Re: UNH Wildcats 2014 Post-Season Thread: "Maybe Dick" Hunts the Great White Whale

Which brings me back to the whole UMass Lowell thing. There are a LOT of similarities between UML and UNH, if you consider that at both schools, D-1 Men's Hockey is the flagship team and primary revenue generator for their respective schools. Both play in arenas that were built within anout a year of each other, and were both seen at that time as landmark developments in their communities. Both programs can look back at a past history led by iconic coaches (Holt at UNH, Riley at UML) who put their programs on the map. And now both programs have an alum who played with the program under their iconic predecessors, and both have now won a pair of HE Tourney titles while in charge of their respective programs. Both programs have now been to the Frozen Four. I won't go into fanbase comparisons at the risk of pandering, other than to say there are plenty of similarities there as well.

I'm not sure if I posted it on this thread or on another one in recent days ... but it will be interesting to see if UMass Lowell becomes the "next UNH", with strong RS performances, some success in the HE tourney, but ultimately coming up short in the D-1's ... OR ... if they become the "next UMaine", which had a slightly longer period of success, won more HE titles, and did manage to get over the hump to win two D-1 tourneys (ironically with one against UNH, the other ... well, we'll omit the obligatory reference to "clouds" for today).

There is every reason to believe UMass Lowell will be a force in HE (and possibly nationally) for the forseeable future. As a UNH fan, I can either be jealous - which I choose not to be - OR I can simply expect that the folks in charge of the UNH program will just have to "up their game" to compete with the best. Why should I begrudge a program like UML any success they might enjoy, so long as they are doing it on the up-and-up ... just because UNH can't or hasn't been able to keep up??

If I take anything out of UML's recent rise to power, it is that if it can happen in Lowell, why not again in Durham?

Good luck to the Riverhawks. I'm kinda sorta rooting for you guys this weekend.

I disagree that the Lowell model is one to be emulated. Remember my typical post, where UNH has had no USHL top 40 scorers in 5 years (except for Goumas, who made #40)? Well, Lowell is pretty close -- they have two: Derek Arnold (#13, 2010), Ryan McGrath #31 2011; Mike fallon #22 (2012). A lot of their talent is drawn from the lesser leagues, the NAHL and EJHL. Finding those players like Hellenbuyck, Folin and Chapie in those leagues requires so much luck that I wouldn't count on it being repeatable.
Without the top end kids, they have to buy into the hard-work model (that Umile would drool over). Whether a team finds the right mix to get that buy-in is iffy.

If 10 years ago you would have told me that UNH fans would be discussing emulating Lowell in anything relating to hockey, I'd have told you to put the bottle down and call your sponsor. Regardless of your position on the issue, that it's a topic to begin with is surreal to me. After suffering through painful mediocrity at the hands of MacDonald, what Bazin has done is nothing short of miraculous. I, for one, am all for replacing the statue of Kerouac with the likeness of Norm.

Okay UNH fans, let me guess who you'll be rooting for today, BC or UMass-Lowell? For my guess, I'd put it at about 75% for UML....how'd I do?

75%?!?! Really?? :-)

I'll take the over on that one.

Lowell, love the story, and could see the town from my backyard in Nashua.

HA! Love the 'see the town' from backyard. Vaguely reminiscent ;) UML is a great story; have tons of respect for what Norm Bazin and Co have put together. They just get the job done. MK...if I have to pick one...guess it would be UML...at any rate it will be some game!

I do not have a bird in this fight, but I am thinking the ospreys over the eagles 3-2 in OT.

Love it Snively65! I was talking to my daughter about team mascots at the UML v UNH game and I remarked "what IS a RiverHawk, exactly?" She replied with her usual caustic wit, "Mom, what's a Wildcat?" 'Nuff said! :p Seriously tho your prediction is pretty interesting...two great teams! Personally I think it's going to come down to A. Goaltending B. Goaltending. C. Can the Eagles deal with those talented lines Bazin has D. Will the Trio of HAG stand up or...

