UNH- How Far West Do We Go?

Edit - it was a shootout win according to the ME thread. Not sure why the scoreboard said 51.8 if so, but I trust their recap over my sleuthing skills. Either way, not a bad start. Will be interested in any further insight regarding lines and newcomers from those in attendance…

I was at the game and UNH dominated Maine! The new boys for the most part came as advertised. Sam Oliver’s goal was a laser. Marty Lavins, was hands down the best player on the ice. Maine’s top goalie saved a blow out. Carr, Fitzy, Cy, Newcombe, Ring, Gagne, and Macdonald stood out to me. Surprised that Chauvette was the number one but he looked good. The other surprise was Captain Winters dressed but didn’t play. They looked strong the entire game. Very excited to see this group develop!! (Forever Optimistic)!

Didn't look like there were that many UNH fans there? This coming weekend will be a big test to see how they hold up against a major program/team. I'll be in the throes of a brand new knee and will be watching from the ice machine haha. EEEK!!!

All UNH fans need to circle November 29th on their calendars. Bentley has put up eight goals against two so far vs SFU in Waltham this evening.

For fans of JvR who might be wondering how his time with DRW has been going ... in large part due to the birth of twins, one of whom needed some extra time in the hospital, he has only started to practice with the team late last week, and missed the team's entire eight game preseason slate. In a post-game interview this weekend, head coach Todd McLellan indicated JvR was not likely to be playing in any regular season games for the next 2-3 weeks at least, and may not get into game action until November. In the meantime, several of the Wings' vaunted group of developing younger players have stepped up during training camp, and there are still 2-3 would-be rookie forwards in the mix to make the Opening Night roster, while JvR labors to get himself into game shape.

More than a few fans have raised the question as to why Yzerman bothered to sign JvR in the first place, and even wondering if he'll ever end up playing for the Winged Wheel. For a team that is increasingly committed to pulling through some of their best young talents to move out placeholder types who were signed to cover the rebuilding transition from down to the studs to waiting for permanent occupants, JvR is looking very much like the wrong guy at the wrong time. Stay tuned ...

I was there as well and agree on everything you said here. Though only an exhibition, I think it was very important for UNH to play well, and they did. It was odd that Chauvette played the entire 60 minutes. Heading out to MSU on Wednesday, hopefully the same UNH team shows up!

Funny Mr. HR was just asking me where JvR was playing this season and I wasn't sure...I didn't hear about the birth of their twins! TvR just became a dad of a daughter a few weeks back...lots of vR news it seems these days. I think JvR is a decent addition to be honest; he always seems to bring some value even in limited roles. Sure newbies deserve their shot and I'm sure the 'dead wings' :LOL: will find room for them. Of course, being a Bruins fan I really shouldn't say bad things about another team. Interesting that Patrick Kane and JvR are playing together given their draft history...

Thanks for the update about JvR, even if you found a way to down play him...again. ;)

UPDATE: JvR was NOT on the Red Wings' 23 man roster, which was released today. There can be (and often is) some movement after the roster deadline, with lots of waiver activity, most of which looks to have cleared today. JvR also was not assigned to Grand Rapids, nor did he appear on any injury list, so he seems to be in a limbo like the NFL's "physically unable to perform (PUP)" list, while he tries to catch up fitness-wise with the rest of his new teammates.

They did put two defensemen on waivers yesterday, but neither was claimed - Holl ($3.0M) will probably accept his demotion to GR (AHL) because no one ever is likely ever gonna pay him that much again, and he's on the last year of his deal. Gustafson ($2.0M) is in the same boat, may ask for a release to play in his native Sweden.

Bad year for any DRW forward to miss camp, as Yzerman's youth movement is finally in full flow. In addition to D Axel Sandin-Pellikka, another 1st round pick Michael Brandsegg-Nygard looks like he will step into a middle six role, and could be a surprise contender for the Calder Trophy, while a 7th round Yzerman pick Emmit Finnie is the surprise of camp, and may start the season on the top line. JvR's best shot at a slot by November might be if it turns out too early for Finnie (a real possibility) who needs more seasoning. But even so, there are other young guys who'd be battling for that open slot, including former #1 pick Berggren (a suspect at this point of his career), and more recent #1 pick Nate Danielson (a definite prospect), who'd have made the roster but for his injury.

There are a couple of other pluggers on the bottom six who are susceptible, but might be difficult to move due to too-hefty contracts (Rasmussen/Compher), and likely also will clear waivers, so JvR's current situation is very much in flux, and might depend on a lot of bad breaks involving other players. Stay tuned ...
