To follow up on Chuck’s post, I, too, remember Max Gildon having the puck stripped a few times on the PP at the blue line leading to 1 on 0 and 2 on 0 break always. And Gildon was 4 inches taller and 30 pounds heavier than Fitzgerald, and was a #66 overall NHL pick in 2017. Gildon’s numbers at UNH were -5, -7, -2; 23, 21, 29 points; 47, 45, 40 penalty minutes during the 2017/18, 2018/19, and 2019/20 seasons when the team was setting new lows each season. Gildon appears to be now playing in Europe after three seasons in the AHL. TvR and Brett Pesce from our earlier declining years, who also both left after their junior years, have been our most successful NHL D-men since Rod Langway.
During our last Frozen Four season in 2002/2003, Garrett Stanford, who returned for spring semester after credits for a summer course in California did not transfer making him ineligible to play fall semester, stabilized the blue line by scoring a goal and 15 assists, more than any of the other D-men (Horst, Lubesnick (Jumbotron!), Teplitsky, Truelson, Mounsey, Barker, Yandle) who played many more games that season. Of course, we had Mike Ayers who played all but 66 minutes in net and a couple high-scoring forward lines.
..and posters here were more than happy to vilify Max for those turnovers...but anyway..I agree that Fitzy has an upside and he's been battling his adjustment to D1 hockey. I said earlier in the season that I liked his compete level and as he matures hes a solid dman.
We lost terribly at the dot which isn't something we normally do. Doubt it led to the outcome but it was I think notable. Maybe UMass is just better than we are in that aspect of the game.
As for "UNH being UNH" I still expected more from a team that swept Maine. Statistically we are similar to UMass and had alot of possession which should have led to more quality scoring opps. I'm not kidding myself that I have a clue for defensive analysis but they definitely held us off well.
Darius you said that this weekend will be "telling" and I guess it has been so far. I get it where UNH is and am hapoy for the improvements but oh...that power play reeks. Wasn't much better for UMass who went 0/3.
Let's go 'Cats!!!
