UNH Recruits: 2012-2018

Nice pipeline developing between western New York and UNH: Phil DeSimone, Andrew Poturalski, and now Frankie Cefalu. Also, fine interview, Mike; sounds like a fine recruit.

I would pump the brakes on this recruit, might turn out great but Fr. So. success at Nichols folliwed by 2 years USHL and high scoring in USHL is different than Sr. year success at Nichols followed by EHL experience.

I think the comparisons are a big stretch based on development path and hence unfair. Likely the reason no names of other schools recruiting.

I certainly hope I am wrong and Cefalu is a diamond in the rough, but he looks like a 4 year forward number 13 or 14 on a top ncaa program... wow has UNH fallen...

C-H-C,

Do you have an idea what these rankings would project to for potential draft rounds?
Good question. As a guidepost, consider what happened last June in the 2014 NHL Draft. Here are the UNH recruits who were on the NHL CSS Final Rankings for North American players and what happened to them in the draft:
Shane Eiserman - Final rank #45; Drafted #100 overall in 4th Round by Ottawa.
Warren Foegele - Final rank #66; Drafted #67 overall in 3rd Round by Carolina.
Dylan Chanter - Final rank #164; Not drafted.

My guess is Marcus Vela will get drafted in 6th or 7th Round and Liam Darcy - who is a talented prep school defenseman with below average size - won't get drafted.
Mike Buckley, who is the UNH goalie coach and works for the Pittsburgh Penguins as a goalie development coach, also coaches Mike Robinson. Buckley has said very positive things about Robinson and his future. I'm pretty much clueless when it comes to projecting what round a goalie might be drafted but I think Robinson will be drafted. The last UNH goalie to be drafted was Brian Foster.

According to OTB's twitter Robinson will play in the USPHL next season.

Over The Boards - ‏@OTBPuckWatch
Draft-eligible Lawrence Academy 97 G Mike Robinson (#UNH recruit) will play for Jr. Bruins @USPHL next season.

Thanks for that info Bob.
Have confirmed that Mike Robinson will play in goal for the Junior Bruins Premiere team next season. Danny Tirone played the first half of last season with them.
Advantages for Robinson include:
~ More games (50 in USPHL vs 25 in Prep School).
~ Can continue in-person coaching with Mike Buckley.

Re: UNH Recruits: 2012-2016

The NLI signing period begins on Wednesday April 15th. The only UNH recruit that signed an NLI during the early signing period last November was Liam Blackburn. Even he is not guaranteed to enroll next fall though it it is highly likely. Any other list of enrollment dates, including the one on my blog, are best guesses.

Re: UNH Recruits: 2012-2016

Great news! Thanks for posting, Mike.

More interesting news, than great news. Nazarian is a recruit who excites me, long term, but one who seemed pretty much pegged for another year in the USHL and a 2016 arrival.

What does this mean for the rest of the class? It has been speculated by most, that UNH would add four forwards - replacing Downing, Willows, Thrush & Camper - which would give them 16 forwards. Blackburn signed early, Nazarian has signed and Cefalu (NLI/Walk-On) has announced that he is attending UNH this fall so that makes three. If they're going to stick with four, it had better be Vela - he is more talented/advanced than any other forward recruit in the pipeline save for, maybe, Blackburn.

Did UNH make the decision to take Nazarian ahead of BVR and Cefalu ahead of fellow 20 year olds Miller & Kalinowski (who despite their age are eligible for another year of junior hockey). I would have no complaints about those decisions - or are they planning to bring in five or six forwards (5-6 forwards in the seats is a LOT)?

My biggest concern for Nazarian is he gets the McNicholas treatment and matriculates 'ahead of schedule', but never really gets a shot. My biggest concern for UNH is that they stick to bringing in just four forwards and the fourth is one of Miller/Kalinowski. As I've stated before, I really think UNH needs to get its best talent into the program ASAP so they can grow together and give UNH the best chance to turn the corner quickly. Vela needs to be a part of this class for that to happen...

Especially with that minus 17
