Re: UNH Wildcats 2014/2015 - Wait 'Til Next Year!!!

The Dec. 11 article from The New Hampshire on DeSmith pleading not guilty, etc has been removed, now a 404 error http://thenewhampshire.wordpress.com/2014/12/11/desmith-pleads-not-guilty-charges-tentative-to-be-dropped/

An earlier TNH article that cites Fosters and states DeSmith admitted to the assault remains posted http://thenewhampshire.wordpress.com/2014/12/08/desmith-admits-to-assault-will-attend-counseling/

Can't help myself...have to respond in this way: EDIT: Star Trek fans will appreciate the ending!

Re: UNH Wildcats 2014/2015 - Wait 'Til Next Year!!!

UNH Wildcats Fan, I am not reposting, but thanks for your original post.

Not all "self-professed Wildcats fan(s) could be (were) so cynical and venomous". Initially, I took a wait and see position, started leaning to Casey's defense as I heard snippets contrary to what was reported. I don't know Casey or his family, but people whose character and judgment I have the utmost respect for do.

Casey's dismissal from the team is rough, especially since he has been a long time fan of the team and understood what UNH Hockey means to the community as much has anyone who ever played for the 'cats. I will always remember his acknowledgment of the "Hey Desmith, we're all behind you" cheer from the student section. However, I do not take issue with his dismissal from the team. Mock Coach if you want, but UNH athletes, who are the University's public representatives, are held to a higher standard. Is every athlete penalized for every misdeed? No, but in these times with they way this story broke I think UNH did the right thing, erring on the side of public relations caution.

There is no question that Casey was and should not have been completely and inexcusably over intoxicated, but it is looking more and more like that was his only mistake. Reemphasis on inexcusable, but considering my and countless other students (including hockey players) college recreational behavior (most of mine is amusing to those who find Animal House funny), I am giving him the benefit of the ever shrinking doubt.

I think this is the pretty much the right way to look at it. To their credit, neither Casey nor his family have publicly criticized UNH or the coaching staff or the athletic department for the steps they took or the decisions they arrived at. In fact, I believe the statement they issued said something to the effect that once the accusation against Casey was made, the school had no choice but to fully investigate it. Which is absolutely correct. But personally, I do think it's sad that because of the way the story broke, as you put it, "erring on the side of public relations caution" was their final decision -- and one that ultimately led to Casey's permanent removal from the team. It didn't have to. Yes, a thorough investigation needed to take place, and that takes time. It did take place -- and the school found him not responsible for causing harm to his accuser or anyone else. By that point, he had already paid a very high price for what in reality was a night that never should have amounted to anything more than another example of "college recreational behavior." Jettisoning him permanently may have been easier from a PR standpoint, but was it fair to this student-athlete? Does the punishment fit the crime? I guess that's ultimately a matter of opinion.

Casey DeSmith will have a very bright future despite this incident -- of that I'm sure. He's a very good student and more importantly, a very good person. Anyone who knows him knows that. My purpose in posting to this forum was just to let the UNH hockey fans here know what the real outcomes of the investigations were, because there has been a lot of misinformation thrown around, in particular the shockingly irresponsible mistruths published in Foster's. Casey DeSmith's actions both before and after this incident have been nothing but positive. Like a true 'Cat, he will undoubtedly land on his feet.

Re: UNH Wildcats 2014/2015 - Wait 'Til Next Year!!!

Fascinating indeed. TNH removed the article in which DeSmith attempts to correct the misinformation presented in the Foster's article, but left the original story referencing the error-filled Foster's article on its website. Doesn't seem like a very fair-minded thing to do, does it? I wonder who made that decision -- and why?

Thank you, and I am glad to hear that it does not sound like a typical domestic abuse situation. My initial inclination -- borne of seeing a lot of other teams' fanboys defending violence and abusive behavior -- is to err on the side of the police/accusors. My family has had some brief interaction with Casey's family, so this incident seemed way out of character. If the evidence now seems to favor DeSmith's version, hopefully he can move on with a lesson learned about placing himself in a bad situation.

Here's another video that might interest you if you didn't see it this morning

http://espn.go.com/video/clip?id=12026800

Saw it briefly but then forgot about it so glad you posted it! Of course this week I will do the obligatory "find out all I can about the UNH FBall team thing " so I'll have half a clue. Goldrich, right, is the Qback? ;) So far, so good! haha it will be fun esp as hubby loves football (I am a fair weather Pats fan :p ) and we'll be glad to be there.

