Re: UNH Wildcats 2013-14 Season Thread

How about if your coach is pushing 70 and has never won a title in 30 years, what is the predictive value that he will eventually win one if he sticks around until he drops? ;)

According to *some* ... if said team generates enough SOG's, then eventually "puck luck" will kick in and get Coach and his unnamed program over the finish line ... but the actuarial tables tell us he'll have about 12.8 years to "beat the clock", so to speak ... :D

Whittemore is now the Peter T. Paul School College of Business and Economics. Having gone to Whittemore, I always reference having graduated from WSBE/PTP in things like bios, resumes, LinkedIn, etc.

Thanks for the clarification. Paul must have given more money to the school than Whittemore so his name trumps:D

Anyway, UNH SOG again greater than the opposition to the tune of 39-22 and another "W". What's up with that:confused::eek: Could this be some kind of Fibonacci:confused:

155:42 of shut-out hockey for DeSmith. A shut-out tomorrow and he'd snap his own program-record, of 203:32, set last year...

$25MM, with substantial matching through his challenge, will get that done. If you havent seen the Paul College, it's worth a quick trip on the way from Libby's to Lake Whitt. In fact, the communications school just had a similar donation happen. Good stuff!!

4 in a row, would love to make it 5 tonight. All this SOG talk lately has had me nerding out to things like Fenwick and Corsi. Does anyone (Chuck??) have a POV on predictive stats? I can see why SOG might be meaningless in a one-game context, but over the course of the season, I have to imagine it's a proxy for quality chances and goals.

Anyhoo... DeSmith or Wyer tonight?

I like the idea of alternating two goalies.

Re: UNH Wildcats 2013-14 Season Thread

I would like to see Desmith start tonight. I think that Desmith earned his start based off of last night's shutout of one of the highest scoring teams in the nation. Desmith gives us our best chance to win right now and as we saw last year he only gets this hot once or twice a year. We need to take advantage of it while it lasts. Wyer should start the Tuesday game against Harvard on the 26th to give Desmith a break and as long as Desmith is playing well he should play the 3 games until then. We need wins and right now and I don't think that Wyer gives us the same chance that Desmith does. 155 minutes of shutout hockey speaks for itself. I'm intrigued to see what happens tonight.

I think I'm in this camp

Shutout streak for DeSmith ends at 198:15 on a PP goal for Northeastern (5:17 short of his career mark). First goal allowed by DeSmith on 98 shots. I've never understood the lack of faith in DeSmith. I think people who want to compare him to Conklin/Regan/Ayers will always be disappointed. He's not flashy and he won't steal a lot of games, but he's consistently steady and solid, giving UNH a good chance to win most nights. He'll have some tough stretches - what goalie doesn't??

He's simply the better goalie of the two and should be on the ice more often than not. Its clear Umile wants to get Wyer more ice time this season - I think opportunities like Brown, etc are perfect chances. However, DeSmith should be in net for most/all of the HE games down the stretch...

Re: UNH Wildcats 2013-14 Season Thread

Good to see the 'Cats right the ship with five wins over the last week-plus. This may be the easiest stretch of games they'll play all season, and it's good to see them take care of games they should expect to win. Some much-improved defensive play AND good scoring distribution has been encouraging. And some stability in goal, with a return to form from DeSmith, while Wyer notched a non-conference win in midweek (suspect he'll get another chance to do the same vs. Harvard mid-week after next).

It was a stretch where at least four wins were needed, and it will be interesting to see if they can parlay this recent streak into improved results against their next two HE opponents. Next weekend in Providence, and then the weekend after Thanksgiving home and home against BC should really give us the first true glimpse of how the team stacks up against the other top teams in the league. Obviously the UMass-Lowell weekend did not go well, and I'm sure Providence will bring many of the same challenges Lowell provided, as well as the challenges they brought in their six-game series against UNH last season. More on that later ... BC of course is BC, and you would like to think playing them twice at this point of the season offers the realistic chance of a split. But with the three non-conference games in between on Thanksgiving week ... IF UNH can split their two HE series, and win at least two out of three from Harvard and CC, then they get to the midseason break above .500 overall, and in contention for HE home ice.

Then all they have to do is have a better 2014 than 2013. The jury is still out, but at least things are pointed back in a positive direction.

With Providence up next, it's probably a good time to revisit the issue of SOG relevance. :) Last season, the Friars were a constant thorn in UNH's side, both in regular season AND post-season play, with PC bringing a halt to the early season run the 'Cats simply could not continue into the 2013 portion of their HE schedule. Providence was 2-0-1 against UNH in the HE regular season, and took their HE quarterfinals match-up 2 games to 1 at Schneider Arena. So ... does anyone want to take a guess at how many times the Friars outshot the 'Cats last season in their 6 game series?

Enjoy the rest of the weekend everyone, and GO UNH!!! :) :)

Re: UNH Wildcats 2013-14 Season Thread

Bring on Providence! Of course I cannot even begin to talk the SOG relevance with you hockey aficionados and have great respect for your knowledge! (You are teaching me, the newbie hockey fan) Chuck you are so right about the Friars having our 'number' last season. The team is playing very well and I guess the big question is...how do you solve a problem like Jon Gilles? Go 'Cats!

Re: UNH Wildcats 2013-14 Season Thread

Any word about the NU coach/staff going into the stands after a student last night?
