UNH Offseason Contract Edition.

As an aside, I was actually thinking about jumping on for UNH season tickets for the first time in 30+ seasons (Snively) this summer, but the lack of any buzz has at least put those plans again on hold. Maybe next season ...

After a couple of years of the 6 game package we decided to get full season tickets and have been not only underwhelmed but actively disappointed by the lack of communication. I've received a receipt so far and an email with my "tickets". No information whatsoever on any of the other perks that come with being a STH. I'm kind of amazed, tbh. How hard is it to send out a welcome letter/package when purchasing season tickets that explains what you're getting? My enthusiasm has actually been dampened by how little they seem to care.

Jakob Hellsten played well and - seemingly won UNH a lot of games last season - but a closer look at the stats reveals a save percentage of just .909 (resulting in a 2.04 GAA) for the Swede. Jared Whale had an identical .909 save percentage (2.67 GAA) on a worse defensive team at UAA...

Wildcat opponents scored 2.50 goals per game overall, while Seawolves opponents netted 3.10 goal per game.

I'm no longer convinced Hellsten was the difference he was perceived to be for UNH in 2023-24. Perhaps the eye-opening stat (and reality) is how disappointing Tyler Muszelik played posting a save percentage of .874, while allowing a 3.38 GAA...

Would it be fair to say Hellsten played up to the team defense, while Muszelik underperformed team defense?

--

The team is experienced and balanced - with the strongest roster they've had in a long while. If Whale can perform to a 2-2.5 GAA I think UNH has its best season of the Souza era. Its what comes next that is so hard to predict (and creates and uncertain future, IMO)...

Yeah, this year has been far worse than any previous year as far as communication. Nothing to say when we were going to get access to tickets or how we would access them. I just got the one email with a link to download my tickets and ID card into my digital wallet that required no login at all, so if anyone happened to get ahold of it they could get my tickets. No details on how/if we can even transfer tickets to someone else if we can't make it to a game or something. No info on parking.

Not great customer service...

Agree with everything your wrote here, Dan.

Rico DiMatteo may be an upgrade over Tyler Muszelik in net also.

Check out the “Trevor Stewart left UAA” thread where a couple of their posters wrote highly of Jared Whale last year.

Very fair take. Especially the Muszelik part. Seeing him turn up at UConn (IIRC) is pure "addition by subtraction".

I don't want to equate Whale to Hellsten just yet - premature and likely not fair to either at this point, but with the basic stats you're relying on Dan, I can see the logic, and the rest will play out shortly. UNH's team defense should be even better this season, so that's another point in favor of your take. I think it's fair to say, we all hope you're right.

For what it's worth ... while UNH's string of underperforming (mediocre or substandard also easily apply) goalie recruits continues pretty much unabated since Umile retired, to give the devil his due, MS7 and his guys have interestingly developed a knack for finding better goalies while on dumpster diving forays into the transfer portal ... starting modestly with Fessenden, who wasn't great either, but outperformed the other guys he was competing with ... more recently Hellsten, and (hopefully) Whale now to follow. I'm not quite sure what to make of a recruiting team that does so poorly with their prep/junior talent ID efforts, yet seems to be developing this weird knack of finding quality guys buried in the depths of D-1 or at the end of better teams' depth charts? The only thing I can come up with is, they seem to struggle forecasting future growth (or lacking the know-how to develop the young'uns on campus), but do better with older guys closer to the finished product?

But if Whale can match Hellsten's performance, with everyone else a year older/better, I'm still sticking to #4 in HEA.

This is exactly what I am talking about. I did ask about the ticket amnesty/transfer and was told that it "would be ready by the end of the month". It would seem that you would have that worked out ahead of time and would give your STH's the opportunity for an exchange before you sold to the general public.

I would really like info on the parking. Or the free tickets to a football game. Or the free tickets to a women's game.

Thanks for letting me know it's not just me!

The other two goalies on Yukon’s roster this season are first year’s, so will be interesting to see how much time Muszelik, a NHL draftee, gets in net.

I am also sticking with my out-on-a-limb HEA fourth place finish for UNH.

He was a late 6th round pick in a 7 round 2022 draft. Florida has since drafted two more goalies, one apiece late, in the last two drafts. Given that the Panthers are pretty solid in goal at the NHL level for the foreseeable future, I suspect Muszelik isn't going to be offered a contract anytime soon by the Florida organization, just like Mike Robinson was a Sharks' pick (further up in the draft) several years earlier, and was never offered a deal with their organization. I seriously doubt there is any long-term interest out there elsewhere in the NHL for when Mucinex's rights with the Panthers lapse. So his being "an NHL draftee" at this point is really nothing other than a side note to what has been a mediocre amateur career to date. Looking at his USNDT stats for two seasons before he came to UNH ... he averaged between .875-.880 as his save percentage, and that's pretty much where he landed these last two seasons in Durham.

Not good enough for D-1, not even close for anything high level pro (AHL+) in North America. Borderline ECHL back-up numbers.

If my best buddy Luce can transform him into something that justified his draft status two seasons ago, then good for him. My guess is that he's there in case one (or both) of his incoming frosh G's aren't up to the task.

Obviously at some point, he caught someone's eye to get a USNDT invite, and then did something to earn a roster slot.

What's happened over the last four (4) seasons strongly indicates he wasn't up to the challenge at the next level(s) ...

UNH gets exciting news today and this thread is almost on page two? This thread should be blowing up right now.

I see they got a new recruit Blake Cash from Hampton Falls NH playing with Seacoast Academy U16. If I read they got Adam Benak then that would be exciting news.I haven't seen any other news today.

Yup, I was just trying to be provocative with my “a NHL draft pick” insert for Tyler Muszelik, which had the desired effect as you made all good points on our recent goalie foibles. Yes, Mike Robinson was a third round NHL draftee by the Sharks, recorded 0.915, 0.899, 0.881, and 0.904 save percentages during his four years at UNH, and last year played for Huntsville in the SPHL. Compare with Ty Taylor, a seventh round NHL draftee by the Lightning who recorded 0.855, 0.873, and 0.802 (eek!) save percentages during his three years overlapping Mike Robinson at UNH, and last year played for Evansville in the SPHL. Before n those to NHL draftees, UNH got four decent years from non-NHL draftee Danny Tirone in net, with 0.924, 0.907, 0.couple 910, and 0.917 save percentages during his four years, although his athletic flopping style gave many of apoplexy. And, before DT, UNH had perhaps their best future NHL goalie in Casey DeSmith with 0.926, 0.924, and 0.920 save percentages over his shortened three-year career as a Wildcat. CdS’s first year was split fairly evenly with Adam Clark for games in net, before Clark spent most of his last three years on the bench. If CdS can play in another 52 games as a back up goalie in the NHL, he will surpass Ty Conklin’s 216 total NHL games played.

Will be interesting to see in a couple years if net-minder Grout (?) breaks through the portal goalies’ lock on the UNH net after a five-year run.

Local kid who has some promise committed.

We'll see Drew ty for the update. Actually doing some snooping the Seacoast Academy 16 and under team this year are ranked 7th in the nation right now so their program is going in the right direction...Hi Ref hope you had a nice summer.

Seems like a solid pick-up, but just one commit and three years away. We'll see. Hope his current development path sticks and/or ramps up!

Is this another UNH legacy - previous commit Jack Sadowski has been UNH's only legacy to date. Is Blake Cash related to (son of) former UNH forward Corey Cash? Corey was from Dover and still lives in the Seacoast area...

Corey Cash resides in Hampton Falls so I do believe we have a legacy.
