season, of which 4 made it to the NCAA tournament. ( in the first 26 games- only 6 of the opponents made it to the tourney- you do the math ). Beat a 15 ranked NE team to get to HE Semi and beat a top 10 team to get to the HE finals. Trevor played less than 2/3 of the games. It really isn't about if's and butts, couldas or shouldas, you gotta play the games. That's like saying Sidney Crosby should have been league MVP but his concussion got in the way.

But, he went down 17 minutes into the game, so if UNH was so much better without him, they should have been able to come back and win that one. So, I will stick with my W-L math. When TVRs season ended, 10 of their opponents were ranked and 9 of them would have made the NCAAs based on the PWR at the time (I am trying to compare apples and apples here, rather than apples and oranges, just as I did with SOS).

But, unless you are suggesting that TVR paid off his teammates with part of his signing bonus for a co-share of best D-man on the team, not sure what you mean by "doesn't smell right."

As far as Sydney Crosby for NHL MVP, I think that is a ridiculous analogy, although TVR was the only UNH player nominated for the Hobey Baker fan vote this year.

Told second hand from someone who works at UNH that Justin Agosta will be playing college hockey next year . . . at Quinnipiac.

Sat behind Mr. Agosta (and next to two other UNH guys). It was clear that Mr. Agosta doesn't like the coach (probably because his son didn't play at all last year).

If you were discussing it on the way home then it suggests that one of you may not have felt it was the right choice. Bottom line is that he missed over 1/3 of the games this past season, and they were essentially the most important ones. I have never seen the plaque that is given out, but I doubt that it says " given to the best defenseman that plays a minimum of 60% of the season" What I am suggesting is that the right thing to do is exclude him from the eligibility for the award...but the Staff seems to think he is special. Not saying it is tvr's fault. He is not the one singling himself out. Did you notice that he was the only player nominated for the Hobey from UNH? Goumas had a hell of a year, and was playing pretty well at the time when names were submitted. The UNH staff only submitted one name, while many other schools submitted multiple. Maybe the two of them should have shared the MVP award as well. Makes you say Hmmmmm?
I wasn't there at the awards but am I understanding that Trevor spoke to the banquet group?

Yeah we did banter around the issues you have presented. Like I said hubby being the stats guy pointed out pretty much what Snively mentions. Trevor did address the crowd; his words to Coach U that he hopes he gets that Natiinal title because "no one deserves it or wants it more". Before the end if the night they played a video using U 2's "Still haven't found What I'm looking for" with UNH past glories and the D1 title plaque in the background. Thought that was interesting FWIW dept.

Fascinating on Agosta. No comment.

Re: UNH Wildcats 2014 Post-Season Thread: "Maybe Dick" Hunts the Great White Whale

Ha, U-2, and not ABBA; What say you, Chuck?

My understanding is that a school's staff does not nominate its own Hobey candidates, but rather each of the 59 head coaches gets to pick three candidates in conference and three candidates overall, according to the Hobey website. So, Goumas not getting selected was not the direct consequence of UNH staff picks, but rather lack of votes from the other nine Hockey East head coaches.

Also, one of the four Hobey criteria is that nominees have played in 50% of total season games, which is typically done by early January. So, missing a lot of games the first part of a season would rule out a candidate, whereas getting injured the second half of the season obviously does not.

I also doubt that UNH staff had any influence in choosing candidates for individual team awards, as C-H-C notes that all of these awards are voted by the players.

Re: UNH Wildcats 2014 Post-Season Thread: "Maybe Dick" Hunts the Great White Whale

In June 2009, Eric Knodel was drafted by the Toronto Maple Leafs in the 5th round. In the 2010-11 season, Knodel was a freshman at UNH and did not suit up for a single game. In the subsequent three seasons, Knodel steadily improved in all aspects of the game.

In Knodel's sophomore year, he played in all 37 games, scoring 3 goals and 9 assists with a +2 rating. In 2012-13, he played in 38 out of 39 games, scored 10 goals and 11 assists, and had a +14 rating. This season, Knodel played in all 41 games and posted 7 goals and 22 assists with a +16 rating.

Knodel was selected as the Captain of this year's team and was co-winner of the Rod Langway Best Defenseman Award. Although he didn't attend the Awards Banquet last evening - he's with the Toronto Marlies who are in the AHL Playoffs - he sent an email to the gathering which was read by Jeff Wyer. Eric Knodel's parents were involved in coordinating some aspects of the banquet.

Although Justin Agosta did not attend the Awards Banquet, his name and accomplishments were mentioned with the rest of the senior class. His name and video highlights of his play were included, along with his senior teammates, in the film that was shown midway through the banquet.
