UNH Hockey: Where Do We Go From Here....

Re: UNH Hockey: Where Do We Go From Here....

The President, Vice President, Speaker of the House of Representatives should be tested EVERY day. If one tests positive then the next person in the presidential line of succession should be added to the daily testing protocol. Everyone entering the White House should have their temperature checked. The President should maintain distance from people and for the love of gawd stop shaking hands with everyone he presents during is MC duties. Set an example ferchrissakes.

Stock piling 40 pounds of meat, hundreds of canned goods, dozens of rolls of TP is excessive, but treating this as a two week power outage is reasonable. When we look back on this, I will take being labelled overcautious if this turns out to be "the flu cold". On the other hand, I'll smile inside if labeled a prudent planner who was ahead of the caution curve that everyone SHOULD have adopted.

I am sad we have missed out on Souza's season ending press conference. It at least provides some bigger picture perspective on where they see things.
I wonder if the virus issue will alter some of the decisions by recruits if they have the option of playing another year of juniors close to home (liek Ardanaz) rather than going accross the country closer to where the virus will have spread.

Agree with your points; esp about treating this with caution. There are still so many unknowns. We have no idea about the scope of this but if you look at NY (New Rochelle) you can see the trend if we do not heed the social distancing warnings. Not to mention testing is needed and let's hope they will get those 'drive up' sites available. What is really needed is a rapid test; one that gives the results quickly. Think that's either here now, or , coming. Our school district has decided to have no kids tomorrow, so that we teachers can plan for a shut down (which I believe is imminent) Kids come tues-Frday. Already reading on fbook posts from my community that some parents will keep their kids home. That's going to be interesting; I could be teaching 3 kids in a class of 20 all week. OR...it gets shut down we'll see. Interesting times, for sure!

Ps On another note, I miss hockey. :(

Group Think occurs when individual thinking is undermined to stay within the comfort zone of the consensus. Dissent by group members may be discouraged and unquestioned belief in the group's competence surfaces. I encountered this phenomena in mountaineering. It shows up when the weather turns bad, or the avalanche/crevasse threat increases, or when members of the climbing team show symptoms of altitude sickness. Diverse opinions occur concerning whether to turn back or keep climbing.

Arguments can take place surrounding what to do and if the conversation deteriorates then opinions concerning fortitude and irresponsibility surface. Should the decision be made to climb or retreat. There is a potential for error in either decision. In the end it comes down to which error a person is willing to make. In hypothesis testing they call it a Type I or a Type II error. Do you want to head down and risk not gaining the summit, or do you want to head up and risk personal injuries, particularly on the subsequent descent.

I suspect there are similarities in operation during this CoVid 19 pandemic. Which error do you want to make? Do you want to believe that social isolation is warranted and it is not foolish behavior fueled by risk aversive individuals, or do you want to believe that social isolation is unwarranted and it is foolish behavior fueled by risk aversive individuals?

In a perfect world all mountaineers make the right decision and all return alive. In a perfect world.
Good post Sonar. Disappointed you made no reference to SAGE though;):)

Manch schools closed for 2 weeks!

It is SO weird not having the best part of the season. Kind of like walking into a room during a power outage and reflexively flipping the light switch, I keep thinking there are games to watch. Wait, no? Well then there must be softball! No? Baseball then. No? Golf? No? Really???

I get it. I agree with it, but is is strange.

Re: UNH Hockey: Where Do We Go From Here....

… treating this as a two week power outage is reasonable.

Oh Darius … if only I believed this would be a "two week" period.

The rush for everyone - regardless of circumstances - to shut down was driven largely by the fear of being the lone folks out on an island that decided to follow a different course. Looking ahead, and this is a very serious question: Who is going to decide when enough is enough, and we get to go back to life as we normal? Or is everyone going to be looking on, waiting for someone else to take that perilous first step, take the risk of criticism (and it will be vicious - like any dissent is handled right now), and then jump in behind them? I think I know the answer, but won't say here.

The die has been cast on the current direction. The NBA situation arose last Tuesday night, so the two week window for some will be approaching in just over a week's time - what's going to happen then? I don't see a lot of reason for hope that folks who were so quick to follow the leader, and shut their businesses down, are going to be eager to step out from behind the cover of "safety" and urge folks to return to normal. Think about it. I don't see it happening anytime soon.

The power of precedent is huge. So, welcome to the latest of the "new normals", folks ...

Re: UNH Hockey: Where Do We Go From Here....

I should have written "treating this as a series of two week power outages". At the end of two weeks another two weeks may begin. The idea is to limit public exposure. Shop every two weeks instead of weekly. I am taking the cautious approach in two week intervals until we have a handle on what we are dealing with. Like post-911, "normal" ain't coming back.

Re: UNH Hockey: Where Do We Go From Here....

I think the NH public schools shutting down / going online is a bit premature. I think it is being driven by the Universities which have a good reason, spring break and students going all over. Universities started announcing plans and somebody said (potentially breathlessly) what about or kids and going to school and we were off to the races.