So let me get this straight..
The victim is a liar.
The police are liars.
Fosters lied.
The UNH investigation lied.
Umile is a liar.
The only honest one here is the assailant.
Mmmkay. And you're not a family member.
Sounds like a conspiracy of epic proportion.

I am making the trek...Can you tailgate?

Hmm I do believe so there are specific areas for that but I don't know the particulars. We want to catchup to some people we know who go regularly; they do tail gate.. ;) But I thought I had to buy parking anyone out there with good knowledge on this??

Off the unhwildcats website

There is this new thing called "wifi"!! I got an email last summer from someone on Aer Lingus over the Atlantic headed to NYC last summer!!

No wifi where I am going tomorrow morning; next few hours in Christchurch will be my last hurrah on the internet for awhile. But, I like your previous post e.cat; good gutsy win for the Cats in Portland, even if against another struggling team, and some unheralded players stepped up. Will need much more of that kind of effort going forward into the second half. Hoping that when I get back online after six weeks in late January, our Cats wil have moved up to sixth place in Hockey East.

Tailgating will be permitted I'm certain. Last game it was moved from Boulder Field to A Lot because of conditions, but the Athletic Department website should have the deets. I think they put out the word in an email as well.

Yes Ref, Sean Goldrich is the quarterback. You're off to a good start...;-) Have your hubby give you a crash course in all things UNH football. You've got five days. Seriously, you'll have a great time. Go Cats!!!

As I am so fond of saying, 'Onward, Snively65!! Best to ya. We'll keep the fort. Hopefully we will have an NC football team and our young 'Cats will improve game by game. Smiley face to you...

Thanks, Ref. If both UNH and Bentley win their conference tourneys, and the #1 seed winds up in Manch, and UNH gets a third seed, and both UNH and Bentley win their first games, they would meet to see which team goes to Boston from the NE regional.

You will be missed Snively65. Agreed that was a gutsy win for our Cats. Down 4-3 and then 4 unanswered goals by the Cats. Have a such a great time, stay warm and hopefully you will be pleasantly surprised by UNH Hockey exploits on your return!

Safe travels, Snively65. Stay warm and by the time you get back, I hope we have some hardware for you, even if it's not of the shinny/stickmash variety.

Re: UNH Wildcats 2014/2015 - Wait 'Til Next Year!!!

Today's Seacoast Online story about the UNH v Maine game confirms 2 things: Clark did break his finger in the game (was almost taken out and practice goalie Matt Labbe almost went in for him as Jamie Regan was ill) and that Danny T will indeed be here for second semester in case there was any doubt about that FWIW dept...

Re: UNH Wildcats 2014/2015 - Wait 'Til Next Year!!!

Fosters lied.
The UNH investigation lied.
Umile is a liar.
The only honest one here is the assailant.
Mmmkay. And you're not a family member.
Sounds like a conspiracy of epic proportion.

To be clear:

-It absolutely does appear that the victim lied. A careful reading of the eyewitness testimonies, and of the glaring discrepancies in the victim's own statements, along with even the most cursory review of the other evidence, strongly supports this conclusion.

-No one to my knowledge has said anything critical of the way the police handled their duties.

-Fosters printed information that was completely untrue. Presumably this was an error and not a willful misrepresentation of the facts, but that doesn't excuse them from the responsibility to report on the outcome of court proceedings accurately and without bias.

-No one has faulted the UNH investigation. It arrived at the proper conclusion.

-No one has faulted Coach Umile, though in my opinion Casey DeSmith should have been allowed to return to the team once it was determined that he was not responsible for harming anyone. This is the coach's decision, though, and has to be respected.

-Casey DeSmith has indeed been honest throughout this entire process, and true to his character, immediately took responsibility for everything that he did on the night of the incident.

You may choose to ignore or make jokes about this information, GoUNH, but it doesn't make it any less true. I would hope that any real UNH fan would recognize the service that this young man has given to the university and would at least be willing to look at the facts when sitting in armchair judgment of him.

That both the school and the criminal justice system came to the same conclusion about the accusation made against Casey DeSmith should tell any fair-minded person everything he or she needs to know about what really happened that night.