There actually is such thing as a wildcat. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wildcat . The wildcat is native to Europe but the name is also a general term for a number of smaller cats native to the US. Like the bobcat, when UNH used to have a live mascot way, way back in the day.

I got nothing on a riverhawk though....

Angry pigeon. From a UML alum.

Is this a trick question?

I'll take the over on that, too.

Let's put it this way ... if Walshy somehow returned behind the UMaine bench, was trash-talking Coach York throughout the game, all the while slipping his kids large wads of cash between shifts, I'd have a dilemma. But I'd probably end up kinda sorta still rooting for UMaine while holding my nose.

For me anyway ... rooting for BC under ANY circumstances would be ike rooting for the IRS.

Just saw this on Facebook regarding the BC victory "well it IS an even year"...Would love to have that problem! :) Congrats to the Eagles...

I'm usually on the same page with Chuck, but not in this instance, which I know puts me in the vast minority.

Personally, I thought it was pretty cool during a timeout in the closing moments, with a trip to the Frozen Four on the line, that Mike Ayers had a clipboard on the BC bench.

Plus, shouldn't all UNH fans be rooting for the Eagles since "our Johnny" is their star?:D:D

Re: UNH Wildcats 2014 Post-Season Thread: "Maybe Dick" Hunts the Great White Whale

Call it jealousy if you like but I have a hard time rooting for any team that hasn't won it all before. Call it bass ackwards logic if you like but I don't want any new first time winners until UNH is a first time winner. At least not somebody that I don't find long suffering, Minn-Duluth didn't bother me couple years back and Yale was only slightly irritating. But Lowell no matter how bad life has been (and it has been ugly) for the "angry pigeons" (I like that) they can't be long suffering if I remember when they joined Div I hockey. Now Providence they would fit in the very irritating but just OK group because they were good way back when... but that would still be a tough one them being in hockey east and all.

I have a hard time rooting for BC, so yesterday I wanted a good game. Got some strange looks as I cheered for every goal and every great stop yesterday.

Hockeyref, I hope you youtubed the Cox-Hislop-Clark video from1974 and Snively...if you think that our win over N.Dakota was something, watch that....for my existence with UNH hockey, some 39 years now, the best minute of hockey ever!
Oh I have seen that! Just unbelievable...can only imagine that happening today, for ANY team. They don't make em..like they used to! Must've been wild to have seen that in person! Great hockey memories for some of you!

Thank You 'Cats!!

The best I've seen in my era was the 2002 Hockey East quarterfinal at the Whitt vs Merrimack, UNH is down 3-0 in the 2nd period of game 2 and Haydar nets two and Horst the other in less than 2 minutes (including two in thirty seconds) to tie it. Thought the roof was going to come off the place, have never heard the Whitt as loud before or since. <a href="http://www.uscho.com/box/mens-hockey/2002/03/09/merrimack-vs-new-hampshire/">box score</a>

Agreed. My ears were popping from the spl during that sequence.

The UNH 'Club Cats' won their National Championship today... 5-3. Congrats!
Two of UNH's three hockey teams have now won a national title, just one to go...

Pretty Cool:) Where can I get Championship gear?
Bought a 1998 women's hockey national champions bumpersticker at Town & Campus about a decade or so ago. If they were clever they'd print up "UNH Hockey - 2014 National Champions" shirts and sweatshirts ;) :D

I maybe wrong but I don't think I saw ONE THING about this club championship...anywhere..on the main UNH website. Yeah some UNH groups tweeted about it...congratulated them. I tweeted to the UNH radio show about including a mention/ shout out to this...Looking at all the excitement of the weekend (for other teams in the Regionals) sure does make ya want to be a part of it, huh! Not trying to knock the U but these guys in that picture are some happy about their accomplishments...I think they believe they deserve something and I hope it gets recognized. Women's Lax in 1985 is the other National Title UNH holds...Sure a club championship isn't nearly as glitzy as say, a D1 title ;) but you take pride in it nonetheless. I know their coach sure does! I'd buy the gear!!
