UNH Recruits: 2012-2014

Re: UNH Recruits: 2012-2014

He has 8 schools lined up and more to come. Academics? Please, most are far superior to UNH, far superior academic wise. If a kid is not getting thru admissions it is because they were jr kids loaded up on on line classes.

University of New Hampshire , with an acceptance rate of 73.4 percent and an early acceptance rate of 82.9 percent

He has provided transcripts to schools with acceptance in single digit and is being recruited hard

BC is 28%
BU around 57%
U Mane around 77%
UVM around 45%
PC around 43%
Northeastern around 38%
Merrimack around 78%
U Mass 68%
Lowell 73%

End result, mc, unh and maine are safety schools....

I can't quickly find the numbers but remember UNH has a very high in state acceptance rate that would tend to skew that number. Not many hockey players come from NH...

I know a number of people and there are several on this board that were “out of state” denied at UNH and accepted at BU and others. You also have the cases of White (UNO) and Reid (SCSU) to point out some of those issues.

Finally that is the general acceptance rate.

What if BU (57%) for example takes the clearing house as the academic bar for Hockey because of the additional special skill of hockey - Bourque and Coyle were both clearly rocket scientists... So the hockey team may pull that overall number up.

The general acceptance rate is poor data for this type of discussion.

Maybe, not trying to argue. UNH has probably the easiest admission level of all of the schools in Hockey East, them and Maine and maybe UNH. If the kid didnt get in probably was not capable of going to college period. UNH always has been a safety school for BU/BC etc and always will be.

Re: UNH Recruits: 2012-2014

99.9% of the time, unless they can't get in, a kid is going to accept a similar offer from BC/BU over UNH. That sometimes works in UNH's favor as not all the top players are great students.

UNH, Maine AND UNH?

Don't kid yourself, UNH has elevated itself to the 9th Ivy. I'm pretty sure their strategy is to deny EVERYONE who applies for the next 5 years to tighten up the acceptance rate. Look out Harvard!

Okay, you follow hockey but now you are an expert on everything that is academia. I appreciate your hockey comments whether I agree or not but your assault on UNH as this low tier academic institution is frankly getting boring given that it has absolutely no real data and knowledge behind it.

Hmm... and yet Reid is at SCSU and White is at UNO and the reported reason for both not being at UNH is admissions. Your reading comprehension is outstanding.

I am not saying UNH is the greatest school of all time (rate 101 on the USNews list of 250) but there are issues getting into UNH as an out of state student. Most UNH hockey players are from out of state. I personally know several people who got into BU (53 of 250 for reference) and didn't get into UNH and they were all out of state applicants. I use BU as my reference as I have knowledge of these particular cases. There is at least one poster who has indicated they are in that boat too. Not saying it is right or wrong just that it is.

Personally I think this apparent admissions issue at UNH is real and yet extremely silly. For the $ out of state students bring in I would think you would want as many as you can get.

Here is a tweet from Mike Vecchione about his decommitment from UNH:

I was born in NH, and have lived here for a most of my life (only a few years living out of state in the late 20's) and went to high school in state. I applied to UNH, BU, Dartmouth, & Northeastern. Out of all those schools, the only one I wasn't accepted to, was UNH, and they said it was based on my "Academics". Now I had an A- average in HS with great test scores, and actually graduated a semeter early. I wanted UNH only for Marine Biology and had covered all the requirements that were available in HS to fit that major. Now this was back in 1994. I was accepted at the other three school, though I was not seeking the same major at those schools. And I was able to enroll early at BU for the spring semester, and was able to complete my courses to finish my freshman year at the same time that my friends in HS were getting ready for graduation. Now paying for school no matter where I went, was not an issue. I don't see how my academics were an issue. So unless I was turned down at UNH because I would be considered an in-state student (highest in-state costs around) and they wanted more out of state tuition money, i think the "denied for academics" line is BS, or they have standards that are so far out of whack. And given that that was 17 years ago and I hear the admissions has gotten tougher, then it could be hard for athletes to make the cut. Currently I have a niece looking at schools, and she got into UNH and her grades were nowhere near what I had for grades. So I think in most cases we are just left scratching our heads. But if the major reason we lose recruits is do to higher admission standards, then how can they hope to compete with other schools for top end players, when those schools don't have a harder standards. It is what it is. It doesn't make any of us happy, but we have to live with it.

