UNH WildcatS 2012-'13: The Dawn of New Prominence

Re: UNH WildcatS 2012-'13: The Dawn of New Prominence

After the first UNH goal and total shot dominance .... the old, "Oh, this is going to be easy" attitude slipped in.

Re: UNH WildcatS 2012-'13: The Dawn of New Prominence

Tough one for the Wildcats last night. Lacked finish around the net while outshooting Vermont 38-20 and played lacklustre hockey in the third period. This was not a game they should have lost. Full marks to Vermont - they played hard and remained patient throughout with a shortened line-up. It doesn't get any easier for the Cats over the next few games and they will have to elevate their game play in all areas to compete against BC and Wisconsin.

Indeed a tough one to watch slip away. There were some bad turnovers (direct passes to the wrong team) and missed opportunities to put more pucks in the net. It seemed like what should have been an advantage (the big sheet) worked against them at times. Perhaps that mid- first period earthquake shook them off their game.

I personally thought the line combos in New York were a little tighter, but it is early.

Kudos to the number of girls playing with the communal stomach bug, but GET OVER IT!

On to Saturday!

It was a pretty gritty performance by Vermont. They have a lot of injuries and only have 4 D and 10 F and played 3 games in 5 days with the short bench. Have to give kudos to Coach Plumer for keeping his players focused and competitive. They looked tired at times but they kept fighting.

Certainly can not take the game away from Vermont. They found an answer to every UNH goal, and capitalized on our mistakes.

We must learn to be relentless!!!!!!!!!

Re: UNH WildcatS 2012-'13: The Dawn of New Prominence

I agree with the reviews of both teams play from last night but let's keep one thing in mind....when playing a team game, you learn to value every team members importance, and the Wildcats were missing an important team member last night that affected everyones play....I'm just saying....a team needs everyone to be at their best, hence the term

The key was Douville coming up with several key saves early in the third that kept the game from becoming a rout. UNH seemed to play tighter from that point on, while Vermont fed off the momentum.

Re: UNH WildcatS 2012-'13: The Dawn of New Prominence

Cats showed some spunk today!!! Down 3-1 they came up with a gutsy third period and had some urgency in their game. They played much better overall today especially in the first and third periods. They still have to manage the puck better and avoid turning it over in the neutral zone and 5-10 feet inside their own blue line. Some turnovers late in the first and in the second were costly but the team regrouped and pulled out a 4-3 win on a point shot from Crossley late in the game.

Congrats UNH!

Re: UNH WildcatS 2012-'13: The Dawn of New Prominence

A very nice win today, especially after Tuesdays game...tremendous grit and poise to come back after some mistakes...really took BC by surprise...now let's see what happens on the smaller ice....

Re: UNH WildcatS 2012-'13: The Dawn of New Prominence

Tomorrow will be tough on the small ice, and I imagine Boyles will play. I wonder if they underestimated UNH and figured they could get Miller some time in an "easy" game?

I think BC is still trying to figure out the identity of the Eagles #1 goaltender. Boyles isn't always lights out. She can be good, and she can be not as good. After last year, I'm sure UNH fans can relate.

With the size of the UNH team they should be good on a smaller ice surface as long as they play with spirit and speed. They gotta play those BC girls tough and take away their time and space on the forecheck and as soon as they enter the O-zone. As for the goaltending, who knows...just shoot and drive the net for second and third shots in traffic - again size helps here.

Re: UNH WildcatS 2012-'13: The Dawn of New Prominence

I think the best take away from this game was coming from behind and beating a "better" team. Good poise. Mistakes will happen, especially early on, it's how they react and regroup that will make this team grow. Great job 'Cats (this is DC on the HUX machine!)

Re: UNH WildcatS 2012-'13: The Dawn of New Prominence

The Wildcats came up short today against the Eagles. Too many costly turn-overs and a little weak on the puck. The team needs to generate more chances off the rush but right now are disjointed, settling for outside shots and not able to outnumber teams on the attack/entry. A couple late penealties didn't help and gave BC some momentum when it seemed UNH were starting to come on.

