Re: UNH Wildcats 2013-14 Season Thread

So, sounds like for this game, at least, the box score and SOG pretty much tell the game story. Would be great to pick up another point or two tonight. Who will be in PC net? Go Cats!

Just read in the Providence Journal online that it won't be Gillies but no word on who would be the replacement. Game is sold out and it should be a wild one. PC coach a class act on his press conference; gave UNH alot of credit; his boys will be fired up tonight! Go 'Cats!

Re: UNH Wildcats 2013-14 Season Thread

Got the chance to attend last night's game.. First in a while.. UNH looked very good if not completely dominatant in the first. Good speed, clean passing, Controlled the boards in the offensive zone and made it look easy. Guys had plenty of space to shoot as well. Funny how that happens when your forwards are moving their feet. PC picked it up through the 2nd and 3rd though. Nice to see Willows with a gwg and UNH on the right side of that one. Played to well to not earn 2 points.

First place.. seemed like a pipe dream 2 weeks ago!

Hope to see some carry over from the OT win tonight.. .GO CATS!!

Re: UNH Wildcats 2013-14 Season Thread

Wow I feel like I am back in middle school. I didn't see this many backhandeded remarks and indirect insults in my senior core in high school. I thought an online forum with adults wouldn't be an exclusive club where it turns into an all on one right when someone has a different opinion than an established member.

I was going to talk about how shot quality is perceived and no one team has "better" chances than another team over the course of a season. If you look at team shooting percentages over the last 2 full seasons (2010-11,2011-12) see how teams vary so much in their shooting percentages even though their team system is the same and the players are almost all the same.

I joined this forum because I really enjoyed a few posters that had a lot of really valuable insight (CHC in particular and Josh Cioccio on the old posts I read) But I can tell that's not really what this forum is. Its more of a club for the longtime posters. I tried to bring a different perspective to this board. I talk about possession and want to see what other posters think and instead I get a backhanded poll on why shots on goal aren't important. I thought it would be fun to post and see what everyone else on the board says but its not worth it for me at least.

CHC this is my last post so I would like to say that I really appreciate all the work you do to get information about all the recruits. Keep up the good work.

There are a lot of crazy's on the board but there's always room for a "Crazed".;)

10. Without SOG we couldn't figure a goalie's save percentage!

9. FGIP's would have nothing to cheer about without SOG unless of course said SOG
go in!!

8. SOG “Describe a game”!

7. It keeps roaming bands of rabid, unemployed statisticians off the streets[/B]

6. SOG relevance discussions keep otherwise imbecilic UMO fan trolls preoccupied. :D

Ellis is the only other goalie on scholarship at PC...his backup is a club kid that is getting cut at semester break as they brought in another goalie at semester break

Not to kick the proverbial dead horse here ... but last night was at least the 9th straight game between these two teams in which the team that won the game did NOT outshoot their opponent. I could not locate the box scores for the 2010/2011 season, but it holds true last night, all last season (the tie game excluded for obvious reasons) AND in all three games in 2011/2012, too. Admittedly that's pretty weird, but hardly something that supports the supposed relevance/importance of SOG stats.

And once again ... the team that won was the one that held an early lead, carrying it through most of the game. :) Yeah, they almost gacked it up, but bottom line is they found a way to win, which is a good quality for a team to have. Some might even say it's the best quality a team can possibly have. Long may that continue.

Hope Gillies is OK and back in action ... next weekend. :D He really should go easy at this early stage of the season. He's going to be a huge factor in how far PC advances when the important games arrive come March, and I'd guess that a smart guy like Coach Leaman is not going to push the issue with him if he is in any way questionable tonight.

As far as I'm concerned, UNH is playing with house money tonight, but I'd like to see them continue to string together good performances, build some confidence/momentum, and keep themselves well-positioned for one of the HE home ice QF berths as the 2014 schedule looms. This team needs to make it to the TD Garden, no if's and's or but's. :)

Re: UNH Wildcats 2013-14 Season Thread

And I would like to announce my retirement from this thread. Something about staying off of Scott's lawn. My WIS-PC badge is in the mail.

;)

Wow ... another "exclusive club" bites the dust. This "quitting" craze seems to be gaining traction. Bummer. :(

Oh Jon, please don't leave. Your contributions to this post have always been totally irreverent. :p

Chcuk, your bullying has to stop.

Chuck was not bullying. The other person, Crazed, was fully engaged in the posts until he decided to retreat due to lack of a credible defense. Most people on this thread have agreed that SOG is not indicative of who wins. Crazed kept pushing his agenda and then seemingly bailed. Oh well...

You're kidding, right? You mean my recent comments to ... Jon??

If it's the other stuff, then I think scoreboard has summarized that all pretty fairly.

Jon come back soon ... all is forgiven I didn't mean to be such a meanie ... :D

Chuck, I didn't take DC's comments as pertaining towards Jon. Since I think most people realize that Jon (a PC fan) regularly posts on other teams threads with humor and credibility. Good poster.

Re: UNH Wildcats 2013-14 Season Thread

I am not convinced that a 2 SOG differential means all that much, regardless who won. I just know that when I am in attendance at a game, it drives me crazy when I watch my team dink around with the puck on the perimeter, thinking that they have the skill set to cycle like the pros, getting too cutesy with the puck, looking for the perfect shot, until they cough it up for an odd man rush in the other direction: "just shoot the puck!" And, I am not the only one who yells that. Ditto for face offs in the offensive zone: you need to win at least half of them. SOG and FOW may not always correlate with wins, but they are telling about how a team is playing, in my opinion.

Re: UNH Wildcats 2013-14 Season Thread

Leading by 2 goals at the start of the 3rd period, you'd expect to see Providence go into their 1-2-2 neutral zone trap and shut the Wildcats down. Instead, UNH had little difficulty working the puck through the neutral zone, maintained puck possession in the PC zone for long stretches, and outshot them 13-6, some of the quality variety. Solid weekend performance and a well-earned split.

But, more important, Chuck's winning streak continues, as UNH outshoots PC 34-26.

HOLY MACKEREL!! Of course I was kidding! I figured that in the context of Richie Incognito, the Rutgers whiner, etc., that people would realize I was joking. Oh well.

Thanks for clarifying. Sometimes sarcasm gets lost in translation out in cyberspace.

Re: UNH Wildcats 2013-14 Season Thread

So the only reason I wasn't here yesterday was that I'm a tremendously poor loser. Oh, and I didn't see either game so there was that.

Scott and Chuck ARE terrifying however... ;)

Re: UNH Wildcats 2013-14 Season Thread

I think that a true sign of a great team thread is having interlopers such as Jon and Nick contributing. What would we have without Nick reminding us constantly what is missing from our trophy case?

Re: UNH Wildcats 2013-14 Season Thread

Congrats to the UNH Football team for a great win over Maine and for making the playoffs for the 10th straight year. What an achievement!
Congrats also to the UNH Volleyball team for winning the America East Championship!
