UNH Hockey 2023 Off Season Thread Turn and Face the Strange

I keep coming to this page hoping, praying that this UNH hockey nightmare will finally come to an end. So many great comments and ideas on here, but nonetheless, we dont hold the keys to making this happen.

Maybe let us think a little differently. If UNH and AD Rich dont want to (or cant) pony up the money, then why not take a drastic step to force MS7's hand? Tell him privately that you will pay him his head coach salary, but demote him to assistant coach. Elevate Stewie to interim coach, or heck, hire the soccer coach for 1 year. How much worse could he be, and he has proven he can recruit AND win. Still paying the same amount of money but showing that at least change is coming. If MS7 had any pride, he would leave or take a smaller buyout. Continuing on with this travesty just makes the rebuild that much worse and keeps more STH and fans walking out the door.

I can't see MS7 stepping back and taking a demotion at the same salary. The issue I see is that he thinks he can built the program, but after 5 years he has proven that he can't. There is also a disconnect between player and coach that will only be solved by sending him off with his severence and bringing in new blood.

Wonder if players evaluate their coaches...coaches are not expected to be best buddies bit you have to want to play for them. Which in turn attracts other players etc...

Nope...if the tie is to be cut...cut it fully.

I agree, you don't have to like your coach as a friend but you have to like/respect where you want to play for him which is not there.

5 Years?
He's been the appointed HC with full authority at UNH for 8 years. That was the very premise to the plan. Before that he tried to build Brown for two years but they went backwards from the progress made by Jerry Keefe as an assistant before him. If we're being extremely generous we could say he was there when U.Conn moved to HE, though much more progress occurred years after he left.

I'm sure his contract requires him to be HC.

Then let him stay on as the head hockey coach. But also inform him that his team is now self-identifying as the winter soccer team, so he is still the hockey coach, but doesnt have any players. They all play soccer now. :-) ;-)

5 years? 8 years? No matter how you slice it, truly time to just put him out to T-School pasture.

Welp there it is! Will be cool to follow them- who knows? Maybe in a Regional...

MS7 has shown that he cannot recruit, cannot coach, cannot develop players, and now cannot use the portal effectively. Four strikes and he should be OUT! At least in an ordinary universe.

So disheartening to watch your team and program be dissembled and unravel in front of your eyes, while those in charge stand by and let it happen. Really unacceptable, but no matter what we say or do, no change appears to be on the horizon. It's time for immediate action, but alas, that's not for us to decide.

..and by a Regional I'm not saying UNH will be there...Im talking about OSU...

While I'm bummed about our losses am hopeful Brendan Fitzgerald can fill the bill. Maybe we get another decent dman...you never know.

Oops, North Reading not quite adjacent to Wakefield, or Melrose. But, +7 at Cedar Falls this past season, so that is a plus (heh, heh).

Close enough. Recall Saviano and Collins were both Reading kids, which sits neatly between Wakefield and North Reading.

Yup, apparently Reading is the well that never runs dry for UNH men’s hockey. As a digression, my father grew up in Reading. How about adding to Saviano and Collins:
Ryan Verrier
Joe Sacco
Jeff Wyer
Bruce MacDonald
Kevin Thomson
Steve Smith
Mark Doherty
Ralph Robinson

Before MS7, there was Mike McShane from Wakefield.

Besides Umile, there were Tim Burke and Dan Muse from Melrose.

Yeah, I know, dredging the bottom of the barrel for content on this thread.

We aren't the only school in HE who's shopped the 617 and even the 603 pipeline. And..heard it first hand that "you can find a decent hockey player in your own backyard"

That said..we have a future commit from the Ukraine I believe as well as adding the Swedish goalie so we do have receipts for getting players from other places besides Melrose and Wakefield .

Plus the added distinction of having the first ever Japanese D1 player (Kohei Sato)...

Keep on dredging tho we can't become complacent here!

Casting a wider net is good, but there has to be quality. The goalie coming in I don't think would meet that requirement, it really boils down to UNH needed a second goalie and this was the only option, good or bad.

The current pipeline will not bring UNH back to relevance in college hockey and until there is a reset we will continue to discuss the same issues.

My point was to tease Snively about our 'out of Melrose'. But I hear what you are saying. So, do tell, what is the hot pipeline these days? Where are the Grayson Downings hiding? (my time frame)

Btw..Bruins in 5.

I am not sure where they are hiding, but I can tell you where they are not going. I don't see a lot of "I hope UNH comes knocking" out there. Until there is an overhaul and a coach that can recruit and kids want to play for, this will continue.

Where would you see any player anywhere knocking on any door? I mean...ok so the top players in the portal didn't choose UNH. Most prob had theor school in mind.
