Re: UNH Wildcats 2014/2015 - Wait 'Til Next Year!!!

Call 'em as you see 'em, right? Good thing NU won else with those seats you'd have needed a post game shower.

Haha we were kind of off to the side but in easy pickins to be sure! They had 2 bands too...and they play our UNH goal song when they score...harrumph! Lots of "dog house" signs up as well. No "litter box" signs from UNH fans (who were very small in attendance) from years past from what I understand. Hubby keeps me grounded during games (a hard thing to do) with the "facts" about what's going on. I give him all the credit... wink.

Which many of us scratched our heads and went "huh" about? The kid went down on the ice...re, the Downing hit penalty given to Correale for "interference". Do I have that right C-H-C??
I watched a replay of the game and it looks like Correale's arm / elbow was coming up when he made contact with the NU player's head as he skated by. That's probably why the refs gave the 5 minutes. Kind of a strange call.

Re: UNH Wildcats 2014/2015 - Wait 'Til Next Year!!!

I see one of your Bentley boys had a hattie last night? Sounds like they are a decent, solid team! Good luck to them as the season wears on...

Don't encourage Snively65 too much with that Bentley fixation of his, HR. He seems determined to wring some synergy out of the whole (currently nonexistent) UNH/Bentley *thing* on this thread. Or even pander to some of their lower-key NH alums. :) ;)

To paraphrase the Hulkster ... "What'cha gonna do when the "Skatin' CPA's" run wild on UNH, brothah??!!" :D

Yes, HR, Bentley junior Andrew Gladiuk had a good night with an assist and three goals, including a meaningful SOG that was also the GWG with 30 sec left in OT. He is now tied with five others for Div 1 lead with 16 points, but has a game in hand over Vecchione (who?).

Both Bentley and UNH have an Yzerman, so what is not to like?

Re: UNH Wildcats 2014/2015 - Wait 'Til Next Year!!!

Unfortunately for the short run, I see no reason - yet - for any post-season optimism. I see UNH finishing ahead of NU, UMass Amherst, UConn and UMaine, and vying for the middle of the pack slots between 6th and 8th place with chronically-overrated Notre Dame and with Merrimack, neither of whom has exactly "run the gauntlet" despite softer-than-a-sneaker-full-of ... spit* schedules to date. I'll stick with my 7th place regular season prediction, with an early postseason exit to follow. Anything better, to me, is a happy bonus. :) [/B]

Not to pick nits with you Chuck, especially about a hypothetical situation with roughly 75% of the season left. But if I read your scenario correctly, UNH finishes 7th, which gives them home ice for the first round, against Northeastern, UConn, UMass or Maine. But then they don't win a game in the series? Of those four schools I think only Maine could perhaps win two at the Whitt, and even then it wouldn't be a sweep.

I know, I'm nitpicking, there is a lot of hockey to play, and at least you made a prediction, which is more than I have done.

Re: UNH Wildcats 2014/2015 - Wait 'Til Next Year!!!

Hey Felger - you make a good point. I'm still admittedly slow in adapting to HE's new "everyone gets a trophy - oops, err - tourney seeding" approach, so it may be a good call for the over on the playoff wins. Then again, for a program known for losing to national powers like Niagara and RIT in past postseasons with supposedly "loaded" teams, it also *could* be a trap?

I'd suggest asking the BC wiseguys for the gambling advice, but they seem to be having their own issues ... :D

Re: UNH Wildcats 2014/2015 - Wait 'Til Next Year!!!

Really enjoyed reading this from an outsider's perspective. Wish NU had someone who would break down the game like this. Well done CHC. Hope y'all enjoyed your time at Matthews, it was a fun game to watch. Good luck the rest of the way.

C-H-C does a great job educating us about not only games like this but of future Wildcats...so by the time they get to UNH we have a rough idea of who they are. Very grateful for his insight! As per the game last night, we did so enjoy our visit to Matthews and will return for future games. Cool atmosphere to be sure. Good luck to you as well as the season rolls on. It's far from over...

Providence shouldl be interesting. A split with NU wasn't too surprising, although more was clearly within reach tonight. Inexperience probably led to the let-down which saw UNH concede the 3rd period equalizer about a minute after they briefly took the lead. Wasn't there, but that happens to young teams all the time. Almost a subconscious sigh of relief/letdown once you get ahead, but at 4-6-0 they're still ahead of my expectations to this point by a full game. I wouldn't be disappointed with another split with PC next weekend, but I get the sense that might be a little tougher to pull off. Certainly it hasn't been the disastrous start it could have been, so there's continued reason for optimism.

Clark seems to be standing up to the burden of playing virtually all the minutes so far. I'm frankly a little surprised Regan hasn't gotten a start yet (not that I recall anyway?), but no complaints as Clark has been living up to his advanced billing. It will be interesting to see if Tirone shows up after the break, or if Coach decides to preserve a year of his eligibility. Personally, I'd let him stay in juniors, but if Coach Umile envisions a long-term Clark/Tirone goalie tandem, we'll find out in about a month.

I was definitively told today by someone who would know that Tirone will be here in late December.

Is this what you are referring to? Eye opening!

Think we are all kind of expecting this, wonder how it will all pan out. Does he get play time...or does he get training through GDS and is held out to avoid losing any eligibility? As we've all seen the trek to D1 is no picnic but it's no secret we need another decent goal tender either. (no disrespect to Jamie R OR current GK Clarky) In time for the UNO series? hmmm... On another note, TvR (alias, Travis) was injured early in the Hawks/Stars game tonight; took a puck to his lower body and didn't return.

Okay. So a little competition raises the bar! That could be a good thing I guess. Clark is good, no complaints here, but one thing I know about Umile is that the status quo isn't good enough!

Coach U hasn't minced any words with using terms like "frustrating" "disappointing" etc. regarding his young teams play when things don't go well... making no "we are just a young bunch" excuses. I hope he is pushing them...and hard.

Ya. Umile was an honest player and he is an honest coach. Gotta like that about him.

Re: UNH Wildcats 2014/2015 - Wait 'Til Next Year!!!

You got me there, Snively. :) Anyway ... if you're gonna continue the Bentley bleating, then I'm starting the Orr24 Channel.

"50 Years Ago in Hockey - Hockey's Next Superstar"

As you noted earlier in your trivia quiz, Chuck, Orr's ridiculous +/- season and +/- career was probably forecasted by his getting drafted at age 12 by the Bruins. I got to meet him once, at a Bentley luncheon a few years ago, and found him to be incredibly humble and soft spoken. Hey, but we have some NHL drafted Wildcats again, right?

Hey Chuck you're preaching to the choir with the whole "swing 'till you hit" thing that permeates all of college hockey, not just HockeyEast. Like you, I date to a time when the league playoffs started on Tuesday, ended on Saturday, and were all single elimination. (None of this best of 3 crap.) But as much as I liked that, we aren't going back to those days, so it is what it is.

Taking a long view, however, the current system could be a building block on the 'Cats return to respectability. If they were to get a 5-8 spot this season, and win a playoff series it could lay the ground work for a deeper playoff run next season.

As for the other stuff, yeah, the losses to Niagara and RIT were embarrassing. (Though I wouldn't characterize either of those UNH squads as "loaded.") On the other hand, those upsets have never been the subject of an ESPN 30 for 30.
