UNH Hockey Off Season Thread 2026

Does anyone know what happened to Jack Cronin this year? he played in the first 8 games then he disappeared.
Now there's an issue that's flown under the radar for some time ... injury? Academics?? Coach's doghouse???

Lack of reporting on stuff like this - arguably minor as it is - is what's been lost with the demise of traditional old school "beat reporters" ...

How did Maine not get her?
Clearly, as a lifelong resident of Orono, she found the lure of bright lights and big city nights of Titletown too tempting to resist.

Actually ... wally can correct me on this if needed, but doing some AI digging (proceed with caution) apparently, she intended to go to Boise State first, but a coaching change forced her to reconsider, and she then chose UNH due to the prominence of their engineering program, and a long history of strong coaching in the distance events. I can speak to some degree on personal experience here, as our youngest (who now has a prominent full-time role with the largest running events company in Northern New England) came across UNH's radar as a distance runner herself here in Effingwoods when she performed well in a number of long distance events (non HS) where UNH track coach Casey Carroll (now the Men's T&F guy, but formerly an assistant to Women's T&F HC Bob Hoppler) also was competing - and these were IIRC 10K and longer events - and one thing led to another, and she was offered a chance to "walk on" at UNH with a schoolmate who was more prominent and did get some scholarship money to join a year later. I wouldn't be surprised to learn that Ruth got onto Casey's radar very early on in her running career in a similar way, was recruited and initially chose elsewhere (Boise), but when that didn't work out, there was history with UNH that made it an easy Plan B option.

Ours was akin to the "Saviano" to her younger "Collins" pal, but in this case, "Saviano" decided to concentrate on her schooling, it's all worked out nicely in the end.

I'm hardly an expert on the topic, but methinks Ruth White will follow Elle (Purrier) St. Pierre's footsteps on to much bigger and better things in the future.

I don’t think MS7 has really shown much apt with the portal. Outside of goalies (Hellsten and KC), who has he gotten that has made a significant difference? I can be convinced of Lindner from AIC - he was steady for sure. But what about the rest?

Looking at the last few years:
Cronin barely played this past year

Whale was pretty meh his first year, and barely played this year

Ryan Black from DIII was also not that impactful.

Blaisdell had one decent year, but was also not that great…

I’m probably missing a few more. Those are the ones that immediately come to mind.

We’ve talked at length about MS7s inability to develop talent from recruits. And I think (for the most part) it extends to the portal as well.

Hopefully he does better this year, especially if we are losing a predicted 7-8 guys…
Hellsten has been without question the best product of the portal at UNH to date, and even he was a short-lived but glorious blip on the screen. Chauvette was probably coming here anyway from the sounds of it, so I'm not sure MS7 gets a ton of credit for that one. Outside of the goalies, I think Blaisdell has been the best of a very weak crop of incoming portal transfers. The best pre-portal transfer of the last decade was Max Gildon, by a sizeable margin.

Nothing screams 10th place program like a coaching staff that can't recruit, can't manage the portal effectively, and can't develop the players they do get ...

Your default is to always resort to name calling rather than making a cogent or rational argument. It's a sign of intellectual weakness. Or, early onset dementia.

But, I appreciate your consistency. Even with Potroast.
What do you want Bert? You disagree with potty now on his side. He made a statement that he did something which is completely inaccurate. Pick a lane

I'm not talking about Potroast.

I'm talking about your prediliction for name calling.

A sign of intelligence and education is the ability to judge an idea or concept by its merits and not by biases, real or perceived, against the person who utters the words. You automatically default to elementary school behavior.

You are a poet and a scholar. An inspiration to us all.

I’m glad I am inspiration you to you. If I could only play as good as a golf course as you my life would be complete.

Congrats to Denver on another Championship - taking the BIG10 down a notch after their string of success in the 2025-2026 school year.

Denver seems to be morphing into the Alabama of the 2010s in college hockey. Carle is perhaps another Nick Saban. Given his age, perhaps he will eventually get a shot at coaching in the NHL?

3 Nattys in 5 years, along with a 12-3 record in tournament play and a .694 overall win percentage will certainly get you noticed at the highest level.

To put into perspective, him and Souza both started in 2018, and Souza just surpassed 100 wins this year, while Carle surpassed 200…

Hopefully Souza was watching the game tonight and took good notes.

Now onto portal week!

All golf courses are good by their very nature, but the quality of the membership makes a club.

I genuflect to your ability to make complexity and nuance disappear.

Just like Potty, deflecting and won't answer a question. Keep talking a big game for someone one who hides behind a fake name.

I answered your question. Just not to your satisfaction.

Not hard to find if 1), you knew my legal name and 2), you could spell.

I maintain multiple memberships.

This is the legend of Johnny Hicks
A third string goalie not in the mix
But he grabbed his chance
Went to the dance...

And thats all I got as I leave Vegas! Fantastic story of John Hicks who saved Denver's butts throughout the tournament..MVP so well deserved.

Like I said...just get to the game!!!

Davd Carle, lamenting the lack of institutional support at Denver that puts it at a disadvantage
Frozen Four: Wisconsin, North Dakota, Michigan, Denver

The argument that bigger isn’t better strains credulity in light of the participants in the Frozen Four this year

Did Carle wink when he made his pitch for additional support from Denver administration? It’s vital to avoid chuckling when making outlandish statements.