You’re the 1st instate applicant where I have heard this story. But it is similar to out of state stories where I know the background.

I am not sure it is tougher standards but a screw ball inconsistency at work. Must drive the coaches nuts.

As to the M.V. situation only hearing his side of the situation, it looks shameful. Maybe Llaggalia (spelled wrong) didn’t need to be coddled and went to Denver for far different reasons, these 2 stories “feel” similar…

For me the coaching staff is getting hard to like

must have gotten lost out there on the high road....

I was thinking the same thing. Even with MV not coming we still have a real nice class coming in next year. Added to our existing young talent it puts us in good shape IMO. We can't objectively judge the MV situation without knowing both sides which will likely never happen. Citing other decommits is meaningless as we are no different than other schools in that regard.

When the final story is written MV may have a nice career but UNH will be fine, as well. Certainly, his latest tweet is making me feel not as bad about his departure.

Why? He is just being honest. I would rather have that than the typical phoney, politicaly correct crap spewed out there today. I give him credit for having the courage to walk away from a scholarship and stick to his principals.

I would be dissapointed if a kid walked away with zero deals in hand because he felt he was intentionally misled. That takes guts and is the kind of kid you want in your locker room

Maybe he could have said, "we just both decided to go our own ways", or "it wasn't the right fit so I wanted to look around", or maybe, "they were great but it just didnt work out"

Say it like it is and stand behind it. Which is exactly what he did with zero deals in hand.

We get it...he could punt a puppy off a building and push an old lady down a flight of stairs and you'd say they had it coming and MV was just sticking up for what he believed in.

Fine, he felt like he was misled. He's entitled to feel that way, but there in itself is the problem. He went on a public forum labeled an entire program as "dishonest" because of how he "felt". That's a mighty big accusation to lay down on a feeling. You better be **** sure that the people you're talking about are really dishonest and have INTENTIONALLY misled you...not an honest miscommunication...not a case of a player and his parents hearing what they want to hear...but flat out purposely led someone to believe one thing and then did another with malicious intent before you hit someone with an accusation like that.

I'm sure coaches around the country feel like they deal with dishonest players all the time. Guys who change commitments...guys who agree to take visits and then commit to another school before they do. Guys who say they are going to class and doing well and then end up not making grades. I've yet to see one of them go on twitter and label one of those kids dishonest and try to hurt their reputation in a public forum.

That smacks of a sense of entitlement and someone who doesn't know how to handle their affairs with class and dignity. Quite possibly someone who has had their parents handle all their problems and coddle them for the last 18 years so they don't know how deal with adversity and not getting their way because someone is always there to tell them it's not their fault and everyone else is wrong. Not exactly the kind of person I'd want in my locker room.

I really do hope he lands on his feet and has a nice career. By all accounts he's a fantastic hockey player with a ton of potential. I also hope that he learns that there is a right and wrong way to deal with people and situations, even when you think you've been wronged. There was no reason for him to talk about this on twitter, facebook, or anywhere else. He did what he thought was right, and should have left it at that.

Re: UNH Recruits: 2012-2014

Regarding MV and Mass HS hockey....look at Harvard. Colin Blackwell's having an impact as a frosh with no USHL time. He and MV shared CC MVP last year....if I'm MV and I see what Colin's doing, there's no way I'm waiting another full year. Barring injury he'll be ready for D1 hockey in 2012-13.

CB played competitive hockey outside miaa hockey during high school. He was a national festival candidate and played split season for the junior bruins. Level of play and competitiveness in each of them is like comparing apples to oranges.

Re: UNH Recruits: 2012-2014

Macdonald IS a better player than MV, no doubt...and all 3 of them are producing more than MV right now and all three are recieving less scholorship money than MV...

There you go again with your foolish talk and fringe info and half truths. I would be producing more if I was out injured or hurt most of the year. Also, please do not compare 92 birthyear kids playing in the EJ, a borderline tier 6 junior league that would lose by 5+ goals minimum evry game vs the bottom half USHL teams.

