Re: UNH Wildcats 2013-14 Season Thread

Although the season has been somewhat disappointing thus far, it is not a lack of effort. Perhaps a lack of execution and ZERO breaks but I see the effort night in and night out so I certainly have to give them that. Here's hoping that their effort can somehow be rewarded with some good breaks down the road.[/QUOTE]

Well I am the sentimental type mind you and agree 100% on that! "Puck luck" hasn't been something that the 'Cats have had a lot of, if it exists! This is devastating but can also serve as a catalyst...who will step up...there's great leadership with Agosta, Knodel..Maller is coming along. All of the boys need our utmost support and it will be a testament to this team to see what they can put together. We're behind you 'Cats, 100%! See you at the 'Whit Friday and the Alfond Saturday, and I WILL wear my UNH jersey 'up there' quite proudly! :D Wishing both boys the best..

Re: UNH Wildcats 2013-14 Season Thread

Nope but he would have been a prime prospect for a team to grab seeing that he is one of the top defenseman in the country. If I had to guess (only a guess), I would think he would use his senior year to get back his game then try to go pro after hopefully a successful senior year. That said, someone like Pesce may see that injury and say that I better go before something like that perhaps happens to me seeing he is a pretty high draft pick.

It will be interesting to see how this plays out over the next few months. The timing probably couldn't be worse for the player OR the team. TvR was arguably shaping up as a prime undrafted free agent for someone to sign late in the NHL season - similar to two guys in a similar position this time last year (Danny DeKeyser/WMU/Red Wings amd Torey Krug/MSU/Bruins) who left school after their junior years, and went on to make a significant positive impact with their new NHL teams in the playoffs. It's obviously too late in the season for a medical redshirt, and the injury comes too late for any chance of a return for the end of the college season. Even if we were to assume a team that might be interested in signing him was going into the NHL playoffs, and had room to play him (keeping in mind both DeKeyser and Krug were aided by injuries to other players to get their initial breaks, and otherwise were most likely ticketed for AHL/Calder Cup assignments) ... with the apparent weight-bearing nature of the injury, any shot at rehabbing in time to get back into the mix is pretty much shot now as well. Teams would likewise have reservations until they seem him play again.

So if we're looking for silver linings (at least from a UNH perspective, if not from TvR's perspective), then there's a pretty good chance TvR might be back in Durham next season. Get back up to speed, prove himself to be fit, another year of growth and physical maturity should help him land a pretty good FA deal at that point - he'll certainly have more leverage as a healthy player to dictate good terms, unless someone is willing to take a risk on him this offseason, and pay him as if the injury never happened. Maybe with the "genes" a GM may be out there willing to take that chance. Personally I wouldn't mind seeing him develop in Detroit with DeKeyser ... but under the category of wanting my cake and eating it too, I'm hoping that happens in April 2015. :) :)

I doubt this will have a big impact on Pesce, for what it's worth. Personally, from what I've seen, he's not quite ready anyway, and he's still only 19 yrs. old so I doubt the parent club (Carolina) is going to be in a big hurry to push a 3rd round draft pick whose confidence probably took a jolt when he got cut from the WJC team a few weeks ago. Carolina doesn't look terribly deep on the blue line (they do have one of my favorite former UML'ers, Ron Hainsey) so he should project out to have a shot at being on the 3rd pairing in a few years and *maybe* having an upside as a 2nd pairing player someday, tops.

I thought I saw some discussion recently about whether Justin Agosta has remaining eligibility to return for next season?

I'd have said at the beginning of this season that there was a good chance UNH would be losing at least 3 of their top 4 defensemen at the end of this season, with Pesce possibly making it 4 out of 4. Now, there's a realistic chance at least 2 of those guys might be back, and an outside chance 3 will be back next Fall (all but Knodel - perhaps including Agosta?).

