UNH Wildcats 2014/2015 - Wait 'Til Next Year!!!

Re: UNH Wildcats 2014/2015 - Wait 'Til Next Year!!!

Friday night's game against NU very much paralleled the Friday night UML game - started the game on fire and completely dominated the first period, lost the momentum in the second period and the game started to slip away, then got completely dominated for long stretches of the third period.

Re: UNH Wildcats 2014/2015 - Wait 'Til Next Year!!!

One might argue that UNH has attracted faster and smaller players over the years, you know, to make use of "our big sheet," as if we play 100% of our games at Lake Whitt. I have argued for years to dig it up, reduce its width (come on, BS-35+1, we can find the $ from your wealthy donors), and add four rows of premium seats, to end this ridiculous notion for good.
Going to have to re-pour the entire bowl, 'less the new rows would all be on the same level as the previous front row. IF they were to go that route I'd like to see them either
(A) Re-pour the bowl, add rows at the bottom and take an equal number of rows of the top - capacity stays the same but you can increase space on the overly cramped concourse.
Or
(B) Re-pour the bowl, add rows at the bottom and take an equal number of rows of the top then mimic the press box setup on the side of the ice behind UNH's bench and make it "club seating" with food service, etc. to increase revenue.

That said, I'm in the minority that would like to see them revert the corners back and maintain a full sized Olympic.

Re: UNH Wildcats 2014/2015 - Wait 'Til Next Year!!!

My question is/was a 5 minute major warranted? I thought interferrence was a 2 minute minor!

Which many of us scratched our heads and went "huh" about? The kid went down on the ice...re, the Downing hit penalty given to Correale for "interference". Do I have that right C-H-C??

UNH had trouble breaking that little trap or whatever it was the NU threw at them. My husband had a lot to say about a lack of 'hustle' on the forecheck. He isn't overly thrilled about the effort of a couple of key veteran offensive players but it's not worth mentioning it here. Clay Witt may have had a lot of saves, and, some of them big ones esp in the second period, but, he didn't 'stand on his head'. Didn't think our offense had a lot going on; Kelleher struggled abit, just something really missing last night offensively. We will benefit with Fogele and Eiserman gaining experience, as they continue get the play time and on a line that works for them. Anyhoo, Adam Clark, on the other hand, did. The goals scored were largely the result of stuff that could not, would not, get cleared that came around quickly to the front, great opportunistic shots any goalie would struggle with, right in front of him more or less, IMHO. And, wow, we really thought we saw a goal scored (that review) as we were sitting right off that goal line and stood up and said "In the Net"! On the way home my husband pointed out that it was his best game of the season despite the loss and I would agree. He had/ has to be "on" every second NU was in the zone, (or any team so far this season) if you catch my drift as we continue to struggle to clear the D zone. Despite this obvious fact he responded very well and many times his size saved the day as he was shelled repeatedly in that third period. It bothers me he seemed to take it personally but that's a goalies lot I guess..(mother in me, haha). Chuck, I don't think Regan is the answer (an answer) per se, or that he should get a start at this point, and, like you, I wonder what will happen if/when Tirone shows up. Hate to see the kid lose a year of eligibility but who knows. Maybe our D will continue to mature and we 'save him' for later. Who knows? Could be the team gels in a huge way and Tirone is in that mix. Should be interesting! Again we all know Clark didn't ask to be in this spot and I think he's responded admirably.

Not sure I would use the word 'dominated' in the pure sense of the word but I guess it does fit as NU had long stretches of offensive time that we once again, did not throughout the game. That stuff needs to be fixed. Either it comes from them or they don't have it not sure what but I remain realistic and hopeful. The inexperience of the D...well, that is going to take time, but I'll give Marks and Furgele props for last night. Expected more out of Cleland, to be honest. Pesce worked very, very hard out there but he was let down on many transition plays I thought. NU got the monkey off their back, UNH looks to bring consistency with all the new kids on the block. Being ever the optimist...looking forward to see how they do against Gilles and the gang who have had their own particular struggles despite returning a huge core. Onward 'Cats!

It was a momentum killer that's for sure.

Re: UNH Wildcats 2014/2015 - Wait 'Til Next Year!!!

That said, I'm in the minority that would like to see them revert the corners back and maintain a full sized Olympic.

