Re: UNH Wildcats 2013-14 Season Thread

Union has been an upper level squad for the last five or six years under Leaman and Bennett...pretty good squad up there

Re: UNH Wildcats 2013-14 Season Thread

Watching the game Fri at the Whit there was one hard hit in TVR that he had a hard time getting up from but that's not the first game I've seen him get decked of course... Goumas took a few hard hits in that game as one would expect. Yep they were physical...TVR's prognosis is yet to be announced but couldn't help but think in slow mo looked very remincient of a Stamkos injury. Here's hoping I'm wrong!

Ya I remember that hit on him friday. He got up slow enough to worry me. Like you I hope he's ok too.

Ha good point! Sad testimony to our board situation which I suppose is the least of our issues! Is there a tron at the Alfond? Just bought a ticket up there. Pricey! Not sure if I'll wear my UNH jersey :)

Yes they do but you have to sit low enough to see it or not near one of the awkward celing lines. The building is just weird. Maine is cheaper than Merrimack. Those tickets are price gouging. Wear your jersey. I've worn mine there for the past 10 years and I'm not the quietest fan. Nothing I haven't seen at other rinks.

Boys worked hard last night; was a fast paced game thanks for these clips! Here's hoping TVR and Downing are going to be ok but sure doesn't look good from the clips...

Maine; not good on the road, tough to beat at the Alfond. Someone in the know, what's the skinny on the loss as per the pairwise and is it up to winning the Hockey East to make the Regionals...or, too early to make that kind of prediction? Man, what a volatile sport! Love it. :p Going to make the road trip to Black Bear country me thinks...

PWR now down to 22nd, seven slots out of an at-large bid. Pretty much need to sweep Maine, I think, to save PWR. Otherwise, it probably will require auto-seed by winning Hockey East at the Garden. Various PWR predictors usually turn up with around 6-8 games remaining in regular season, so after Maine home and home next weekend. Too bad that SOS is not worth something. I still think that we need an easier OOC schedule.

Thanks for the update seems we gave been pushing uphill the entire season...well anythings possible says the optimist in me! Go 'Cats!

You are assuming, of course, that they win more games if the schedule is easier. When you lose to Harvard at home, you can lose to anybody. The SOS is the only reason they are as high as they are, and the OOC provides the benefit to us of seeing high end teams at the Whitt. Perhaps you listened in on the Maine thread off season, lots of *****ing about the lousy home schedule. I would join in that type of complaining if we saw mostly AHA and non-conference HE games at the Whitt. I'm inclined to believe, as the coaches will try to sell us, that the payoff comes in the NCAA's, where in fact UNH has relatively good success in the first round. With a little talent, they may some day win a second round game. ;)

Looking at the rest of the schedule - IMO - they ought to win seven or more. [we know how that worked out last year] If they do that, they will probably be back above the cut line headed into HE playoffs. Might even be in the top four. After BC, nobody else is going to have a great in-conference record. Home ice, a visit to the garden, a regional appearance. What we all want? No. A "nice" season for our under-powered Cats? Yes :o

Re: UNH Wildcats 2013-14 Season Thread

And it's not only just the hitting part of the game ... too often, I see defensemen backing off very makeable plays at the point and playing it safe to prevent getting caught behind an odd-man rush. This is not a "this year" thing ... it's not even a "recent years" thing (i.e. Tortorella) ... I'm not even saying its a Coach Umile thing, but it seems to have been a constant theme for a long time, and I wish they'd be a little more aggressive thinking on the makeable plays. Especially earlier in the game. Last night, the defensemen seemed to be doing it (and doing it rather well) in the latter stages of the game, and of course that's understandable, given the game situation and all. It just seems to me there is a lot (too much?) of "erring on the side of caution" going on, and while I understand the risk is to be too reckless, and giving up too many chances ... the upside is to set a more positive tone in the attacking zone, especially with the current limitations of the talent level up front.

You're probably not going to see the UNH D pinching unless the score dictates. You run the risk of giving up odd-man rushes. TVR was pinching after UNH was down 3-0 maybe even down 2-0. Also the coaches won't give all the D the green light no matter what the situation. TVR and Knodel would get the green light, maybe Pesce with his skill too. Now with TVR doubtful you've lost a big offensive threat!!

Re: UNH Wildcats 2013-14 Season Thread

TVR out for eight weeks, Downing for four? Could be tough winning out now. But, opportunity for the sophomores and frosh to step up.

Snively...is this fact? I asked a Concord Monitor writer he had no idea but said they (UNH) typically hold pressers on Wednesday...if true then you bet someone has to step up...big time

I heard broken ankle for TVR and separated shoulder for Downing from my season-ticket holder cousin, but nothing more beyond that. I really hope that he is wrong on this one. I plan to be at next three home games, as I missed the past two weeks in New Zealand.

I took my daughter to "skate with the Cats" today and I heard from those close to the team that TVR's ankle is very bad and one person phrased it as "he is done". The Downing injury is definitely less clear although we do know it is a shoulder. It certainly sounds like he will be out for a period of time but that seems to be more vague at this point. All in all, a bad blow for a team that did not need one right now. Let's hope someone can pick up the slack but it will be a tall task.

Soo unfortunate just the news we didn't want to hear especially now! :( Tall task indeed...****.

Re: UNH Wildcats 2013-14 Season Thread

So with TVR out for the duration I wonder how this will affect his plans for next year. Will he stay or will he go? Who knows!

Re: UNH Wildcats 2013-14 Season Thread

Has he been drafted?

Nope but he would have been a prime prospect for a team to grab seeing that he is one of the top defenseman in the country. If I had to guess (only a guess), I would think he would use his senior year to get back his game then try to go pro after hopefully a successful senior year. That said, someone like Pesce may see that injury and say that I better go before something like that perhaps happens to me seeing he is a pretty high draft pick.

I am thinking that we will go back to the same scenario that we saw early in the year with Quast getting some playing time. The good news is that Maller is there to help and he has looked quite good for a Frosh. The Downing injury is also real tough for a team that is struggling to score. Hopefully we get good news on him and he returns sooner than expected.

Although the season has been somewhat disappointing thus far, it is not a lack of effort. Perhaps a lack of execution and ZERO breaks but I see the effort night in and night out so I certainly have to give them that. Here's hoping that their effort can somehow be rewarded with some good breaks down the road.
