UNH- How Far West Do We Go?

Don’t you pay attention to Buford? He told you I’m from Maryland. And he’s always right. After all, he’s got sources. Just like yours
Apologies, cpo pottymole. When I learned you resided in the "Washington DC area" (which is, for the record, 70% surrounded by safer Maryland suburbs) ...

&*%!$ &$@##, a University of New Hampshire (UNH) alumnus from the Class of ****, currently resides in the Washington DC area.

... I gave you the benefit of the doubt and assumed you'd be doing better than actually residing in the he11scape that is DC. I absolutely stand corrected.

Now, taking you at your word and noting your proclivity at criticizing those of us who prefer the NH quality of life, I'm forced to share further details which seriously call into question your judgment as to risks you have decided to personally undertake to pursue your "livelihood" ...

Based on 2024–2025 data, Washington DC and NH represent opposite ends of the US safety spectrum. DC has one of the highest crime rates in the country, often ranking first among all states and districts in violent crime. Conversely, NH consistently ranks among the top two safest states in the US.

Crime Stats Comparison

  • Violent Crime Rate: In 2023, NH had a violent crime rate of 107 per 100,000 residents, 71% lower than the national average. As of 2024–2025, DC reported a violent crime rate of approximately 999.8 to 1,006 per 100,000 people, which is nearly 10 times higher than NH's rate.
  • Property Crime Rate: In 2023, NH's property crime rate was 54% lower than the national average. DC saw 49,033 property offenses in 2024, representing a significant volume of crime, particularly in vehicle theft.
  • NH ranks #1 in Public Safety and #2 in low violent crime rates, with very low rates of aggravated assault, homicide, and robbery.
  • Despite recent declines, DC has one of the highest robbery rates in the nation and a homicide rate in 2024 roughly six times higher than that of New York City.

    Data Reliability Warning
Reports in 2025 noted investigations into DC police over accusations of manipulating or altering crime data to make rates appear lower.

Borek CAN Coach...and in no way and I a MS7 apologist...I'm actually a former UConn season ticket holder who saw UNH as a role model program I hoped Uconn to aspire to their first few season in HE. I'm also friends with a former UNH player who transferred to UNH from BC. What I can say is this...if you want a guy like a Joe Dumais who knows what resources it takes to win then he needs to see those resources either in place or promised on paper. You may get lucky and find a guy who pulls a rabbit out of his hat utilizing the same resources MS7 has now...most likely it will not happen. NIL changed the game...good bad or indifferent.
Then I guess we should just accept our situation and plan accordingly...either follow and support what's in front of us or don't.
Not sure I can put anymore energy into this- is what it is.

He's probably on the UNH payroll to sow seeds of doubt for the hoi polloi that populate this page
This is a "yes and no" answer in all fairness, as cpo pottymole's position is generally a volunteer position, much like that of the much-ballyhooed 3rd assistant coach's position for UNH Men's Hockey at present. Maybe our hero's logic is if UNH can fund a 3rd assistant coach salary, maybe they can fund his role, too?!?

Then who are you? Conversations could be more meaningful if we understood who you were and who your sources were.
cpo pottymole's "sources" are the folks in T-Hall who got us into this mess in the first place, and aren't about to fall on their collective swords admitting it lol.

Oh, that and the guy who got smoked on his own podcast by his own kid this past Fall, and pretends to be an "insider" when all he does is just trades on info which he gets from the folks at the programs he compliantly runs interference for. Yup. That's all there is, I'm afraid. The emperor/cpo has no clothes.

I feel your pain...walked away from 18 yrs as a season ticket holder/athletic dept booster for UConn football/5 yr UConn hockey season ticket holder/booster after they went back to the Big East. I still follow both teams but not like I did..I have never stepped foot at a game since.

The fact you don’t know what’s going on inside the program but profess to have sources is laughable.
What is truly laughable is you equate the funding of a 3rd assistant and a few updated exercise machines to being difference-makers for a program that has known nothing but losing for over a decade. Millions have been spent on addressing previous MS7 excuses. Pardon us for not calling this out as yet another baseless excuse.

Now I’m in Washington DC!!!! lol. Well then I must be, right? But what if you’re wrong, as you ALWAYS are?

Well would you look at that..down goes #1! Congrats RENCEB!!
Thanks HockeyRef! You may have heard some "F Bombs" dropped when PC floated in that tying goal. Thought 'Mack might fold, but they pushed back hard. Terrific goal by Hoskin (not Hoskins ;)) to win it in OT.
Borek has them locked in right now. 4-0-1 in their last 5, and Lundgren is playing very well in net. They have WAY more skill (all underclassmen) than they have had in a while.
UMass and Hrabel will be a tall task (literally, Hrabel is is 6'7") but I know that MC can hang with them.

