UNH- How Far West Do We Go?

UNH finds a way to grind out a split weekend. It seems to be what they do best this season.

Luce will do and/or say something snarky to or about MS7, who (staying completely in character) will turtle and not respond.

Neither UNH nor UConn will be putting any meaningful new hockey hardware in their respective trophy cases come April ...
Your prediction “aged well,” Chuck.

Maybe Luce’s arrogance led to his benching Muszelik, which could cost Yukon big time for an at-large bid at season’s end?

Meanwhile, did da Whale just earn another start against your alma mater next Saturday in Waltham?

Sign Souza! What a comeback against a great UConn team* (in spite of their coach). Seriously, re-up Souza!
* - in this instance, this is what you call an oxymoron, which is defined as follows:

noun

1. a figure of speech in which apparently contradictory terms appear in conjunction (e.g. jumbo shrimp, military intelligence, etc.)

UConn Men's Hockey has never won a title of any significance, ever. The highlight of the UConn Men's Hockey program's history was winning something by the name of "CT Ice Tourney" in early 2025, an in-state tournament involving other D-1 programs from CT including three time winners Quinnipiac, and one time winners Sacred Heart in the inaugural event (2020). UConn has a 1-3 record in 4 trips to the CT Ice finals. The only team not to have won CT Ice is currently Yale.

great (adjective)

1. of an extent, amount, or intensity considerably above average;
2. of ability, quality, or eminence considerably above average

In short, there is nothing remotely approaching "great" associated with the UConn Men's Hockey program. Hence, "great UConn team" is an oxymoron.

Not to be confused with the original poster, who is just a plain moron.

Good talk ...

Merci beaucoup, Snives. You are a prince among the rest of us mere mortals.

If we're being honest here ... Mucinex isn't good enough where he should be guaranteed starts. Good, kinda yes? Great, not even close.

That will be an interesting call. The Whale Watch just got a whole lot more interesting. A W over the alma mater, and UNH is back in the rarefied air of .500. 🏆

You left out that Yukon’s on-campus rink (Tuscano Family Form, but apparently it has a world-class weight room), built on the cheap by frugal Univ. Connecticut admin, seats only 2600, a mere 50 more than Lawler at Merrimack, which BTW has a great men’s hockey head coach, but still 400 fewer seats than Schneider at PC, which BTW also has a great men’s hockey head coach.
Toscano pissed off a lot season ticket holders who were left out due to the lack of capacity. When I go there it seems a lot less than 2600 and you can get hurt if you accidentally fall off the edge in some seating areas near the corners. Parking is free if you don't mind walking from the free lot which is up the road and if that's full, you can park further up from one of the nearby dorms which has more parking spots.

I rather go to the XL Center where the Whalers used to play. Plus there are restaurants and bars around the XL.

Gutsy win by the boys last night. Truthfully, I felt it was over after the shorthanded goal by CT in the second to make it 3-1. Nice to see Newcombe shine. My guess is MS7 will rotate the goalies during back-to-back moving forward. They cleaned up the penalties (comes from coaching) and continue to play hard throughout. This is a fun group to root for. Lavins will make a big difference on the front end when he returns.

One thing that stood out to me over the past 2 weeks is what a leader Nick Ring has become in the absence of Marty Lavins...

Echoing the sentiments that this bunch is capable...guys like Philbrick and Carr stand out as well. Good to see JP Turner and Newcomb get goals..real turning point. Who among us didnt think it was going to be another disappointing Saturday night?!?

Regardless of the fact that UCONN dropped the puck in the 3rd it was great to see UNH take advantage of it and ran with it. Hopefully it gives the team some confidence going forward...Bentley is not to be ignored and Maine..goes without saying.

So does Jared Whale begin a tandem with Chauvette? Am still wondering what happened to Coombs being the starter last night according to the posted line sheets?

I have no words. Not sure what happened tonight but somehow MS7 will get an extension out of this.
We are a year / season away from his contract expiring with plenty of hockey to be played... Hey if he comes through he comes through. If he doesn't?

Doubt it makes a ton of difference...
I mean hate to say it but he's 6 losses away from losing 💯 HE games. Somehow...that will not matter. There's more to winning/losing games at UNH it's obvious...

Seems like a moot point hardly worth speculating about. Just IMHO.

....miss the barbeque at the XL lol...have only been once but you are right about the walk. But at least you get to see the facilities the tax payers of CT have built lol..

One more point about the game last night..glad I wasnt there to hear that loud mouth losing it for 15 minutes after that UConn penalty...haha

I thought the third period was one of the best I've seen all season. Team speed, great backcheck support, a lot less puck watching/chasing than the first 2 periods. Good structure and tenacity (without penalties), everything contested. Looked like the higher the tempo, the better the passing became with some really nice breakout and center zone transition. A few surprised me, actually...like "where the hell did that come from?!" That period was really fun to watch. Its how they need to be.

What I didn't like in the first two periods was how UNH wings sagged into the D zone along the wall. CT points had a lot of room to operate far too often. This seemed to tighten up in the third.

And I'll say it again, Alex Carr is going to be one of the best D we've seen in a while. His reliability (small sample) reminds me some of how Garrett Stafford played...always in position marking a man, nice outlet passes. Stable

As for B. Fitzgerald, I've always been 50/50 on him. Last night he was more liability than help, IMHO...

Hopefully we get Lavins back for the maine weekend. He'll just need to be careful of the incoming slashing, cuz, well, you know...its maine.

Happy for da Whale. Must be tough ridin da pine for so long.

Heading into the series with UNH at Alfond has me feeling like Maine can’t truly lose. Either Maine sweeps UNH and gets points needed and it’s business as usual when these two teams play on each other’s ice…. OR UNH gets a win and it will be enough for an extension of a couple more years. If UNH sweeps look out, Souza would be firmly entrenched for 5 years at least! 🤣 The funniest part is there may be some truth to this absurdity. 🙂

You should root for a UNH sweep using that logic :ROFLMAO:

I’d be fine with a split. This would tack on a year or two. Kind of kick the can down the road while continuing to milk the UNH faithful until there is no spirit or enthusiasm or monetary support at all. I would use the term quantitative easing, but that nifty marketing term is already in use. We will have to think of something clever to fleece the common hockey folk into thinking this is a good thing for them. 🤔

Hes not up for renewal until 2027...
