UNH Offseason Contract Edition.

... I am amazed at the Leafs’ home 5-14 postseason record under Sheldon Keefe since he became HC in 2018. Given Scotiabank Arena's naming rights at Can $800 million and the Leafs’ franchise by far and away the wealthiest NHL organization at Can$1.3 billion, I think that it is all the more amazing that Keefe has not been canned yet, which puts UNH's embrace of MS7 in perspective, I guess. Not to mention the Leafs’ Stanley Cup drought that dates to 1967, back in the days of Frank Mahovlich (spelling?) and Dave Keon, IIRC.

Now, just watch, the Bruins will begin their implosion tonight and reverse the long sorry fortunes of the Leafs.

Your postseason vibes so far this Spring seem flawless, Snives. B's laid a humongous egg last night. Still don't see them losing another two straight to the Leafs (I'm told they are the only Leafs that fall in the Spring lol), but Toronto's JV squad seemed to get the better of them last night.

Frank Mahovlich was indeed one of the top Leafs in their last Cup run, along with other household names as Tim Horton, Johnny Bauer, Terry Sawchuck, Eddie Shack, Bob Pulford, Red Kelly, and your aforementioned Dave Keon.

Mahovlich ended his professional career in Birmingham AL (WHA) with the Bulls in 1978, playing alongside perhaps the greatest collection of hockey goons of all time ... PLUS what former UNH player?

Leafs did not even have their best player last night, other than apparently their second string goalie. I think that the series will go seven games.

I agree with lindah that Rod Langway was on that team, along with Dave Hanson and the Bulls’ highest point scorer that season, Ken “The Rat” Linseman. I recall seeing Linseman on the cover of SI at some point in his career, with him standing up amidst players sprawled all over the ice during a brouhaha. :)

Too bad that the Huntsville Chargers were not able to stick in Div 1 college hockey, as that was one OOC game that we could usually win.

ok, I will try using emoticons, until they get pulled away again.

Ah...but it was Guy Smith who won the first AVCO World Cup while playing for the Whalers.

One of Guy's teammates with the original WHA champion Whalers was Larry Pleau, whose son Steve played at UNH during the "bridge" years between Snively, JFK and The Whitt.

Maybe we can turn this into a UNH/college hockey version of "Six Degrees of Cap Raeder" or something ... ;)

Thanks for the link, didn't realize he was a teammate of the player killed by the skate blade. Must have been horrible to witness. Doesn't sound like the NHL is in his future (or at least the near future), but wish him the best.

There is video of the tragic incident somewhere on the Internet, if you have a strong enough stomach.

When this happened and its aftermath, I strangely ended up being a Yank subject matter "expert" for a bunch of English hockey fans looking for more insight into the incident on Twitter/X. Turns out that not many of the UK fans of the sport even know how to skate, much less how to play. Considering the thousands of hours I've invested in learning football (soccer) from many of those folks over the years, it was nice to finally be able to reciprocate, to a degree.

I seem to recall posting about Robinson's presence at the game for one of the teams on one of our since-closed threads during this past winter. Unforgettable event, for all the wrong reasons ...

Another excellent game by Swayman, but Bruins appeared to be outplayed in every other facet of the game tonight. Back to Bawstin for game 7. This could be the season for the Leafs to go ALL THE WAY.

Those 52 games that Langway played for the WHA Birmingham Bulls gave him 1046 total top pro-level games, 35 more than JvR’s 1011 NHL games, who added 71 games this season.

TvR added 70 more games this season for a total of 601, which leapfrogged him past Jaime Hislop’s 551 games (206 WHA plus 345 NHL) for 7th place on the UNH top pro games played list.

Brett Pesce added 70 more games for a total of 627 to maintain 6th place.

Warren Foegele added 82 games for a total of 431 to leapfrog John Gray, Andy Brickley, and Bob Miller for 11th place, 6 games behind Dave Lumley and 15 games behind Jay Miller.

Finally, Casey DeSmith added 31 games for a total of 165 to close within 13 games of Eric Boguniecki for 24th place.

Barring injury, Brett Pesce is eventually gonna leave all the rest of these guys in the dust. AND he's about to get rich(er) again.

Who woulda thunk TvR would have such a long and productive NHL career? With JvR nearing the end, TvR could pass him, too ...

The only curiosity or concern I have is that the Coach seems to think he can turn 3 star recruits into five stars. I see little of that in evidence during his tenure. The Conmy comment by him seems off base. Conmy has been excellent since day 1. He's clearly a recruiting coup for UNH but he showed up at a 4-5 star level. Credit to Coach and the staff for getting and apparently keeping him at UNH (not at all a given with NIL and transfer rules) but it's not a development success.

I have a thought here Snivley, it doesn’t seem fair to compare a goalies games with other roster players. Any thoughts or suggestions.

Agreed. And, I had no idea that Pesce would become such a fine player in the NHL, even when he got pulled away from his senior year. I was less surprised when TvR left to go pro after his junior year, I guess because his older brother only stayed two years. This past season was a good one for all five of our alums in avoiding serious injury and playing 70+ games (CdS 30 games in net).
