UNH Wildcats - 2011 Playoff Quest

Re: UNH Wildcats - 2011 Playoff Quest

I have been a UNH hockey fan ever since the radio station I work at started broadcasting the games, but I forget what year it was. I have posted two links on the scores thread that allows internet users to tune to the games VT@UNH. GO WILDCATS!!!!!!!!!!!!

Thanks to zoofer for starting the regular season thread.
Now that UNH has gotten the monkey off their back - also known as the Regular Season Trophy () - they can focus on the Hockey East Tournament and, hopefully, the NCAA Regionals at Manchester.
Here's an analysis of various scenarios, prepared by Maine poster "Priceless", which would earn UNH a trip to the NCAA Tournament:

The first step is clear - beat UVM beginning Friday night at the Whitt.

Welcome

Enjoy the game, Joe. I just can't bring myself to say "Go Eagles.";) How about "May the best team win." That should cover it.

Re: UNH Wildcats - 2011 Playoff Quest

Solid playoff win for the Wildcats. Key performances:
~ Stevie Moses had 10 shots on goal - one while laying on his back in front of the crease.
~ Thompson-DeSimone-Sislo came to play - good hustle, back-checking, and fore-checking.
~ DiGirolamo made several key saves in the first period.
~ Moses-Borisenok-Goumas were buzzing around in the UVM zone all night.
~ A lot of blocked shots with the stick and sacrificing the body.

One down, another opportunity tomorrow night.

Re: UNH Wildcats - 2011 Playoff Quest

I thought that the Wildcats were sleep walking again through most of first two periods, but fortunately woke up in the third. Four shots in the first period had me thinking another Friday night disaster was in the making. But, DiGi played great all night long, his d-men took a lot of shots to the body, and UVM missed way too many open shots at the net. Hope that our Cats come out at the opening face off on Saturday night the way they played the third period on Friday night. Let's end this thing in two games!

Re: UNH Wildcats - 2011 Playoff Quest

Not too much to add, just glad to see the "W."
This is playoff hockey, and it's nice to have a solid goalkeeper.

Re: UNH Wildcats - 2011 Playoff Quest

Thank God for DiGiralamo.

And the Mo-Go-Bo lines was getting around of applause after each shift by the end of the game last night from the 2850 in attendance. Lots of hustle, and great to see Stevie get a goal- - he wanted it, bad (which sort of goes without saying).

Re: UNH Wildcats - 2011 Playoff Quest

sterlippo, I hope you also take in the women's team....I'm watching them beat up on Minnesota right now, leading 4-1 with 15 to go in the 3rd....Molly Schaus is phenominal...talk about making it look easy...i know Stack gets all the press but BC as a whole playing a great game....another BC team to hate now! :o)

I know the break games are usually harder draws but not even half full?

2,850 x $21 = $59,850
4,000 x $15 = $60,000 (+ more concessions sales)

I just hope they aren't trying to generate revenue with a 3rd game :p

Re: UNH Wildcats - 2011 Playoff Quest

Great to see Big Mac (aka - e.cat) after 40 years. He graduated from the same high school a year ahead of me. Helluva basketball player. Small world.

That had to be one of the most lop-sided 4-3 games I've seen in a while. UNH was firing on all cylinders and outshot UVM 39-28. If not for Madore's amazingly fast glove, the game would have been out of reach in the second period.

The seniors - Sislo, DeSimone, Thompson, Campanale, and Beck - left it all out on the ice in their last game at the Whittemore Center. Assuming Kessel moves on as well, his last home game was also hard-fought.

Last night, and especially tonight, the S-D-T line made a statement. They are one of the top-scoring lines in the East and they've come to the playoffs to play. If earning a trip to the Hockey East semifinals and NCAA regionals wasn't enough motivation for them, there is the added incentive of playing for their future. Recall that at the end of the playoffs last year, Bobby Butler received more than one offer to play professional hockey. His outstanding play throughout the playoffs and run at the Hobey Baker Award increased his value on the open market. An Amateur Tryout (ATO) contract is also on the horizon for the undrafted Mike Sislo and Paul Thompson. Similarly, Phil DeSimone will be looking to play for a Washington Capital affiliate (probably in the AHL) when his college season ends. They'll want to be playing at their peak during this period of maximum exposure to the professional scouts.

I think Stevie Moses has been making a statement over the last couple of months as well. He is setting himself up for a breakout scoring season in his senior year - much like Butler and Thompson did before him. The number of times he has generated shots on goal mostly through individual effort has been very impressive.

Unsung hero in the UVM series - Brett Kostolansky. He missed the Hockey East Playoffs his freshman year with a broken foot and when he returned for the NCAA Playoffs in Albany, he was a long way from 100%. Beginning on Friday night and continuing last night, he was skating and working his butt off. Whether it was controlling the puck in the defensive end or stepping up into the offensive flow, #15 came up big.

Two wins down. Another opportunity next Friday night at the TD Garden.