While the 'Cats certainly made some mistakes, the game was closer than the 4 - 2 (5 - 2 with the empty netter) might indicate. There were times when they dominated play, and generated good chances. Horn blew a shot past Boyles in the first that hit the post about as squarely as I've seen. That puck goes in, we've got a different game. In the second, a couple of very near misses on redirects that just skittered wide.

Defensively, they have some tightening up to do. They have to clear the bodies from in front and not allow multiple whacks at loose pucks.

They didn't back down in the third, but were plagued by consecutive penalties, and couldn't maintain momentum.

I think the take away from the weekend is that on Saturday, they all stuck to the game plan, moved the puck well, took away BC's time and space, and played smart, unselfish hockey. Not to say that they changed radically on Sunday, but they appeared to be a little fatigued, and when they got behind, instead of moving the puck quickly to create open spaces, they held on a fraction longer, and tried to do a little too much individually. All in all, though, I see a team that has the tools - they just need to trust the mechanics.

I was disappointed in a couple calls the officials made. In one instance Hitchcock was on the boards in the offensive zone on a prolonged UNH attack. BC's Jackie Young very blatantly cross checked her in the neck / jaw area. I mean, no ifs, ands, or buts about her intention, yet she gets just two minutes. What message are you sending there?

At the end of the second, Blake Bolden was defending against Jonna Curtis' breakout rush along the boards. Whether Curtis was completely facing the boards I can't say, but she sure as S*^$ wasn't facing Bolden when Bolden ran her into the boards. I thought that was a hit from behind that should have been called for the major. Bolden gets two for checking, Curtis gets 6 - 8 weeks in a sling. BC is skilled and fast enough to not have to play the goon game. Bad Eagles.

Nice review DC. I agree, UNH seems to be right in the thick of things and are not going to be push-overs. As this young team gets more exposure and experience along with confidence in one another and the system, they will have a good chance to win on a consistent basis. Big loss with Curtis gone - she has been playing well and is a great addition to the team. Wisconsin up next, geeez the schedule certainly doesn't get any easier for the girls!

Re: UNH WildcatS 2012-'13: The Dawn of New Prominence

That was a good Hockey East match up and I would agree that the game was probably closer than the final score. BC has some great skill and their transition game and neutral zone speed is fun to watch. UNH seems improved and once they settle into 3 consistent lines they should start building some chemistry and consistency. The penalties you mentioned were really disappointing as they were unwarranted and almost seemed malicious. I was also surprised that the BC captain was only given a 2 minute minor. There is a difference between playing with passion and playing uncontrolled. As a fan of womens hockey, it seems we see more and more of this cheap play each year. These players work so hard to prepare for the season and though injuries are going to happen, its unfortunate when a player loses her opportunity because of an undisciplined play by another. I hope the UNH player has a speedy recovery. BC has a tremendous amount of skill and I know they take pride in fair play but those types of plays undermine the programs credibility. I do like how the refs appear to be letting the players play and are allowing incedental contact but when a player crosses the line like yesterday they need to send the right message. You don't want other players injured and left unchecked, these types of penalties can prove costly when things are on the line at then end of the year.

Alexis Crossley - Pro Ambitions Rookie of the Week!

Alexis Crossley - Pro Ambitions Rookie of the Week!

Crossley Honored by Hockey East as Pro Ambitions Rookie of the Week
WAKEFIELD, Mass. – Freshman defenseman Alexis Crossley (Cole Harbour, Nova Scotia) was tabbed as the Pro Ambitions Rookie of the Week as announced by Hockey East Monday afternoon.

Crossley played a vital role in the Wildcats' 4-3 victory over fourth-ranked Boston College Saturday as she tallied a pair of goals and an assist. The freshman got New Hampshire on the board in the first period with her second goal of the season at the 11:11 mark and assisted on the game-tying goal in the third period. Just over a minute later in the third, Crossley scored the game-winning goal on a power play, ultimately helping the 'Cats to a 4-3 victory.

Through five games, Crossley has a total of four points on three goals and an assist thus far and has notched 11 shots on goal from the blue line. Two of her three goals have been on power plays.

The Wildcats return to action Friday when they take on Wisconsin in the first of a two-game series. Friday's start time is slated for 8:00 p.m.
