UNH Hockey Off Season Thread 2026

Congrats to Denver on another Championship - taking the BIG10 down a notch after their string of success in the 2025-2026 school year.

Denver seems to be morphing into the Alabama of the 2010s in college hockey. Carle is perhaps another Nick Saban. Given his age, perhaps he will eventually get a shot at coaching in the NHL?

3 Nattys in 5 years, along with a 12-3 record in tournament play and a .694 overall win percentage will certainly get you noticed at the highest level.

To put into perspective, him and Souza both started in 2018, and Souza just surpassed 100 wins this year, while Carle surpassed 200…

Hopefully Souza was watching the game tonight and took good notes.

Now onto portal week!
Gee dont tell MM that coaching matters..very sore spot for him!! 🤣🤣🤣

I don’t think MS7 has really shown much apt with the portal. Outside of goalies (Hellsten and KC), who has he gotten that has made a significant difference? I can be convinced of Lindner from AIC - he was steady for sure. But what about the rest?

Looking at the last few years:
Cronin barely played this past year

Whale was pretty meh his first year, and barely played this year

Ryan Black from DIII was also not that impactful.

Blaisdell had one decent year, but was also not that great…

I’m probably missing a few more. Those are the ones that immediately come to mind.

We’ve talked at length about MS7s inability to develop talent from recruits. And I think (for the most part) it extends to the portal as well.

Hopefully he does better this year, especially if we are losing a predicted 7-8 guys…
I think we got more out of Ryan Black than expected but sorry I don't have his stats in front of me...

Agreed, after three years at Babson, Ryan Black played his 2022/23 senior season at UNH when he was sixth highest scorer (5+8=13) on a team that scored only 74 goals, an all-time low until this season, I think. Chase Stevenson also had a surprisingly good season in 2022/23.

While we wait for the portal to open, and debate rages on about whose golf club is best ... here's a link for a show last Thursday night in Vegas at the House of Blues at Mandalay Bay. Guessing the 2nd game of the semis probably kept our college hockey diehards away, but the greatest drummer of the last half century Carl Palmer and his ELP Legacy mates will be back this September in NH as their world tour continues!!

So far, that adds up to FIVE players, a 1-2--3 scoring line and a -15 for those keeping score at home...

It also leaves UNH with ZERO rostered goalies. You have to think (hope) that cinches a Roberto Henriquez arrival, while also opening the door to a transfer goalie with more than one year of eligibility remaining. Plus a walk-on or second transfer?

My preference remains to bring Henriquez to Durham this season; as opposed to two or three transfer goalies.

I do think that Coombs' departure opens the door to transfers with multi-year eligibility, expanding the potential pool of goalie targets. Here are my preferences among goalies in the portal thus far (sorted by preference within their category of remaining eligibility)...

One Year of Eligibility Remaining:
Lehti (UAF)
Shea (Brown)
--
Airey (Minn)
Gramme (NMU/UW)

Two Years of Eligibility Remaining:
Applebee (LSSU)
Sigurdson (NU)
--
Krivtsov (UAA)

Three Years of Eligibility Remaining:
Strahl (MSU)
--
Langevin (Miami) - No Contact
Gravel (Mercyhurst)
Rosseau (Maine)

Thanks for sharing.

While not losing a lot of production on the ice, the optics of having five players entering the portal isn't good to potential recruits and raises further questions about MS7's ability to recruit, retain and develop his identified prospects.

One more data point capturing his roster mismanagement.

Though I agree with you about his ability to recruit he really had no option to do this to stay at least competitive. Maine has 9 in the portal. When Carvel took over UMASS he cut 10 kids from the roster and their fine now. Look at the Heisenburg team lists many teams have multiple players crossed off. The days of i'm gonna be loyal to one team is over, very sad.

We agree, but at the same time this isn't a situation where a new coach came in and cleaned house. These are players he and his staff identified, recruited and bought to Durham.

There are so many variables in play, admittedly, but at what point does MS7 look in the mirror and say, "what responsibility do I have in this situation?"

Then again, this is his lame duck year.

Thanks for sharing, Dan!

Nothing super surprising here, and I feel follows fairly closely what Emily and Norbert were saying earlier how it lines up with lack of playing time.

The only one from this initial set or 5 that slightly surprises me is Coombs - especially given the optics he is the only goalie on the roster.

My guess is Souza told him they were planning on bringing in Henriquez and looking for a transfer goalie, so he would be relegated to goalie #3 on the depth chart once again. He probably had little interest in burning another year of eligibility getting nothing but garbage time play… it is unfortunate as we never got to see him play and what he may bring to the table, as a number of us were clamoring to see him in action. I wish him (and the rest of the portal crew) all the best.

Now that we have 0 goalies at the moment, my hope would be they look for someone with just 1 (preferably) or max 2 years eligibility left. This will give a decent runway for Henriquez to learn the ropes year 1 before taking over as full time starter year 2. Perhaps then Grout will be ready in 2027 to join and provide some competition. They can likely find a 3rd string goalie as a walk on or perhaps DIII transfer.

Lots of names in there and it’s only been a few hours. Busy day/week ahead!

Reid Conn was actually not a name I had been told but I’m not surprised. There was one more D name I was told but it was very secretive, so maybe that has some influence as to why he’s not in yet. Also still waiting to see if the 3 other forwards enter…

I was told Coombs is looking at schools in Canada.

A couple thoughts on Coombs-

Perhaps after seeing him in person, on the ice, in practice, every day for several months the coaching staff realized/came to the conclusion that he wasn't a Division One goaltender. Given the substandard goaltending UNH had this past season I was disappointed that we never saw him. But this could be why.

And its also possible that Coombs himself, having seen Division One hockey up close and personal, came to the same conclusion, especially given Emily's Intel that he's looking at schools in Canada.

The Vegas HOB is nicer than that hole in the wall where they held the awards ceremony Friday night.

Mike McMahon is a good twitter follow today. He's going all Adam Schefter.

Maine is getting hit hard in the portal. Justin Poirier apparently is headed to the Big 10 and MIguel Marquez is headed to Northeastern. Freshman goalie Rousseau also gone after coming on late in season. Barr did terrific recruiting job and it's gone up in smoke. Money talks......

I saw Connor MacPherson. I did not see his brother. But perhaps it just refreshed.

I didn’t realize UNH still had the rights to Connor after he went back to juniors. Hopefully his brother stays in Durham…
I stand corrected dah...:ROFLMAO: I didn't realize that either about retaining his rights.
