UNH Wildcats 2014/2015 - Wait 'Til Next Year!!!

Re: UNH Wildcats 2014/2015 - Wait 'Til Next Year!!!

Some other random thoughts after 33 hours flying home from Christchurch. UNH win dumped PC out of NCAAs if they were to start today based on PWR. UNH moved from tie at 38th to tie at 36th in PWR, leapfrogging Notre Dame, and now just two PWR points behind NU, which also has come on strong recently. NU ahead of UNH 8 pts to 5 in HEA games, but UNH has four games in hand. PC ahead of UNH 12 pts to 5 in HEA, but UNH has three games in hand. No reason that UNH should not come away with all 12 points over the next three weekends, but even 8-10 points should get them back into home ice territory for the HEA playoffs. UNH scores 2.70 GPG, which is good for 29th in Div 1, and gives up 2.70 GPG, which is only good for 35th. However, UNH ranks 14th in PK, but only 41st in PP. Please note, no mention of the stat that begins with S in this post.

Love the optimism. My take is this...

We are 3-1-1 in our last 5 games, with two wins and an OT loss against Top 15 teams. We are averaging 3.6gpg in that span, giving up 2.2gpg. We have an emerging young goaltender (but two games do not a trend make!), and seem to be producing a bit more in the offensive zone. All of these things could portend a nice second half.

While I can't get behind a 12-point, 3-weekend prediction, I'd be happy with 4-2 or 4-1-1!

Re: UNH Wildcats 2014/2015 - Wait 'Til Next Year!!!

Mullins is much nicer than Conte IMO with a much bigger concourse and better seating

I think it was built a few years after Conte (could be wrong?) so maybe some design tweaks improved the basics at Mullins, but if you look at the basic design, it's really very similar. And for all the grief I've given "Bandwagon Nation" over the years, it's hard to compare the fan support BC enjoys with the support out in Amherst.

Personally, I think the concourse seems wider, and the seating options look better only because there are usually a lot less fans in the stands in Amherst than there are at Chestnut Hill.

And that's even before the usual late arrivals at Conte are considered. Must be a "Forum" thingie. :D

Re: UNH Wildcats 2014/2015 - Wait 'Til Next Year!!!

It is Mullin (no s), built exactly 25 years after Conte, with about 500 more seats.

Trivia question: which ice rink is located on Commonwealth Avenue?

(Disclosure: I spend a fair bit of time at UMass, but only the one post-season game at Mullin).

Ever wonder how many national championships the Minutemen might have if they had successfully poached Umile from UNH?

Enjoy Mullin; it is nice facility, deserving of a better home team. I only have been there for an unhappy two and done by our Cats in the NCAA regionals a few years ago.

Fixed your post

UNH won its first game (in ot) then lost in the regional final (on Easter Sunday)

UNH beat Harvard in an OT thriller in the first game and then lost to eventual national champion Denver the next day. 2005 Northeast regionals.

Dan Winnick scored the OT winner against Harvard in a great come from behind game. The next day UNH lost another heartbreaker in the regional final. Brett Hemingway hit the post late in the third that would have tied the game...sigh...

Re: UNH Wildcats 2014/2015 - Wait 'Til Next Year!!!

Never really cared for the Mullin Center. Always seemed dingy to me. Perhaps that's just the leftover residue from Coach Cal's time there. There aint a power washer strong enough to clean that place up after his years there.

Not to mention the trip to Amherst itself sucks. Always marveled at the UNH fans who whine about the trek to Orono. Would rather make that trip any day compared to the UMass jaunt.

Re: UNH Wildcats 2014/2015 - Wait 'Til Next Year!!!

Thanks for corrections. Also, I was wrong about the name, as it is the William D. Mullins (with an 's') Center (HR and others are right; do not always trust Google links).

In retrospect, I think UNH played well at Mullins in those two NCAA games (I only could attend the second one), with a goalie not highly touted, and DU was awesome in their back-to-back NC's.

My son and I went to the first game against Harvard. I had to miss the second game, but was in downtown Ft Worth TX because of work and set out to watch it on television. I'm standing out like a sore thumb walking to a sports bar in my UNH hockey jersey thinking I'm the only UNH hockey fan within 1500 miles. I walk into the place, and unbelievably, there are about 10 people all in there in UNH colors. We all kinda stared at each other for a few seconds...turned out it was most of Brad Flaishans' immediate family there to watch the game... Still one of the more bizarre things I've ever experienced. They were nice and invited me to join them.

That was a good UNH team that year that just couldn't get a few breaks to move on to the FF.

Winnik also scored on a penalty shot that weekend.
