UNH Wildcats 2010 off-season thread

Re: UNH Wildcats 2010 off-season thread

and did I miss the part where someone was called out, or just the mocking of UNH reg season title? But I guess that isn't trolling ;)

yes, you did miss it btw, i called out the nitwit who said York "endorses" cheap shot hockey

Well I did, then I wasn't talking about you, so no need to get all up in a huff and all defensive, and I would agree with you about York. So calm down, the trolling comment wasn't directed at you, and yes there are trolls out there!!!

Re: UNH Wildcats 2010 off-season thread

All trolling aside....I'm rooting for BC tonight, and if they win it, I will be happy for Hockey East, the BC team, and their fans...even the asinine ones. ;)

Ditto - at least it's Hockey East, and (this season) full of respectable players.

Still too much red in the final for my taste...

Clockwork Orange

Clockwork Orange

PEaves was a dirty little punk, but I can't imagine any coach endorsing his style of play, at least, not without it being more widespread. BC (like most teams) have had an occasional hack/goon, but it's never typical of their style of play.

As someone who has been a Detroit Red Wings fan for slightly longer than being a UNH fan ... I can honestly say I've never been as ambivalent about someone wearing the Winged Wheel as Patrick Eaves this year. And when that includes Todd Bertuzzi on this year's squad ... that's saying something.

Hard to believe that his brother Ben was just the opposite kind of player during his time at BC. And another BC guy who wore the Winged Wheel a decade or so earlier (Doug Brown) remains one of my all-time favorite DRW players of all time. So it's hard to broad-brush this issue BUT ...

... having said that, I do believe that over the last ten or so years, it's been my observation that BC players on average show a little less restraint in the vicinity of opposing goalies than players from any other HE program.

Does that make it Coach York's fault? Not directly ... but he IS the head coach, and if the bucks stops somewhere, I guess ultimately it's with him. He's really done an amazing job, considering where he picked up the program in the aftermath of the Cedorchuk situation (and let's not forget Mike Milbury walked away from that, such was the mess left behind) ... but there is not a shortage of people around HE with long memories about the Exter injury, and the way it was handled in some quarters by BC in the aftermath.

Can't say I'm rooting for either team tonight. BC has just taken a 1-0 lead, and I'm surprisingly not repulsed. The medication must be working. :p

Re: UNH Wildcats 2010 off-season thread

Well tcbg I actually contribute to a number of good causes, and was happy to donate to the Youth Hockey folks in Detroit. As I was to also donate to your Bowl 24 for the Travis Roy foundation!

And don't think you guilted me into it! So if a Maine guy can donate to team UNH, hopefully it will inspire a few more of your friends at UNH to do so in order for you to make your goal!
Thanks, Bob!

UNH fans, this is your last chance to help me raise money for the Travis Roy Foundation by sponsoring me in The 24 Bowl. Any small amount will help!

Donations should be in by 1:00 pm (event starts at 2:00). Thanks!

Re: UNH Wildcats 2010 off-season thread

Could have been yours, but your team couldn't stop a "crappy" UNH team from coming back in the penultimate game of the season.

reading this little orgasm over a tie can only make me think of this

"If it hadn't been for Dick Umile
UNH'd be national champs times 3
99, 02, and 03
every frozen four is a tragedy!

If it hadn't been for Dick Umile
UNH'd be national champs times 3
99, 02, and 03
we love getting blown out on tv!

He calls for a line change, whistlin like a bird
You probably think he sounds absurd,
but you can hear bobo shout with glee
"AS MANY LEAGUE TITLES AS PC!!"

If it hadn't been for Dick Umile
UNH'd be national champs times 3
99, 02, and 03
the fake banners hide our misery!

an empty trophy case is his only reward
for living by the choke, and dying by the sword
such is the legend of dick umile
but dont cry no tears, he once tied BC.

funny how nothing changes (atleast as it relates to unh chokes and the corresponding fan hissyfits)

anyhoo, congrats on the regular season trophy. but i think we'll stick with the ones we got. i'm just glad BC was able to pull itself off the mat in time to win its actual penultimate game of the season.

Man, you BC trolls have such low thresholds for your definitions of things like "orgasm" and "hissyfits". Points to a little over-sensitivity on your part. Of course, when you have such little self-confidence that you have to troll to make yourself feel better, I guess we have to expect that.

(BTW, when did UNH get blown out in the NCAA's in 99? Ah, don't let facts get in the way.)

All I'm saying is that you could have had another. BU did it, and they seemed pretty excited about it.

Re: UNH Wildcats 2010 off-season thread

BTW, another big THANK YOU to everyone who supported me in The 24 Bowl. With your help, I managed to reach my personal goal of $500 on one-time donations alone! Woot! (With per-pin donations, I pulled in over $600, as I bowled 260 over the two games.) At last tally, the fundraiser had brought in almost $20,000, with one of the teams promising to find a way to generate the final 4K to help them reach their goal.

