UNH Hockey 2023 Off Season Thread Turn and Face the Strange

Where would you see any player anywhere knocking on any door? I mean...ok so the top players in the portal didn't choose UNH. Most prob had theor school in mind.

I am talking kids in general. Teams with a history of maintaining some resemblance of a chance will get the recruits. What we will get is fringe D1 kids who most likely will play more than they would at any other school and get a full ride.

Even if our coaching stinks, should not UNH be a more desirable destination than about half the Div 1 teams (say 10 AHA, 6 each CCHA, ECAC, and Indies, and 2 NACHO), given our being in HEA, if not much else?

So just read Bentleys HC is stepping down..did you see that coming?

Agree...UNH is a highly desirable place to play and earn a degree...

If Bentley plans to make an all-out effort to replace NICC as the 12th member of Hockey East, they're halfway there with the brand-new facility. Bring in a brand-new coach like one of the two Quinnipiac assistants, and it's full speed ahead, right Snives? If that happens, the alma mater is on the road to D-1 relevance, and I'll actually start paying attention and maybe even take on a rooting interest ...

... please, UNH, make the move was all know needs to be made, and make it NOW.

Nope, I did not see that coming at Bentley. Succinct report posted on CHN earlier on Monday. Ryan Soderquist was one of my favorite players and later when he became head coach a personal friend, for whom I served as a co-faculty advisor to the team. I feel badly that he could not get his team to the next level despite recruiting some excellent players. I am not surprised by this turn of events, as the loss of his best scorers to the portal in each of the past three seasons must have been hard on him. And I am sure that expectations have been higher since the opening of the beautiful on-campus rink several years ago now, like perhaps were expectations after installation of the Jumbotron at the Whitt. Instead, both Bentley and UNH have seen their won-loss records subsequently plummet. I was for the Jumbotron before I was against the Jumbotron, but I am still bullish on the Bentley Arena, even if apparently the anticipated big donor has not yet stepped up for naming rights. As far as a replacement for NICC in HEA, Holy Cross rose to the top in the Atlantic Hockey tournament last month so might be the more worthy candidate.

Good point. Iv'e looked back on the recruiting from 2016-2020 and it was horrific, The recruiting the last few years has been better. The portal up to this point has also been sub-par at best. Jed Baliotti former goalie recruit is going to div3 Colby so your fringe Div1 comment is spot on here.

Smart kid, was wondering where he would end up. He'll be glad his game had holes in it and he wasn't a DI player when he hangs up the pads and relies upon his Colby degree.

Speaking of the portal, BU senior Jamie Armstrong and NU sophomore Jack Hughes appear to be still available.

Hughes would be a good pickup but that would be a shock. I also read that Ryan Siedem made an official visit to UNH last week.

I think Siedem has been mentioned on here before. Might be the best we can hope for realistically.

Hughes on the surface looks to be a talented forward, 2nd round NHL pick ... but underperforming as a bottom six forward with a negative plus/minus on an otherwise plus squad, whose goalie finished the season in The Show. Perfect as a reclamation project of sorts with two years eligibility left, but unfortunately there will be dozens of better coaches/programs with a demonstrated ability to get the player ready for the pros.

This is the problem when the coaching staff has no recognizable ability to develop a kid. Hughes could be a Max Gildon Part Deux, but Gildon Part Un is still stranded in the AHL three years on. And that's your best argument. This is NOT some D-3/low level D-1 player who's just "happy to be here". He has expectations, and MS7 has nothing to sell to him. Sad.

I think that the series will now go seven games, but I am 50/50 on whom will win. As has been written many times on our threads over the years, SOG are meaningless.

I tend to agree with this. Bobrovsky is the X factor, and we could all be looking back next Sunday night at Marchand's clean breakaway at the end of regulation tonight as the kill shot that should have ended it. But unless Bob totally stands on his head - something he IS capable of - I don't see Florida winning three straight here.

Frankly, I'm surprised the B's are struggling with this opponent. And seeing how the chronically underperforming Leafs also have the perennial Cup contenders Tampa Bay on the ropes, it could be setting up nicely for the B's, just as their 2019 Cup run fell into place for them ('til the very end, anyway).

Found it interesting also to see DRW head coach Derek Lalonde dropping a dime on his former TBL goalie ...

Tampa Bay's Jon Cooper takes shot at Detroit's Derek Lalonde - HockeyFeed

Lalonde - "We had to reconfigure our entire defense at Tampa Bay to allow Vassy to see shots from the point."

Cooper - "Ratface Lalonde is just making it up, pay no attention to the man behind the curtain", arrgggghhhh ...

Nothing beats the Stanley Cup playoffs. Nothing.

Yup, Marchand needed one more second that he knew he did not have to add a deke. But I think that you are right; this series is now Bobrovsky’s series to lose as he has gotten into the heads of the Bruins.

I have no clue on how a goalie is coached but geeze have seen it in the college level, and at the pros, where goalies leave their cage and end up getting scored on. I get it that ullmark had a 'miscue' (Billy Jaffes word for it) but totally is on the hook for that goal. "It could happen to anyone" but, for the love of all that is holy, drives me nuts. Bruins do not play well in Sunrise tho they did get that win the other night there. We'll see. Not too thrilled with the D either at this point. They (Bruins) won't win every game I get it but if they lose this series, somehow, I will not be surprised.

Hard to believe they are even in this position with this team...

I was not in favor of starting Ullmark in every game and game 5 was the obvious one to give Swayman his earned turn.