I'm with you in what I actually think is the "silent majority" (to borrow an outdated phrase from WAY back). I've always thought the whole ice size argument was a convenient excuse (for some) for the program's post-season failings. I see no reason to change, and what's more important, I see NO desire by the school to change. That money is far better spent elsewhere.

Now that we're ten games into the season, I figured it might be a good time to pull up some of my preseason projections to see how things are playing out so far, in comparison to the preseason outlooks ...

--------------------

* In goal ... will Coach Umile split time initially between Clark and Regan? Or will one of those two get most of the games (based on board feedback, the consensus seems to be that Clark will be the lead dog)? If the Clark/Regan combo turns out OK, will Coach Umile leave Tirone in juniors until next season? If the early season combo falters ... is Tirone good enough to take the top job?

* Goalie over/under: (EGOL) playing 0.5 games in goal for UNH this season. I'll take the under.

So far, it's been virtually 100% Clark, and he seems to be holding up well. But the Tirone question is still looming in the background, and it will be interesting to see how that plays out. With Regan's lack of playing time, I'll guess Tirone arrives at the break.

* On defense ... it would seem highly likely that Pesce, Cleland and Maller will be three of the four defensemen who will feature in the top two pairings this season. If that proves to be true ... who will emerge as the 4th player in the top two pairings by midseason? Or will Coach Umile spread his top three d-men with one apiece leading the 3 pairings? If so - who plays with Pesce, who plays on Maller's pairing and who plays on Cleland's pairing??

* Defense over/under: UNH will allow 3.00 goals per game this season. I'll take the over (and hope I'm wrong).

Allowing for some understandable growing pains and lack of consistency, UNH is currently allowing 2.90 GPG. Carving 8 goals out of the Lowell road game, that number could (should) be closer to 2.50. For me, this is the best surprise of the season so far. Marks, Boyd and Furgele seem to be the three favored frosh defensemen (when healthy), while Quast and Randall are not surprisingly the depth guys while Chanter has only gotten into a single game. I can't comment on the pairings 'cuz I've seen too little live action.

* Up front ... who skates on the top line, and who are the centers on all four lines? Where will the goals come from? Which of the frosh will break out early in the season, which will gradually emerge as the season plays out, and which won't get off the start line? Which of the low profile returning players will enjoy their own "breakout" season and start raining goals after a slow start to their UNH careers?

* Offense over/under: UNH will score 3.00 goals per game this season. I'll take the under. If they can get the over, it at least should be a fun and exciting season.

So far, the 'Cats are also scoring 2.90 GPG so while they're under, they seem to be improving, and with the young forward corps still coming to grips with adapting to the D-1 level, there is every reason to believe they may top out over 3.00 by season's end. Goals are pretty well-balanced across the lines, but it doesn't look like there's going to be a 20 goal guy (or maybe not even a 15 goal player) by the end of the season at this rate. Poturalski is the frosh who looks to have gotten out of the blocks early, while Correale, Gaudreault and MacDonald seem to be thriving with more prominent roles this season. McNicholas and Salvaggio are the slow-starting frosh, while Bourque and Hill are not surprisingly at the bottom of the depth chart for returning players up front. Still waiting for the Yzerman genes to kick in, and I suspect Foegele will break out once he scores his first goal. Those two will be keys for how this year's team develops.

Team outlook: UNH will finish in 7th place this coming regular season. I see a slow (start), but hopefully with a tough NC early schedule out of the way by 2015, the team will finish stronger, and could be an interesting outlook for the postseason. I don't see a return trip to the Garden OR to the NCAA's, but hopefully we'll be back to both in 2016.

Team over/under: 5.5 wins before Winter break (ties don't count as even a half-win). I'll take the under.
Team over/under: 6.5th place in the HE regular season, and 0.5 postseason wins.

With seven games left before the break, UNH seems on course to do better than I'd projected. But before getting too giddy about it, they've just lost a game to a previously winless opponent, and will be playing 4 of those 7 games against two very talented teams who have underachieved to date (PC and BC). The RPI game is winnable, but that's arguably the pre-Thanksgiving Day ECAC bugaboo UNH always seems to find a way to lose. The UMaine series is completely winnable, so cue a split. I'll predict a 6-10-1 record at the break, with UNH finding a tie somewhere in the four games with PC and BC, beating RPI  and splitting with struggling UMaine.

