Re: UNH Wildcats 2014 Post-Season Thread: "Maybe Dick" Hunts the Great White Whale

I found this the most interesting, Coach Umile referring to the departure of TvR:
"We never, ever talked, he never told me he was leaving,” Umile said. “But the opportunity was going to be there, and it’s very, very difficult … to keep a junior that’s that talented.”

Isn't it courtesy, if nothing else, for the player to let his coach know what's going on? Just wondering -- this struck me as odd.

As far as Agosta being mentioned as leaving the team early, the reporter gave no other info -- it seems as if this were breaking news the writer would say more. I suppose he could be wrong, and just going on rumor. Hope that's all it is.

Like you I kind of went huh? You guys never had that discussion? I mean...he (Umile) had to know it could be coming...but for it to be a surprise...just, odd. That's ok...I nearly hyperventilated over the news; haha. It's still "settling in". Oh well. Such is the life of a fan. Hubby informed me I 'better get used to it'.

Re: UNH Wildcats 2014 Post-Season Thread: "Maybe Dick" Hunts the Great White Whale

Perhaps the secret to success, is to have older player's. Was listening to Barry mullet Melrose, mentioned that union college had like 12 players age 24 and six more age 23. This could be a recipe for success not that older is better but certainly more experience . Like to see UNH kind of go with same philosophy, realizing this years crop of incoming freshman are considerably older.

Isn't the reason they have more experience because they needed more experience? When you played kickball in elementary school, why was it that the same kids were always picked last? Correlation or coincidence?

yes, but would you rather have an 18 year old or a 22 year provided that had similar skill level. Personally I will take a team of 22 year olds

Playground protocol dictates selection by alphabetical order...or so I was told.

Really? With similar skill levels but 4 years' age difference, the 18 year-old has a bigger upside in terms of talent, n'est ce pas?

tell that to Niagara years back that knocked off unh and throw in RIT as well years later, both had ancient players

Kevin G gets a little press time as he makes his pro debut tonight with the Phantoms about 2:20 ish in:

And here's his interview:

http://chirb.it/0vgk7L

Said he will prob. center the 4th line...game sounds like it will be a wild one as the two teams had 150 plus minutes of penalty time in their meeting last week

Depends on when the game is being played. If it's the 22 year olds vs. the 18 year olds, and they are level on talent AT THE TIME THE GAME IS BEING PLAYED, you'd be nuts to opt for the 18 year olds. If you're playing for the future ... different issue.

You only have so many years in college to get it just right. And you don't always have your best guys for 4 years (or 3 years or even 2 years sometimes), especially if they're the highly-touted 18 yr. olds and 19 yr. olds, having been drafted high up in the NHL draft, who are always going to have designs on the next step. It's a trite saying nowadays ... but it is what it is.

If you stack your roster with solid "overage" players who you know you can count on for those 3-4 years ... it's not foolproof, but that's been the formula for lots of programs' successes.

Including UNH at certain times in their history.

Agreed Chuck , point came up over the Union game. Stacked with 24 year olds including a bunch of 23 year olds. You also got to believe these older dude's are probably just a little more physically developed in stature. As in slightly more muscle mass. Put it this way it cant hurt having a bunch of seasoned veterans on your team.

Good to see the team and goalie that we beat at the Garden last Friday night shut out the NC runner up last night in Bridgeport. My PWR simulator had our Cats flipping the Friars for that slot in Bridgeport had we beaten the Riverhawks last Saturday night, which earlier in this thread or late in the previous thread, I predicted would be our destiny to reach the FF by going through Union. So close, yet so far. Rematch with the Dutchmen to begin next season, eh?

This info from Al Pike's article this morning in Foster's suggests that Matt Willows' is a strong candidate for team captain:

He (Willows) didn’t miss a game while playing through a nagging shoulder injury the second half of the season.

“He was a warrior for us,” said coach Dick Umile. “That rubs off on a lot of people. He’s good in the locker room. He does it by example. He’s out there playing hard every night.”

Also, Willows was the Captain of the Jersey Hitmen in his final season in the EJHL (the predecessor to the USPHL).

A big reason the fighting is discouraged, penalties are so severe in college. There is potential for a man being in an altercation with a boy.

Speaking and taking a few audience questions at a pregame mid season event, Coach was asked something along the lines of who is the team's most aggressive/annoying/toughest/maybe even dirtiest player. I can't remember the exact wording of the question or answer, but Coach replied something to the effect of the coaching staff discouraging that type of play, but it would have to be Matt Willows.

We were the least penalized team in HEA this year. Commendable, but Willows and Camper hitting people in the corners, even taking the occasional "bad" penalty can be a good thing. Opponents need to know there is a price. Keep your head up because while you may come out of the corner with the puck, you are just as likely to come out with a headache.

With 7.93 minutes per game, UNH was the third least penalized team in Div 1, only behind UConn and AIC. Only UML, Minnesota, and St Cloud were in the 10 least penalized teams that made the NCAAs. So, having low numbers in penalties and SOS are not necessarily a recipe for success.

Goumas scores his first pro goal to give his team the Phantoms the 3-2 lead!!! They had just remarked 'what a speedy forward' he was...yeah Kevin!!! :D (pom poms are out haha)

Fliers should call him up for game against the Bruins tomorrow night, as Fliers are 4 points out of home ice.

wouldn't that be something...AND he scores in the shoot out, unfortunately they lost but he did earn the #2 star for his team! Not too shabby for his second start...:D

I had thought this when I saw he signed with them, but for the April 5th game in Boston since I'm possibly going to that game. As I understand it however it is an amateur tryout this year and an AHL only contract next year so there is no chance of that happening. Good to see him represent himself well tonight however.