Hey Potty, you may group Merrimack in the bottom tier of HE along with UVM, UNH and UMass Lowell, but MC certainly looks to be headed to the middle of the pack at the very least. Remember, they finished 2nd a couple of years ago. Not sure you can say the same for any of the other 3 (sorry UNH).

I am in no way a MS7 apologist Chuck...thought you were smarter than that...also thought you knew how to use Google a bit BUT guess you cant do that either...I'll give you the staff for your boy Mike Cavanaugh at UConn to help you out a bit:
Head Coach: Your buddy Mike
Associate Head Coach (paid asst spot) Tyler Helton
Associate Head Coach (paid Asst spot) Nick Peruzzi
Assistant Coach (paid Asst spot) Alex Westlund
-Note: Alex replaced the original 3rd paid Asst Vince Stiletti who left to become the goalie coach Coachella Firebirds in the AHL...Stiletti was promoted form volunteer assistant to full time paid assistant in Sept 2023. The NCAA approved the 3rd Assistant in July. 2023 for the 2023-2024 season.
Director of Hockey Operations Jacob Paluch
You shouldn't take this stuff personally, FDNY99. My point is that a 3rd paid assistant is the least of MS7's worries, and whether a 3rd assistant is paid or is a volunteer is 99% of the time not likely to move the needle, especially if the guy running the ship isn't qualified. UConn did pick up Westlund after he got fired by the Red Wings. Make of that what you will. As a PS to your previous post, please give my regards to Todd, who was an important piece to UNH's road to glory a generation ago.

Apparently one of the meatheads that post here started harassing McMahon. McMahon addressed it on Twitter. He confirmed Merrimack has more funding than UNH and a paid third assistant. So UNH is one of the two programs with the least financial support on Hockey East.

That's an incredibly weak deflection, even by your weak "standards". If you're lucky, maybe 0.01% of the posters on here will fall for it. Keep digging, chumley.

I mean, I'm happy to keep gradually rolling out more details of who you are, if you want to foolishly challenge me??

That makes it even worse if the guy running the ship doesnt know how to steer it....the issue with the paid vs volunteer status...the volunteer cant recruit...he can only instruct. UNH would be better off giving Torts a "Asst" title so at least he can recruit in addition to his DHO duties. I dont take your dislike of Cavanaugh personally at all...I think he has run his course at UConn and they are who they are...a team that spits the proverbial bit down the stretch season after season and 2nd/3rd place finishes are tolerated. They also dont have the $$ to buy him out with what he makes now so he stays..probably on the perpetual extension train. I do think it's time for Helton to move on...losing Joe P to BU hurt the trajectory of the program BUT the resources are there in both coaching salary and NIL $$ for the day the job opens to draw a good group of candidates. Will do on the last.

Dragging McMahon’s name is deeply embarrassing. Mike’s coverage of college hockey is unparalleled in breadth, his newsletter is a great read. Shouldn’t be talked about this way for simply providing his take on the program.

So now you are defending not only the least successful HC in recent HEA history, but now also the most lightweight of "media" personalities. Kudos lol 😂😂

Last time I checked, both of these men are grown adults, and should be able to fend for themselves in public. You truly are a megalomaniac, dude ...

Souza would never allow Tortorella to become his assistant, and Jimmy T. probably wouldn't want to be more closely associated with the train wreck that is happening under MS7. It rarely works when one of the assistants is smarter, more capable and more experienced than an insecure head coach. As more than myself have posted on here recently, asking Jimmy T. to step in for a transitional year while putting MS7 on gardening leave (if he can't be bought out) next season is a viable option IF Tortorella is willing to take that role on? At his age and at this stage of his career, the answer to that is anything but a certain yes.

If its too much for the school to spend to buy him out...guess you guys have to hope there is no extension and they both agree to part ways...or at the least UNH tells him thanks we are moving on. It's probably better that they set up a budget and start spooling up the $$ train next year and id their candidates. Another year may alienate you guys as a fanbase but introducing that plan and a LEGIT HC search should bring everyone back and renew interest in the program. If it can happen with UConn football it can happen anywhere.

I'm not here to devalue what it is that you enjoy, so knock yourself out, and by all means, continue to subscribe. But ultimately, it is only his opinion, and he's not any more qualified as an outside observer who trades on his media access with coaching staffs to run interference for his sources when asked, than many of us are.

MM's opinion would immediately take on more gravitas if he also pointed out that previous MS7 excuses were granted - not insignificant ones BTW - and as has been pointed out on here by many others other than myself, the program is still moored to the bottom of the league.

In 2023-2024 Mike McMahon noted the "tremendous work" MS7 had done with UNH. He thought the "contact length makes sense".

These opinions aged well.
