UNH Hockey Off Season Thread 2026

Agreed, very interesting but hardly surprising (more on that later). FWIW I think MS7 is professionally "dead man walking" at UNH, barring a sensational turnaround - i.e. way better than his sole winning season - so I'm not sure if any 20-year-old freshman has the ability to turn this barge around. We know there will be a new AD making a decision on Souza now, and replacing the HC of a long-floundering flagship Men's Hockey program, working on an expiring deal, is the lowest possible of all low hanging fruit for whomever that might be. Look at what our outgoing AD did to Bill Herrion in similar circumstances a few short years ago.

AD Rich isn't leaving without an extension being offered to her for doing a bang-up job (assuming she's nailed the compliance stuff) with on-field results. She got hornswoggled by Souza for a 3-year extension few of us thought was deserved. The move to replace Herrion was understandable, but his replacement has since squandered whatever modest progress Herrion had made with a historically abysmal Hoops program. She had two relatively young alums walk out for greener pastures in Football and Soccer, with the latter being the most successful UNH HC since Coach Umile, AND a Durham townie on top of that. She fell short of the mark, and now UNH will try to correct course.

If we see any of the three (Souza, Davis and Weinrebe) still in situ in Titletown 2 years from now, color me shocked, and do feel free to remind me of this prediction.

I think we already know how NHL teams view UNH in terms of developing players. At the very least, Coach Umile was viewed as a "safe pair of hands" by the NHL front offices/scouts, as there would be a steady if modest stream of AHL caliber players, several of whom would go on to decent pension-earning careers in The Show. And NHL organizations weren't plucking his/their prospects out of the program early for the minors or directing them to other programs (see Conmy, Ryan). Currently, UNH players struggle under the MS7 regime struggle to establish themselves at even the AHL level, and most end up flailing in the Coast or overseas in low level Euro leagues. It's also questionable (perhaps even naive?) to assume high-level Juniors coaches are automatically an inferior option to an NCAA coach.

Like you, I won't claim any level of expertise on this issue. Dan (and others) will be better informed on whether signing his financials binds him to the school. Just guessing here, but if there is any level of restriction, it may prevent the player from trying to go to another school this year, but I doubt it would prevent him from opting out of his UNH commitment to play pro/return to his Juniors team. The NCAA is on a long losing streak when it comes to restricting player movement lol.

What I'm actually hearing here is the feedback of a pretty shrewd advisor, sending a clear signal to NHL teams thinking of drafting Tournas that he's open to whatever their preference might be. Smart way to maximize his draft potential. It definitely does NOT send the message that he's committed on principle to coming to UNH, and at this point, I'm downright doubtful we'll ever see him coming to Titletown. If he goes in the first 3 rounds, I can't imagine the drafting team wouldn't want him in their organization instead of at UNH. If he's fourth round or after (or undrafted), then yeah, maybe we'd see him, as he presses to develop and impress towards getting that ELC. But with him raising the possibility of staying put in QMJHL, I suspect UNH's chances are slim and none, and I think we see Slim ambling his way outta Durham.
Appreciate your comments, Chuck. Hopefully someone with more knowledge can chime in regarding his obligation to UNH and the impact of returning to juniors for another year. Another piece of this is that he is a bit older than others in the draft (20 years old) so perhaps the drafting team feels a bit more pressure to move him along more quickly compared to an 18 year old (especially if drafted by the end of R3).

If he does not end up at UNH this fall, the question then becomes how does MS7 pivot? If at all? Do they aggressively push along another prospect to matriculate this fall? Perhaps try and pluck a disgruntled player from another school who is being asked to return to juniors for one more year? (Max Gildon comes to mind in recent memory).

Whatever the case may be, I imagine Souza will be aggressive because of the points you brought up earlier (MS7 has to be thinking of Herrion in his current situation…). Given the imminent draft, perhaps we will get some more clarity on this in the coming few weeks…

Glad to see that Maine beat both UVM and UNH to the punch when it comes to athletic dept. transformations with new and renovated facilities. Maine has raised over $220 million in private donations for athletics over the past 5 yeWrs obviously driven by $170 million from the Alfond Foundation.....but still $50+ million from other sources is nothing to sneeze at. Here's the live construction cam for Maine's new $100 million Morse Arena (basketball + football operations center): https://share.earthcam.net/tJ90CoLm...maine_-_morse_arena/football_press_box/view_1
Wow.....impressive project. Thanks for posting it . Didnt realize the complex would be that big.