Unfortunately for the short run, I see no reason - yet - for any post-season optimism. I see UNH finishing ahead of NU, UMass Amherst, UConn and UMaine, and vying for the middle of the pack slots between 6th and 8th place with chronically-overrated Notre Dame and with Merrimack, neither of whom has exactly "run the gauntlet" despite softer-than-a-sneaker-full-of ... spit* schedules to date. I'll stick with my 7th place regular season prediction, with an early postseason exit to follow. Anything better, to me, is a happy bonus. :)

Re: UNH Wildcats 2014/2015 - Wait 'Til Next Year!!!

Not to drag this out much longer, but I feel a counterpoint is in order here ...

* In JeRome Wilkins' case, there seems to have been agreement there was a sexual encounter, but there was a huge question about whether the act was consensual. We've seen this many times before, and for obvious reasons, it's not a bad idea to withhold judgment until all of the facts come out.

* With our esteemed goalie-on-leave (or EGOL; trying to be nice), there will be witnesses and evidence that support the female victim being “thrown to the ground, jumped on top of, and repeatedly punched and spat upon.” Afterwards, our EGOL “appeared intoxicated when police arrived, and resisted arrest after being taken to Wentworth-Douglass Hospital." The police also found physical evidence on the victim’s body. Even reading this evidence in the most favorable manner to the EGOL - you know, the police making up stories, and the throwing and jumping bits *just* being good ol' collegiate *enthusiasm* - I daresay it's safe to assume the female victim did NOT consent to being punched and/or spat upon. Which is cretinous enough by my standards to kick EGOL out of the program.

If this offends some PC sensibilities out there, then so be it. I'm sure the EGOL's family is devastated by this turn of events, and I do have some sympathy for their situation. This clearly wasn't part of their plan. But if you are a parent of the female victim, what would your reaction be to the whole situation? Are you gonna give EGOL the benefit of the doubt? Just "kids being kids" (though EGOL is 23 years old and very much an adult)?? A D-1 male athlete physically accosting a female AND law enforcement on the same evening is not anywhere near the top of my list of those deserving of sympathy, or of the "benefit of the doubt".

I'll continue this further IF engaged on it, but I've said my piece. From now on it will be EGOL instead of "assailant".
Bold 1 - Agreed, obviously I can't help myself.
Bold 2 - Casey's lawyer will challenge the prosecution and present evidence as well.
Bold 3 - We've not heard any evidence. We have read some newspaper stories.
Bold 4 - Yes. "This isn't Russia. Is this Russia? This isn't Russia." - Ty Webb.

We lost to Minnesota in Buffalo who also play on an Olympic sheet. May have been different if we had had Lanny Gare for that game. Sheet size didn't stop the Gophers from winning two national titles in a row though. Lost to Denver in Amherst which iirc is an Olympic sheet too.
Also think it benefits the women's program, who seem to be forgotten in the discussion of changing the rink specs.

Aw thanks! And I don't mean to sound negative which isn't really my style. You were right; it was a cool place to watch a game...vintage hockey barn and loved the old Boston Garden feel! We sat below the student section in box seats so that made it even more fun haha.

Call 'em as you see 'em, right? Good thing NU won else with those seats you'd have needed a post game shower.

Re: UNH Wildcats 2014/2015 - Wait 'Til Next Year!!!

To follow up on Chuck's section on D pairings in his preseason vs 10 games in comparison, based on box scores, Maller and Pesce have been the first pairing for 7 games (with Boyd replacing Maller for two and Quast replacing Maller for one). Cleland and Marks have been the second pairing for 7 games (with Maller eplacing Marks for two and Maller replacing Cleland for one). Both Boyd and Furgele have been on the third pair 6 games, but only twice together there.

Regarding the Wildcats PP: they are now 3 for 33, or 9.09%, which is good for 50th of 59 Div 1 teams. Obviously, PP is not the be all - end all stat, as Bentley leads Div 1 with 14 for 44, or 36.36%, which is good for 1st in Div 1, but the Falcons are only 5-5-1. Nevertheless, I think that special teams are important, especially in close games.

And, finally, BS35+1, we want a jumbotron, and we want it now! The blackened score clock through the first period was an an utter embarrassment, and would have been for any high school venue, as well. Moreover, it seems to me that any losing team could use such an infrastructure failure for an official protest.
Marty can't put on an expense report and it is even more unlikely with the pending composition of the State House of Reps. UNH will be fighting for snow plowing funds if O'Brien is elected Speaker.

I see one of your Bentley boys had a hattie last night? Sounds like they are a decent, solid team! Good luck to them as the season wears on...
