UNH Off Season Thread 2011

Re: UNH Off Season Thread 2011

My thanks as well. Got 2 tickets to see Gryba and Butler. :)

Not a problem. Feel free to leave "good rep" or whatever. Im still new to this so Im not sure what that means, haha.

Theres not much better than free hockey. :) Enjoy the game

Re: UNH Off Season Thread 2011

Da Costa has played a few with Ottawa.

Yup. He played in their final four games, logging 15 minutes of ice time in the season finale against Boston. Saw some time on a 2nd power play unit. No points in those four games.

♪"Should I stay or should I go?"♪ - Blake Kessel's decision to either sign with the NY Islanders or return to play UNH hockey for his senior year should become apparent by Saturday evening. That's the time of the Annual Men's Hockey Awards Banquet when the Captain(s) and Assistant Captain(s) for next season are announced.

I'm not sure being named/not being named an A or C will have anything to do with his decision. Though times are different now, I think in 1999 Bekar was named an Alternate with O'Brien and when he left late in the offseason (August?) Krog and O'B were named co-captains (That's from memory, I could be way off?)

I agree. I think we've had it happen at BC too. I'm thinking Orpik was in line for a C or an A in the spring announcement in 2001 and then bolted late in the summer of 2001.

By the recent signings of Donovan and Ness, the islanders have demonstrated their desire to bring in Kessel next year. So right now there is no decision for him to make.
But the islanders also lose his rights soon, so they will likely try to trade him this summer to salvage his value. Look for Blake to sign a pro deal with someone other than NYI in June.

So the guessing game will continue beyond Saturday night...oh well.
I can understand that Kessel's status as a Captain or Alternate Captain won't be the decisive factor for him. However, if his teammates choose him, particularly to be a Captain, I can imagine it being one of several factors that he takes under consideration.

Idealistically, but realistically, there's one thing that talks in a situation like this.... I just hope its not something that's dragged out until August where it puts the team in a tough spot.

I think the team knows what they are going to do in either situation already; it looks to me like they have a plan for this situation in place. The issue appears to be one player Ryan Randall, he more than anyone wants to know. If Kessel goes he comes in, if Kessel stays he goes back to juniors for another year. Randall was quoted in the paper during the regionals that he still didn't know which way things were going to break, seems pretty clear to me what is influencing that issue.

Re: UNH Off Season Thread 2011

Ideal win-win-win scenario for fans-team-player: Kessel stays at UNH, enhances NHL value by becoming a dominant player, and either signs with NYI this time next year or becomes free agent in August next summer (NHL teams have exclusive rights to a draftee through August 15 following the graduation of [the player's] college class). Yeah, there's a cap on rookie salaries but teams can be creative with bonuses so signing later can make a positive (or, of course, negative) difference.

BTW, remember Trevor Smith? Islanders org did not pay dividends for him.

Re: UNH Off Season Thread 2011

Kessel actually becomes a free agent this summer, as it has been four years since he was drafted in 2007. However, he would have to apply for that free agency early in the summer (June I believe is the deadline). He will never play a game for the Islander organization. If he is not a Wildcat next year it is because he signed with a team as a free agent in August.

Re: UNH Off Season Thread 2011

I agree with Rock.
Kessel was drafted in '07.
Was not a bona fide college student until 9/09.
Therefore his 4 year clock runs with the draft date, not with is college class.
Becomes a free agent (if he applies) this June.
NYI aren't offering. But they won't waste him, either. And no other team will trade for him unless he assures them that he will leave school. My guess is he is gone.

Re: UNH Off Season Thread 2011

Kessel's post game comments after the ND loss sounded like he was staying.

I understand he is happy to go either way, depending on how things shakeout(trade). Also a new recruit may come into the picture for 2011 if he does go.