In the short run ... making the USCHO consensus preseason goals of home ice for the HE tourney, a trip to Boston for the HE Quarters, and making a return to the NCAA's all just took a nasty hit on Saturday night. Coach Umile is going to have to play the "underdog" card now, hope he can get an emotional bounce from his players, and lean VERY heavily on Knodel, Pesce and Agosta while the three young defensemen undergo "trial by fire" over the balance of the season. Don't look now ... but UNH may be a single injury/suspension away from a Ryan Randall sighting. Short of pulling back a Silengo, Camper or MacDonald, that how thin the blue line crew looks now.

Thanks for the voice of reason Chuck! I just read that Jeff Wyer is also injured (knee) and will be out 3 weeks. When it rains..it pours!

Re: UNH Wildcats 2013-14 Season Thread

With the possibility of TVR coming back for his senior year, I was thinking how cool it would be to have his younger bro BVR playing on the same team, like the Carey brothers at St Lawrence. But, now I see that BVR will not arrive until 2016 or 2017. By the time BVR might be playing in the NHL, older bro JVR may be close to retirement? Anyway, I think that it is really neat that all three of them chose UNH.

Krug actually left Michigan State in the spring of 2012 and played a couple games with the B's. He was in the AHL pretty much all of last year until that call up in the playoffs that really worked out well for him and the B's.

Re: UNH Wildcats 2013-14 Season Thread

Injury details from Al Pike of Fosters:
TvR - Fractured ankle; out 6 weeks.
Grayson Downing - Sprained shoulder; out for up to 1 month.
Jeff Wyer - Knee injury; out approximately 3 weeks.

Kinda like UNH's modern-day version of UMaine's Kariya brothers (Paul/Steve/Martin), not so long ago. None of their careers overlapped either, although I think if Paul stuck around longer (as with JvR/Trevor), he could have shared a year with Steve. Steve's last game at UMaine was out in Anaheim (I have some vague foggy memories of that one  ;) ) and Martin arrived the next Fall, which appears to likely be how the Trevor/Brendan transition may now play out in 2015.

Honest question:

Can't Knodel come back if he and the coaches both want it?

He didn't play any games as a freshman in 2010-2011 (like Agosta). So based on the 4 years of eligibilty in 5 years wouldn't he still have a year left? Or is there some sort of NCAA paperwork thingy that needed to have been completed.

Nearly positive the answer is "yes."

Re: UNH Wildcats 2013-14 Season Thread

More details on Trevor van Riemsdyk provided by Allen Lessel in the Union Leader:

"It could be four to six weeks, hopefully not longer," Umile said. "We just don't know. It could be four weeks."

"The other night the guys did a great job on defense," he said. "But now they can't just do it for half a game. They have to do it until he gets back. The good thing is Harry (Quast) played the first half. Maller has gotten his feet wet and played well and now they've all got to do a little extra to make up for the loss of Trevor."

Interesting D-men analogies, Chuck.

Here are the data that support your points. Although TVR is more similar in size to DeKeyser, he is on a much higher scoring pace, very similar to Krug's in points per game. But, the D-man that I really like is junior Steve Weinstein at Bentley, who like TVR spends less time in the penalty box and more time on the ice than Krug and DeKeyser did. Weinstein is fast, can move the puck up ice, and he can pass, like TVR; wish that Bentley might get a visit to Lake Whitt next year so that Weinstein would have a chance to play on the big sheet. How did Mat Bodi look this past weekend on the big sheet; he is the other of the top 3 scoring D-men in Div 1 so far this season.

Greg, let me know if you don't have a buyer for these; I'd take one of them if not both...

Obviously I want to sell the pair. Are you going to the game tomorrow nite? We're in section 105 row 4, on the blue line.
Yes! Section 101 row E. can't blame you for wanting to move both of them. I'm going to see if I can find someone to go Sat (am going to Fridays game). I have an extra ticket for that game as normally my husband goes but he has stuff to do..

Re: UNH Wildcats 2013-14 Season Thread

Mostly just a bump on this rivalry weekend, but also looking for a little expectation raising help against a woeful road team.

Go 'cats, beat Maine!

Re: UNH Wildcats 2013-14 Season Thread

It is a sell out! Student section filled almost full hour before game time!! Lake Whitt has the vibe not seen in years.