Hi all! Kind of behind the unh news..watched most of the draft last night. Naturally we don't have any 1st rounders but what about the later rounds?

Also will be at the July 9th barbecue to kick off the 'season of allll seasons' (MS7's final contract year?) . Be there or be square!!

Happy Summer to all!

Second round underway now, the rest of the draft thru Round 7 will wrap up later today.

Michigan State projected to have at least nine first round picks on its roster this coming season.

Get to the Whitt the third week of October if you can.

EDIT: Those of you watching the draft might have noticed that Vegas forfeited the 63rd pick, More damage to the franchise from a coach whose act has grown old.

Could not agree with you more, Felgie. It will be interesting to see what role (if any) his brother plays in the pivotal next 12+ months at UNH ...

Was talking g about this last night while watching. HR and her people will be there 🤣🤣🤣

Switching his commitment has already paid off for Henriquez, as the Bruins’ obsession with BC prospects leads to his selection at #170…
LOL!!

If Ronan Walsh went to BC Sweeney would draft him as well

Parker Von Richter, 111th overall to Pittsburgh

FWIW, Penguins traded up to select him.
WIS has now dubbed our latest draftee "PvR" to carry on the fabled vR lineage/legacy at UNH. I believe the Penguins traded up with the B's to pick him today.

4th round picks are usually flawed "hope and hit" picks at best. For a sloppy frame of reference, I believe Conmy was a 5th round pick by the Kings

In other news, Niko Tournas went undrafted. So much for his "I'm open to an organization who wants me to rethink plans (UNH) for next season" plea. Worst case scenario, with the draft window closed, he will lose motivation on developing his game and underperform at UNH. Best case, this spurs him to work even harder, and if he does develop his game, he'll eventually be a free agent type (like Krog) who can make a deal with anyone, with no draft rights restrictions or entanglements.

As I said the other day I think Niko "The Savior" Tournas and college are like oil and water.

And again, I hope I am wrong.

Congrats to “PvR” on being drafted by the Penguins! The fact they traded up for him seems that, despite being drafted in the 4th round, the Penguins certainly see something in him they like.

You mentioned our old friend Conmy as a similar draft range comp. I imagine many of us would be more than happy if we get two years of Conmy-like production out of PvR (taking into account PvR is defense, so maybe less goals, more assists and a greater +/-). Let’s all just hope that UNH as a whole is playing better by that time, so he doesn’t make a similar decision to bolt to Chestnut Hill…

A bit surprised to see Tournas going completely undrafted after media outlets had him going somewhere in the 3rd round around pick 80. Seems like an almost Shadeur Sanders level fall right there (for all you football fans out there). Let’s hope this lights a fire under him and he plays with a chip on his shoulder right out the gate. There have been many successful careers born from undrafted players (the current coach of the Canadians comes to mind).

With the results from the draft now in, I believe this coming season will be the most drafted players UNH has had on their roster in quite some time:

PvR (2026, 4th round)
Plandowski (2021, 5th round) - beyond 4 years…
McDonald (2021, 5th round) - beyond 4 years…
Vasse (2025, 3rd round)
Van Tassell (2023, 7th round)
Guité (2025, 5th round)

I can’t remember the last time UNH had 6 draft picks (4 with draft rights still). Having lots of draft picks doesn’t always translate to significant team success each year (look at BU this past year) but I’d say more often than not it signifies strong talent and playmaker potential. Souza is gonna need to find a way to channel success with these playmakers quickly if he wants to stick around to further their development…

Any comparison to the number of draft picks on roster is influenced by the admission of canadian junior players to college
Obviously record number of drafted players on all teams

That’s a good point - didn’t think about that. Hopefully it will raise the level of competition across D1 hockey. I’ll be curious to see if (eventually) teams like Denver, BU, BC, etc turn into having 85-90% of their players as draft picks, and if they rarely have any players stay for more than 3 years.

Perhaps some of these hockey blue bloods will start to have issues similar to basketball with more and more “one and done” guys. I think it would be hard to build a team using this philosophy giving the annual turnaround. Now with the transfer portal as well though, it may all get washed out in the end, with basically every team have significant turnover on a year to year basis…

I think Marty, Captain. A's go to Fitzy, Ring and Turner.
I agree on Marty with the C, and Fitzy and Turner with the A. In the recent past they have gone with a sophomore or Junior with an A, and I wouldn’t be surprised if an underclassmen grabs one of the assistant roles.

My bet would be Philbrick, a NH native and likely anchor on the 2nd D line with Carr.

I could also just see them going with two A’s instead of 3, which they have done in the past as well.