Smith and Macdonald both tried to hook up in USHL, one was cut, other made himself available and didnt get drafted in over 15 rounds. Do you realize how tough the USHL is vs EJ? Alex Gacek for example is in 3rd year in USHL, with avg at best success. Lit up the EJ and had 61 points as a 15 year old before he went to USHL and is better than Smith and Macdonald by a very good margin. Billy Fitzgerald was NE Prep school dman of the year, went to USHL, dressed les than half of the games and than came back and did very well with Monarchs. EJ is littered with studs in their league who couldnt dress in USHL and or got cut. very few Mass kids do well out there. To pretend that MV with 9 points, which equates to 35+ points if he played full season is not doing well is talk from someone who is ignorant about the USHL.

Go to USHL stats page and you will see player after player, committed to the Denver, MN, ND types who played 2/3 years in USHL, almost to a player, first year solid, 15-20+ points, 2nd year better, 3rd year very, very good. Same exact thing MV would do.

Macdonald is not a better player and having 32 pts in 29 games as a 19+ year old in a yier 5 or 6 type league does not impress me. I might also point out he had over 10% of his production this past weekend in getting 4 meaningless points in a 11-0 and 8-0 wins. That is the EJ, crap teams outside the top 3-5.
Has had 14 games with 0 points and a 7 game stretch with 0. If that was MV in a league 4 times tougher top to bottom, you would be telling us what a failure he was.

Eiserman? Has 2 goals in 9 games in the has been prep league, one of the goals was an empty netter vs div 2 Groton.... Lighting it up there[/QUOTE]

Gacek is in 2nd year and was injured in the start of his first year. fyi

Pay no attention to ushr reported stats since they are manipulated and changed by some schools upon self entry. They may not be what is reported on the official signed game sheet as in the ej, ushl and I would assume the bchl. Prep stats should be entered by the league if they are being looked at as official.

Re: UNH Recruits: 2012-2014

ith all due respect, you are simply talking out of your rear end and making crap up./ Have you seen him play a single game in USHL? Have you talked toa single coach in USHL? Both Westside and Vernon from BCHL made pretty substantial offers to Tri City this week, thinky Tri City was out of play offs, to try and get him, mostly cash.

He is doing very well and was top 2 line/ppp guy for them. He has been fighting injuries since Buc Bowl. I love his two linemates from last year as players but not for a second do I feel they are better players. Not one Hockey East school made a single offer for CB last year, another playr I love to watch play.

I have spoken to the Tri City coach probably 10 times and he said he was their top player at their camp and when healthy, top 3 at least on team.

Yes MV was the sr captain and was a 93, BC is still in hs and is older than him. Went to Delbarton game yesterday and I will say it again, if you cant dominate there, zero-50 chance of dominating in USHL

More kids coming from CC than preps and jrs to Hockey east. CM, MC and CM alone have placed about 10-12 in last 2/3 years. Remember, these kids are 16-18, not 20 year olds heading off to be fillers in college

He will be playing next year, several vistits this week alone with offers in hand, at least 2 of which are superior programs than UNH and have won natl championships, which UNH can not say.

Why don't you list those direct entry 10/12 from the last 2/3 years from the CC and where they are in the college line ups. Then I will give you double from last 2 years of direct prep route. I'll start start manno, goiesthbere, sheary, mcnally D,mcnally F,cerratani, ferriero, hayes, michelek, perriera. What was that you said about the prep league( it's a has been league). Ok

It is a has been league and has dropped off big time, big time and the college coaches agree. never seen so few at Flood Marr in 15 years. As a matter of fact, several were at CC games exact same time
Seeing that prep is kids from all over country and riddled with over agerrs and repeaters, no one cares. CC is all 17/18 year old local kids who drive to school every day

Right and wrong way to deal with people and situations? Exactly right and UNH failed to do that. For a kid to walk away and decommitt with zero deals in place says to me the kid has guts and wont put up with being missled.

Anyone that knows him knows that we are talking about a very quiet, straight forward kid who was a captain and great leader of a very good MC team. I am sure it took a lot to walk away from his dream but some people have the balls to stand up for the truth and do not want to go deeper into a relationship with someone they dont trust. Good for him

If he was wrong I would say so. He isnt and if he felt like being direct about it, that is his right. To set the record straight and move on.