Sorry, from a teacher point of view, I can't agree...I think you can't be too careful. I am already reading on my towns FBook page that parents are already planning to keep their kids OUT of school. I had a lot of absenteeism even this past Friday...not sure if it was related to C-19? We have to do something. If we didn't, then we'd take the heat for not doing something. It's almost a no win situation that schools have to make the best of...and the amount of work and planning, hoping that you can reach all kids (even those without technology at home, and, believe it or not, there are plenty of them right in my own school). Lots of unanswered questions for me...I go into this with only the 'blizzard bag' experience which if this pans out like that, prob 80% of the work will be done. Not easy. But, necessary.

These kids could pick it (C19) up at school and bring it home to vulnerable persons. Heck, being in the risk factor group as far as age, that's ME! Anyway...you won't know till you know, and this is uncharted territory for everyone...and creates a lot of concerns (rightly so) for parents and schools. Flexibility is the key here. I'm spending tomorrow without students so I can try to get together a semblance of online learning (which I am not worried about doing) working without the knowledge of when we are going to close, not if which is hopefully going to be answered shortly...

One thing that I heard today watching the Sunday shows that we as a country need to have something in place before these inevitable things crop up. C19 will not be the last of it...lessons learned from the past are valuable. Saw today how social distancing worked in 1918...and think about it, penicillin was still 10 years away from being created! This stuff is very cool for the health teacher here!

I am not, never was, a Fox News guy, but they used to do a very good job when actually reporting actual news. Sheppard Smith resigning was the last straw. Done, except for toggling back and forth with MSNBC when I want the feeling of being in two different countries without leaving the couch.

Agreed, but there's no way of stopping the stampede now, JB. We're in full blown panic mode.

The reptilian groupthink has absolutely kicked in, and any logic and reason is out the window.

The mirage of "safety", and the fear of getting caught out, are very tough opponents to overcome.

I guess the UK quarantining those in the high risk category (70+ with issues) isn't "safe" enough.

BTW the US death toll (all over the risk age) is up to 63, from 40 just 3 days ago. 7.7 per day.

See you guys again in time for Fourth of July … maybe. Or Labor Day, or … :(

Full blown caution with some over reaction and a little bit of panic.

"Now, look — I’ve got THIS to say, and I’m gonna SAY it: Why am I up here wasting MY valuable time telling you this? To tell you the truth, I’d rather be out smoking hash in the street!! I could be out smoking hash in the street! But, nooooooooooo! I gotta be here and show you lame-os because an informed public is the only hope we have if we want to smoke hash in the street!!" - J. Belushi 11/04/78

In the alternate universe logical reason seems to be on the increase.

No, it is not.

Precisely.

Is that a promise or a threat? :D

The preventable deaths of 7.7 strangers per day - an exponential increase likely to continue. But you can’t watch hockey and buy toilet paper so **** ‘em am I right....

Soon it will be ten a day. Then more. And **** them too, because Chuck Murray, staunch libertarian can’t abide free people are acting in a way he disagrees with when the cost is only 7.7 innocent victims...

That sort of response doesn’t make you sound the least bit intelligent. It makes you sound like a condescending, selfish and despicable scumbag. You want to stop being treated like a soft, easily offended, self-absorbed and pathetic little man stop acting like one. You’re so desperate to impress upon us what kind of man you are, stop acting in complete disagreement with what you all want us to believe and maybe you’ll finally fool us...

Nice to see your ‘thirst for debate’ in action - slinking out of the on topic thread, to return here to your safe space, yet pretending not to see Watcher politely posterize you. Twice. Don’t worry, the rest of us saw it and saw you tuck tail, Ill equipped...

Save me the topic dodging, sanctimonious speech on name calling and disrespect. As always, you’ll get exactly what you put out in the world back from me. You act disrespectful, I’ll keep disrespecting you. And unlike you, I’m not desperate to win a USCHO PR campaign so I don’t care how it looks. And I actually believe what I say, so I’m not afraid to say it for fear of looking overmatched as you are...

Lemme guess Darius, you think Mayor Pete is a moderate and F Chuck Todd is a moderate too?!?

Is it possible Chuck is trolling his "home" thread?

Probably, in many instances, but that doesn’t give him a pass for the shallow manner in which he trolls...

Did you not notice how after immediately after lecturing me on decorum and his thirst for open debate he entirely ignored Watcher’s on topic and polite post to debate global manufacturing? He doesn’t have the courage or the intellect to actually debate - he’s in perpetual spin mode doing his service to the party...

His objective is never to debate or learn but to do his ‘duty’.

He counts on other people being better than him - and me - so he can spout whatever nonsense he desires with minimal pushback. And he especially counts on it here where he thinks familiarity will give him safe passage. Yet, his willful ignorance, disingenuous behavior and and selfishness is explicitly harmful to others - mainly strangers he doesn’t give a second thought - so why should I treat him with any level of respect or decorum? Just because he demands it while not exhibiting it towards anyone else...

No chance.
