I remember as a student you had to wait sometimes for 60-90+ minutes before they opened the doors (which they typically did an hour before game time) to get prime seats in the student section. For the Maine games that waiting time would go up dramatically. Not sure if that is the case anymore…... and thus in less than a generation, UNH Hockey goes from the hottest ticket in the state, with thousands of folks waiting patiently in line for table scraps, to an absolute afterthought. No more sellouts ... no more wait list ... no more Friends of Hockey ... no fawning media ... a lost generation of potential UNH fans, either scattered to the wind or blissfully unaware of what was once arguably the best fan experience in all of Northern New England, right in their back yard. Sad.
And for every Dale or Greg or Karen or Josh or Matt or Ernie (RIP) who posted on here about walking away due to the U's ambivalence, there are dozens if not hundreds who simply disappear in silence. You only notice when they arrive as an empty seat where there once had only been filled seats.
I went to my first Bentley game (and I'm an alum) last March in Manch with Snives, and they almost beat BC with all the chips in the middle of the table. Looks like Bentley might be making the really big tourney (touch wood) again this Spring. Other well-known folks on this board are exploring this and other options.
If you don't take care of your customer and show 'em they're valued, then someone else surely will. This is not a cold political calculation, as some here would have you believe. Life is too short to invest time, money and emotions into something that just can't be bothered to reciprocate, i.e. put a competitive team on the ice.
Our "new" AD isn't new anymore. The current extension was her idea. It's been an absolute fail, right out of the gate. No more hiding. It's on you now, AD Rich ...
Whil I agree with your thoughts on the AD, I think she made a bad bet on MS7 that has backfired on her that may be explained to her not looking holistically at the situation.
Taking a trip down memory lane, She started in the summer of 2022, and her first season watching MS7 was bad (I believe they had over 20 losses in 22-23).
She then decided to move on from one coach during her first year (Herrion, whom I do not remember what his contract situation was). Souza meanwhile, significantly improved in the second year (20 wins) and then got the contract extension.
Then, another bad year, and this one (thus far) hasn’t looked to good either. Unfortunately I think she didn’t look at the larger body of work with MS7 and perhaps thought the “blip” of 23-24 was a turning point, while now it appears to be moreso an anomaly, powered mostly by a strong rookie season by Conmy, and a transfer Goalie who stole probably 4-5 games down the stretch.
So all in all, I agree she isn’t new to the job anymore, and she made the wrong decision to extend Souza in 2024. We all make mistakes, and I’m HOPING she realizes she is responsible for this mistake, and takes action to correct it. She has a much larger body of work to draw from now - mostly under her watch.
I’m hoping with her added experience the last few years, she now has the wherewithal to make the right decision at the right time this go around.
Perhaps she is also feeling a bit of added pressure as her replacement for basketball hasn’t shown significant improvement, and the alumni soccer coach has moved on to greener pastures with increased success while the current program has stagnated, and now she may be worried the same could happen with Santos moving on from football after this past fall…
It’s up to MS7 and team to make her decision more difficult over the next 6 weeks…