Re: UNH Wildcats 2010 off-season thread

I feel the same way about his coach, and his coach's son Patrick. After watching Patrick speer Colin Hemingway in a corner at Lake Whitt out of view of the refs, I was not at all surprised when Patrick Eaves later ended the career of Joe Exter with a knee to the head. Typical Eagles tactic, no doubt endorsed by their coach. At least Patrick Eaves, Andrew Alberts, Brian Gionta and other BC "greats" were not awarded the Hobey (I was ok with Mike Mottau's Hobey in 2000, I think). The only irony for me is that this NC game is the same as in 2006, that is two coaches and teams that have no respect for sportsmanship are facing one another. Unfortunately, I can not root for either.

You are a fool and your program is a perennial failure. Have a nice day.

ps- Hemingway deserved the spear after the cheap shot he gave Ben Eaves immediately before Patrick got him.

Re: UNH Wildcats 2010 off-season thread

BU did it, and they seemed pretty excited about it.

They would. They get excited about winning the Piszpot in February and typically act like they won a national title. And of course, up to that point, they hadn't won much more than that in a long time except for one HE title in 2006 (even Malts usually needs two in a row to get REALLY excited :D ).

Probably not a good example. That's all I'm saying.

Anyway, it was fun seeing BC win another national title. Hope you guys can get one soon.

Wouldn't that be a blast? As much as I hate to say it, BC has too much 'street cred' amongst kids who want to play college hockey ( so does BU though). UNH is a tough sell, and it doesn't seem like its being sold to a few key recruits. A few kids who can score and a solid D corps and I think Umile can put together a squad to make a run for it. I believe that the 2008 squad was every bit as capable of BCs to make the run that year! Our boys in blue can do it again!

I was for BC this weekend. Too much nostalgia on my end having lived so close and been to the games when I was doing the Boston thing. They even gave us free admission once to the playoff game against PC!

Re: UNH Wildcats 2010 off-season thread

I was for BC this weekend.

Me too.

Once UNH is out I am for whatever Hockey East teams are left. If only to not listen to the WCHA fans...

BC is tough to root for; they have a certain number of fans that make it nearly impossible. Thankfully York is such a classy guy that he can make up for it. I just hope York is right in his belief that a rising tide lifts all boats, UNH only need a little more lift one of these years to get over the top.

This past year UNH squad wasn’t going to win it all, it was a flawed team, not enough depth. This is a year Umile got a team to overachieve, on paper coming into the year the NCAAs was a long shot at best. Umile should get credit for his coaching of these players (as much as he is getting hammered for the lack of top end talent coming in). Who saw Butler exploding like he did? We can only hope that maybe Paul Thompson is the next “UNH forward”, otherwise I wonder again where are the goals coming from.

Re: UNH Wildcats 2010 off-season thread

What's the word on the street/rinks about MiKe Vecchione, the UNH recruit from Malden Catholic (e.g., current skills; potential for development; why he chose UNH over any Boston school, etc.)?

Not sure who badly any of the Boston schools wanted him, but he is considered to lack the upside of Ryan Fitzgerald and Brendan Silk, both of whom UNH wanted but lost out to BC. However, he won a Mass HS player of the year award, and is considered to be a very hard worker and good student. He just finished his junior season at Malden Catholic and is expected to matriculate in the fall of 2012.

Re: UNH Wildcats 2010 off-season thread

Any early word on where Vecchione might play next yr?

I can't imagine that Silk, Fitzg or Vecchione are heading back to their current schools.

Silk is leaving for the natl program
Both Vechionne and Fitzgerald are heading back to MC for another year. Vechionne will graduate and play a year and head to UNH. 10/15% chance he might do 2 years juniors. probably USHL.

Putting the other 2 aside, who I like and have deals etc.

Rest assured, you grabbed a blue chipper in Vechionne. He is not behind either of the otehr 2 and in my opinion, will be the best of the 3 when they play hockey east. not putting down the others as they are both exceptional kids and players but MV is a very good player./ Everyone looks at him as being older because he is a junior and they are freshmen but in reality, he is a later 93 and they are 94's. it is months difference, not years.

He is by far the fastest of the 3 and is a pure goal scorer. The difference is he is a Saugus kid who stay off the radar screen and works hard. doesnt do most of the showcase stuff and gets little if any fanfare. Him and Alex Gaceck were on the 93 Minuteman Flames for years together and they were equal.

PC was after him, Holy Cross was and Harvard was talking with him. He is going to UNH because of Serino and his ties there. the kid also loves the rink.

wait and see which one of the 3 has a bigger impact in their 4 years there.

usually has something to do with ties to someone they know. Reading kids for the most part are all for UNH since their coach is a former player.

If he was paired with Gacek.. That's about as good as it gets for prospects- Sounds like there was the old.. stay behind a yr game being played early on. how can one kid be a Jr and the other 2 be Frosh. and only be months difference in age.. nonsense..

Re: UNH Wildcats 2010 off-season thread

Vechionne will be 17 when he graduates from hs. A lot of city kids just go to school. cant speak for Silk but Fitzgerald is a late 94 and never stayed abck. A keeper+ as well
After a year in the USHL, watch the player who walks on campus in 2012.
Will improve when he plays with USHL kids for 80 gms. many kids dont have as much upside as they are tricked up ponies where he has not
