UNH- How Far West Do We Go?

How did that second NU goal count? Looked like the guy ran into Whale, causing the puck to go in. Not sure if there was a better view they saw or not, but it didn’t look too convincing to me…

Looks like they didn't come out for the 2nd period again. It seems to me (both the results and watching them play) they have significantly regressed since being hot in early December. More practice time is not helping, again.

Playing like this where are you finding wins:
2 vs BC
2 vs. Merrimack (who seems to owns you)
2 vs BU
3 vs PC
3 vs Umass
1 vs Uconn

1-3 to start the year... 13 games to go - 2-12-3 again isn't off the table.

Ms7 not happy about that...had a heated discussion with ref when they came out for the 2nd.

Boys are at least not folding despite two quick ones...was important to get that 2nd goal. I know that doesnt count but at least their compete level is better than Fri...fwiw dept.

58-96-22 HE record if we lose today...sigh.

Better effort there in the 3rd, but already in a hole too deep. Also dumb penalty by Oliver at the WORST possible time.

Terrible weekend overall. Averaging 1 goal per game is not gonna win you many games. Gotta bring the A++ effort against BC next weekend, or it could easily be another 2 L’s…

Because he was tripped by the UNH player and pushed into the goalie.
That’s fair. Looking back I can see that now. There was going to be a penalty for the tripping anyways.

Tough game for Whale, although he really wasn’t getting much help from his defense. I wonder if that is the last time we see him in a UNH uniform…

Most likely. I was glad to.see him but it had to be hard with so few games...anyway...onto BC cant wait...

That didn't take very long, did it? Hopefully Jimmy T. is readying our AD f/k/a SB to make the decision we all know now needs to be made, sooner than later.

While I agree it is likely time to move on from MS7, do we trust the AD to make the right decision on hiring the new coach? The process for hiring the new football coach didn’t inspire a lot of confidence in me, and I think former coach Mac played a HEAVY hand with picking Goldrich, despite his never being a HC prior, even an OC/DC… I didn’t really buy in to the “national search” that was supposedly undertaken. I would be really interested to hear who else was on that “list”, if it is ever released (likely we will never find out). Don’t get me wrong, I wish Goldrich all the best, as I have some very fond memories watching him lead UNH football to some of their best years in recent time. Still, I find it hard to believe there weren’t more qualified candidates with a longer track record as coaches.

If the same logic follows with hockey, I presume Umile would be leaned on heavily to help with this process, and I think he again would look to one of his former players. The closest that comes to mind is Ayers, who has been with BC for 12-13(?) years now, and also had coaching experience before then. Not sure of any other UNH alumni in the coaching field (at any level) but I think that would be the lowest hanging fruit to pick from.

In the meantime, I can only hope the ship can be righted ASAP. BC looms large next weekend…

As to all this "week" vs "weak" stuff... for those who weren't around the BC Pinheads "Rookie of the Weak" was never a BC player because it was to pick on some other teams highly touted recruit to note how poorly (weak) they were playing. It was pretty entertaining, I seem to recall UNH and BU were the most common targets.
And to elaborate, Rookie of the Weak was part of a spin on Milk Carton Missing Kids by a BC pinhead poster whose screen name was something like BobF, IIRC. Maybe Nick P will clarify.

It was good to see the team respond to the timeout, but a lot too late. This team is not good enough to go down 4-1 and comeback.

This team needs to play basic hockey. Make good passes, break out of the zone and control the puck. When they did this later in the game they had sustained pressure that resulted in a ton of A+ changes, just had some bad puck luck and did not get the bounces.

They can't be curling around the net and trying to make moves out front, which was the demise of this game when Oliver did that. Also our D is slow, the 2 on 1's given up last night were plentiful and this hung Whale out to dry. None of the goals were his fault and I believe the switch was a team message not an indication on his play.

And probably the most infuriating thing of the night was the NU student section who were in the lower section just off of the UNH bench and stood the entire game. That meant anyone in two sections behind the bench could not see half the zone. I get Walter Brown is a dump and small but there were plenty of sections 100% open where they could have stood and not blocked everyone's view. At least tickets were free

Sad indeed ... yet somehow, I am not surprised, the appalling lack of generational legacies from prior UNH players' families continues unabated, and this is not something we can saddle only MS7 with. Same was the case during most (all?) of the Umile Era. Not sure it went as far back as Charlie Holt's time though ...
UNH does have a terrible record of getting brothers of, sons of or relatives of their better players, with a few exceptions like the Van R's and Hemingway's. Not saying Sadowski was a top tier player in his day, but just to break (or is that brake Potsie?) the cycle, just give his son a place on the team and see what happens.

Going back to the Holt days, don't forget that Andy Brickley's brother Quintin ended up in Durham. Had 51 points over his 4 year career and some minor league stops. He did/does like to play mercenary sniper/scorer in many a greater boston men's leagues.

Now I am wondering if that start precludes Whale coming back as a red shirt next season, if that were ever a possibility?

Yeah, I suspect that ship has sailed, if ever there was a ship to be sailed on this issue. Trying to track MS7's roster construction planning certainly hasn't been an easy task, and I get that things have changed in recent years. Gone are the days of Umile and Lassonde's goalie conveyor belt with regular intervals, that's for sure.

Sometimes you get what you pay for. My guess is this wouldn't have rankled so much if UNH actually was competitive last night. C'est la vie.
