UNH Wildcats 2014/2015 - Wait 'Til Next Year!!!

Re: UNH Wildcats 2014/2015 - Wait 'Til Next Year!!!

Off the top of my head I'm thinking it might have happened in 1995-96 (first year the Whittemore Center was open.) Hockey really struggled that year and basketball had been pretty good for a couple seasons prior to that. But I couldn't swear to it.

EDIT: Just looked it up, and it appears it didn't happen that year.

Yeah, I thought about the 1995-96 season too, but the "glory years" of UNH basketball, when they had Scott Drapeau and Matt Alosa torching the opposition ended with the 1994-95 season.

With those stats that year being the last you can see on the unh site, prob is it; but I imagine there's someone out there (Chuck? either Snivelies? Greg A?) But I am thinking this years team, with all its growing pains, injuries, other adversity that we have hashed out enough, prob. won't make the mark of the 11-12 team: 15-19-3 I remember asking my daughter if we should go to a hockey game that year and she said, 'nah...they aren't very good' this season :p 'Course the next year things were much better in 12-13, UNH was #1 in the nation (til the second half of the season where we ended up 10th going into the Regionals). Well gang things kind of go in cycles and bball might be...due some success they haven't had. Still...who could see what was coming for this year when:

1. We lost all of our experienced D
2. We had a goal keeper issue/'distraction' (not my word for it)
3. We had to replace the goal scoring of the Goumas, Sorkin, Willows line
4. We have had to deal with (most teams do) injuries to key players we can't afford to lose (Pesce)
5. On any given moment on the ice we skate 3 to 4 Freshmen.

These are things we all know already just keeps me focused I guess on the task at hand, one game at a time. Next year one thing I'll bet we will be missing is the contributions of the top 3 Seniors Downing, Willows (whom I was glad to see play well last night) and Thrush.

Onto tonight....

The 1995 hockey team ended up 22-10-4....basketball ended up 19-9...so its possible it could have happened sometime that season.

If it didn't happen then I suppose it could have happened in the mid-80's...hockey only won in single digits a couple of those seasons.

1985-86 hockey was 5-29-3, basketball 11-17

As expected Clarky gets the start tonight. Including him we'll start 5 Frosh on D! Go 'Cats!

Re: UNH Wildcats 2014/2015 - Wait 'Til Next Year!!!

If UNH doesn't win tonight my interest will wane significantly!!

Re: UNH Wildcats 2014/2015 - Wait 'Til Next Year!!!

That wave off of Downing's goal is freakin nuts. Another example of an awesome athletic play by Downing only to get denied! Bullchit!!

Re: UNH Wildcats 2014/2015 - Wait 'Til Next Year!!!

I'll say that the Cats have just about hit rock bottom after tonight's fiasco in Durham. Poor officiating, lackluster defense, and loss of composure with several members of the team. On the flip side, Maine brought it and knew how to win.

I'm speechless.

I only could listen on the radio, and of course the UNH radio guys are not allowed to say what we write here. But, they did note that Willows getting tossed in the third in exchange for a second-tier D-man was not a smart move. I will give our five frosh D-men (is five right?) and our frosh goalies a pass, but we cannot have one of our senior leaders getting thrown out of the game.

Has anyone noticed the Whitt is warmer the last 2 two games? Serious question.

I'd be curious what you and other UNH fans made of Maine's disallowed goal. It looked to me like the majority of the contact with UNH's goalie was from the UNH dman. I thought both team's disallowed goals should have counted.

Re: UNH Wildcats 2014/2015 - Wait 'Til Next Year!!!

This might be a good year to start following your basketball team.

That might be one of the most reasonable comments I've seen on this thread ever.

After completing the "bottom feeder" section of their schedule, UNH manages a split against Amherst and a sweep at the hands of UMO. Not the results we hoped for and very telling when it comes to this season's team and their mental toughness. Ten games remain, all against better teams. Honestly, who cares how they do down the stretch record wise. They will finish out the string, go on the road the first weekend of HE play and be eliminated. End of story. In that time, the goalie rotation will continue, which is good for next season and the frosh will have that much more D1 experience which I guess is the point of the entire season.

In the meantime, I just don't want to read any lame quotes in the paper from players or head coach about how "they've got to play with a sense of urgency" or "they can't be out competed".....fill in your own canned phrase there. Whatever they say along those lines borders on the rediculous at this point. Let's just come to terms with the fact that this team reached it's ceiling a while back and move forward to what's hopefully a better season in 15-16. If it makes you feel any better Ref, you don't even have to put away your pom poms if you don't want...

Seriously? Warmer? Who knows. Who cares. Maybe they're trying to entice the geriatric crowd not to leave with 15 minutes left in the third?

Funny you should say that coz we were remarking the same thing tonight...

Welp gang the wheels did indeed come off the proverbial wagon tonight that is for sure. Watching Matt Willows get a 10 min major hurt and the team just fell apart.

Thought they were the most disjointed as I've ever seen them play this year...or ever quite honestly in my short tenure following them. When Downings goal was disallowed that was pretty much it. It is what it is and this season is what it is. Don't say we didn't know going in gang!

Not going to lose any sleep over it and thanks for the permission to keep my pom poms out if I want, haha. My apologies for trying to keep it positive where ever possible. I'll enjoy my remaining time this season and keep that to myself. Aerman catch ya at the next FOMH gig after the BU game. OOPS the UConn game but sadly I won't be there. Been fun catching up...at least I know where ya sit, ;) Don't forget to wear blue . Over and out for abit...peace out.

Re: UNH Wildcats 2014/2015 - Wait 'Til Next Year!!!

My video feed was perfect last night. It was actually quite good. What was not good was watching UNH flail around in the second period. Between the penalties and weak play both shorthanded and 5-on-5, it's no wonder Tirone was under siege. He made some good stops but also could have been better on at least one of the goals. UNH hung in there in the third and made it interesting for a little while at the end but … another road loss. This part of the Umile era so reminds me of the late stages of the Holt era. Some good players, jut not enough of them.

That's been my developing concern for some time now ... and unfortunately this season is showing a real dip down to a level we haven't seen in quite awhile. Unless UNH somehow finds a level of consistent positive play that's eluded them up to this point, this year's team will post the worst record of the Coach Umile era. And the unthinkable - last place in Hockey East, especially in a year when there is a new member in the league - is suddenly not so far-fetched. That would put a major dent in the long-term recruiting process, no doubt.

I'll check back in after next weekend, as that's the end of the 7 game stretch I targeted a few weeks ago, and while UNH is 2-3-0 during that stretch, it's the way they've gotten there that's so troubling. The team's apparent absolute dependency on Pesce - a player who is no better than 50-50 on returning for his senior season - also offers a troubling outlook on the prospects of a quick turnaround next year.

Here's to hoping that chronically overrated Notre Dame provides the perfect remedy to what ails the 'Cats next weekend ... but even if it does, I still share Greg's concerns about the outlook going forwards. If you put the program's records over the last decade on a graph, there wouldn't be any sharp drops from year to year. But from beginning to end, it's unmistakable. And not comforting. JMHO.

Seemed really warm, nearly hot, where we were. There was a puddle on the ice near the boards in front of Sec 114 for most of the game.
