UNH Wildcats: 2010-2011 Season Thread

Re: UNH Wildcats: 2010-2011 Season Thread

It's funny how a win now can make the week, even after the men were HUGE in beating Maine with a 2 goal lead....but we all know thatthe women needed this win badly and in retrospect, Lordsontheboards was correct in that they needed to play as a team....they did that and realized together the release of a lot of pressure....so now we enjoy the Holidays with a bit more optimism and believe in the fact that that the Wildcats will make a run for the playoffs.....me? I'd raather believe in that then a 20 loss season....yes my glass is always half full

Way to go Ms. Minton!

Way to go Ms. Minton!

WAKEFIELD, Mass. – Lindsey Minton (Richardson, Texas), a junior goaltender on the University of New Hampshire women's ice hockey team, was named WHEA Defensive Player of the Week by Women's Hockey East on Monday. Minton received the same distinction Nov. 1.

Minton stopped 57 of 60 shots in two games last week to record a .950 save percentage and 1.52 goals-against-average. She made 28 saves against Dartmouth College, including seven on six DC power-play opportunities, to record her fourth shutout of the season and backbone UNH to a 1-0 victory on Dec. 11. Minton had double-digit saves in both the second (13) and third (10) periods against the Big Green. Earlier in the week, she made 29 saves, including 14 in the second period, vs. Harvard University.

In 14 games this season (all starts), Minton has a 7-7-0 record with a 1.64 GAA, .932 save percentage and four shutouts – all at home. In 45 career games, Minton is 28-12-2 with a 1.78 GAA, .919 save percentage and seven shutouts.

New Hampshire returns to action Jan. 9, 2011 at home against Northeastern University. Game time at the Whittemore Center is 2 p.m.

Dear Santa,
Can you please bring Lindsey Minton some help? My Mom will bake you whatever cookies you want.

Just in from the mall. I'm pretty sure I saw Coach McCloskey sitting on Santa's lap...with a long list in hand....

Looks like both Mom and Santa delivered. :D

Is this a reference to Ms. Ryan in the 12-13 thread, or perhaps an as of yet unannounced commit?

Or just reiterating Ms. Minton's recognition for last week?

Don't know anything about Ms. Ryan, but chances are it is not in reference to the early 11-12 commit, currently ranked #30 among PWHL goaltenders this season. Of course, there's always a chance Santa wasn't able to intervene with Admissions. ;)

I imagine it was actually in reference to Ms. Minton's recent accomplishments. She IS playing exceptionally well, and will remain a key to the turnaround in UNH fortunes in the second half.

Astonishingly, there are several truly excellent goalies in the PWHL who again this season aren't attracting appropriate D1 interest, despite the clear need for their skills in many programs.

Big honor for Karyn Bye Dietz

Big honor for Karyn Bye Dietz

ZURICH, Switzerland – Karyn Bye Dietz (UNH '93) has been named one of six members of the International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF) Hall of Fame Class of 2011. Bye Dietz, a standout with both the University of New Hampshire and USA Hockey teams, is just the fifth woman – 19th American overall – to be inducted into the IIHF. The announcement was made Thursday and the ceremony will take place May 15, 2011 in Bratislava, Slovakia, in conjunction with the 75th IIHF World Championship.

Bye Dietz was inducted into the UNH Hall of Fame in 1998. As a four-year standout for the Wildcats, she amassed 164 points on 100 goals and 64 assists; upon graduation, Bye Dietz ranked second in career goals and fourth in points (currently fourth in goals and 10th in points). The native of River Falls, Wis., led the team in both goals and points all four years; she is the only 'Cat to lead the team in goals four times and one of only two players to top the point leaderboard four times. Bye Dietz, a two-time captain, led UNH to a pair of ECAC championships.

After graduating from New Hampshire with a degree in Physical Education, Bye Dietz earned a master's degree and played two more years at Concordia University (Montreal).

Bye Dietz went on to compete at two Olympics as well as six IIHF World Women's Championship tournaments. As an alternate captain for the 1998 U.S. Olympic Women's Ice Hockey Team, she recorded a team-high five goals and three assists to led the team to a gold medal – the first awarded in women's ice hockey; the team was inducted into the U.S. Hockey Hall of Fame in 2009. Bye Dietz tallied three goals and three assists in the 2002 Olympics to help the U.S. team win a silver medal.

Bye Dietz, a two-time USA Hockey Women's Player of the Year, is one of the most prolific goal scorers and point producers in U.S. history. She recorded 51 points (27g, 24a) in 30 games during her six IIFH World Women's Championship tourneys, all of which resulted in silver medals. Overall, she finished with 110 goals and 119 assists for 229 points in 175 games for Team USA to rank fifth on the all-time scoring list.

The Fifth ?. I'm aware of James and Granato being in the Hall. Who are the other two already in ?.

OnMAA are you getting your Halls mixed up? There are two ...the HHOF and the IIHF. Both are housed in the HHOF in Toronto but are two seperate entities.

Yeah, but it does not answer the question, so I looked it up and one of them is Geraldine Heaney, the other Riikka Nieminen.

The fact that this thread is on page 2 reflects how our season has been going, so I for one hope that everyone had a restful, reflective Holidays, and are now ready to play their butts off! I hope we go hard and full speed the rest of the season, letting the players that want to be out there, moving there skates, hustling on the puck, and crashing the net. get the ice time, and the rest can warm the bench! 20 losses....KMA! Go Nuts out there and play for the Uni that you should be proud to wear...make the playoffs and see what happens.......IMHO :o)

Re: Big honor for Karyn Bye Dietz

While the outcome was the same as most of their games this year, I think that having been off for a month took it's toll today, as it did for the men's first game back after break, in losing to St. Lawrence....after coming out cold in the first period, where Northeastern scored it's 3 goal margin, UNH didn't play a bad second and third....so it's on to the Friars who gave BU all it could handle today...c'mon Cats!

Re: UNH Wildcats: 2010-2011 Season Thread

Once again I'm moving this thread up but now it's because I hope that the league should take notice that hopefully with their last 2 games, UNH is ready to play team hockey and be a threat to everyone they play......next up is Quinnipiac on a Tuesday night...ugh!
