UNH Hockey 2023-2024 Season Thread - End Of The Cellar-Dweller Era??

To follow up on Chuck’s post, I, too, remember Max Gildon having the puck stripped a few times on the PP at the blue line leading to 1 on 0 and 2 on 0 break always. And Gildon was 4 inches taller and 30 pounds heavier than Fitzgerald, and was a #66 overall NHL pick in 2017. Gildon’s numbers at UNH were -5, -7, -2; 23, 21, 29 points; 47, 45, 40 penalty minutes during the 2017/18, 2018/19, and 2019/20 seasons when the team was setting new lows each season. Gildon appears to be now playing in Europe after three seasons in the AHL. TvR and Brett Pesce from our earlier declining years, who also both left after their junior years, have been our most successful NHL D-men since Rod Langway.

During our last Frozen Four season in 2002/2003, Garrett Stanford, who returned for spring semester after credits for a summer course in California did not transfer making him ineligible to play fall semester, stabilized the blue line by scoring a goal and 15 assists, more than any of the other D-men (Horst, Lubesnick (Jumbotron!), Teplitsky, Truelson, Mounsey, Barker, Yandle) who played many more games that season. Of course, we had Mike Ayers who played all but 66 minutes in net and a couple high-scoring forward lines.

..and posters here were more than happy to vilify Max for those turnovers...but anyway..I agree that Fitzy has an upside and he's been battling his adjustment to D1 hockey. I said earlier in the season that I liked his compete level and as he matures hes a solid dman.

We lost terribly at the dot which isn't something we normally do. Doubt it led to the outcome but it was I think notable. Maybe UMass is just better than we are in that aspect of the game.

As for "UNH being UNH" I still expected more from a team that swept Maine. Statistically we are similar to UMass and had alot of possession which should have led to more quality scoring opps. I'm not kidding myself that I have a clue for defensive analysis but they definitely held us off well.

Darius you said that this weekend will be "telling" and I guess it has been so far. I get it where UNH is and am hapoy for the improvements but oh...that power play reeks. Wasn't much better for UMass who went 0/3.

Let's go 'Cats!!!

Excellent post Chuck on the odd man rush analysis. We just need Fitzy to stop taking 5 minute majors. I'll take some rookie mistakes but the 5 minute major is a no-no for the 6th D man.

HR, the UNH women are in 3rd right now but they need 1 point today at BC to secure the 3rd spot heading into their home quarterfinal next Sat at 6 pm. If BC wins today in regulation, they get the 3 spot back and UNH would drop to 4th. Puck drop is at 2 pm.

The last time the UNH women hosted a HE playoff game other than a MBPBEGAM/WBPBEGAM game was back in 2012-2013, when they blew a 3-0 lead and lost 5-4 in OT to PC in a home HE quarterfinal match.

Thank you for the info regarding the women's team! Wishing them alot of luck along the way. Seems both teams haven't hosted a home game in awhile...for the men (without looking) I'd say it was v UConn in 2015?

Might catch some of their game instead of everything else I should be doing before heading to Durham..

OK, now after reading several times about how Fitzy "misplayed" a 3-on-1 a couple of weeks ago, and now Jensen "completely misplayed" a 2-on-1 last night ... norbie, are we asking enough questions about why these odd-man rushes are originating in the first place?? You seem to be giving the absent D-partners and/or covering forwards a pass for not being around to create these odd-man chances. Gagne fell "which was tough" ... well, him falling set up the 2-on-1 didn't it? Doesn't that put him higher in the blame pie chart than Jensen, who was unfortunately left (with the goalie) to clean up the mess that was dumped on them? I haven't seen the video yet (I will try later), but just on the surface of things, you seem to be inferring there is some fail-safe way of consistently breaking up 2-on-1's. Truth be told, short of improper spacing between the attacking skaters, it's usually a matter of "pick your poison" as the lone D, and hope for the best, isn't it?

The Fitzy stuff seems to have gotten to the next level of silly. So you say a young frosh playing his first season of D-1 hockey is the worst D on the team in terms of plus/minus?? Shocker. Maybe, just possibly, the coaching staff sees him as a future solution, and knowing some of their veterans won't be back next season, they want to have a succession plan that doesn't involve sitting him out, and ensuring he's going to be on the transfer list shortly?? Let's look at Babbage's plus/minus as a frosh ... -4, in less than half the games. Prorated, guess what?? -8. Wow.

I've seen the Fitzy "misplay" of the 3-on-1 that has led to lots of ridicule. Was he indecisive? Heck, yeah. Was it his fault that neither he nor Hellsten had support from the missing D AND a backchecking forward or two?? Uh, no. And 3-on-1 breaks should not be commonplace where any defender should be expected to routinely break it up (see earlier comments on 2-on-1's). Spacing of the attacking players again is always going to be the determining factor. Blaming the guy left behind to clean up the mess, as opposed to the guys who created it ... sorry, I'm not there with you. The fact that we normalize and tolerate the conditions that lead to these breaks, and not look to eliminate or minimize those shortcomings, well we're losing the plot right there.

I'm not ready to say that Fitzy is the next Gildon-in-training; Max took a lot of frosh heat too, while learning on the job. That he didn't handle what was probably his first-ever 3-on-1 counter in a live game at this level against guys with D-1 talent, shouldn't be his cross to bear. I hope he can handle the "tough love" approach, but if we want a program filled with more talented Fitzy's than with Joe Schmoe 3rd-pairing-for-life types like we've been watching for the better part of the last decade, this is the price you have to be prepared to pay. JMHO.

The odd man rushes are created with poorly timed pinches. Huard is famous for trying to make a pass or move at the blue line or shooting into a shin pad. There should be work on both aspects, preventing them and if not how to play them. While a 2-1 is tough on D it can bee very basic from the standpoint of how to play it, and that is not with you back to a defender.

Babbage is not playing as a frosh, he is a junior who is +5 this year in 7 less games. Also he has 0 minutes in the box compared to 42. Having 2 majors and thus 2 games you were booted from puts your team in a terrible spot and should not be rewarded with continued ice time. There are going to be growing pains, but how long do you let it continue when you are fighting for your life in the PWR.

Congrats to the UNH Womens securing 3rd place in HE sweeping the BC Eagles! Will host playoff game next Sat.opponent TBD

Besides scoring the only goal in first, JPT got three of team’s seven SOG’s. Give that third line more ice time, MS7!

Also, good improvement on FOW, with 11-5 in first.

Ten straight PP’s without a goal, and one goal in the last 15 PP’s, including two 5-minute majors.

NCAA PWR bubble teams PC and Michigan have held serve tonight, but Cornell down 2-0 early in third against St Lawrence.

How does a shootout win (or loss) impact the PWR?

Hey you managed to win it and grab 2 pts. I think only grabbing 2/6 is going to hurt. You guys are going to need to beat BC at least once.

Not as helpful as a regulation win, but better than any kind of loss in the PWR. Problem is that all the other bubble teams also won tonight, although Cornell needed a seven-round shoot out after tying St Lawrence with two EAG’s. There is now a PWR 3-point break between #10 St Clown and the remaining 8-9 bubble teams.

Pretty much a reality check. Only a two point weekend. 0fer the weekend on the PP. The offensive zone penalty that resulted in UMA’s first goal… Coach Souza said post game that we were outplayed/on our heels most of the night. Good for the ’cats showing resiliency, evening it up late and getting the extra point, but we needed three. The game in hand and early season results vs. NU could be big. Huskies closing fast on sixth place. PWR is done.
