UNH Commits & Recruiting: 2019 and Beyond

With the season winding down, and no real clear uncommitted goalie prospects in North America, this post makes me wonder if UNH was/is looking for a Euro goalie for next year

Harvard gets verbal commit from Aku Koskenvuo, per source. Athletic 6-4 goalie from Finland is eligible for 2021 NHL draft. Hockey East, Big 10 schools also were in on him

I think there will also be a market for goalies looking to transfer. NCAA awarded everyone another year of eligibility so there may be some backups that are looking for starting spot rather than to sit another year....just another option.

Great. Just what UNH needs right now. Somebody else's back-up goalie for a year, two tops.

Not disputing what you're saying, Lemonade. Just a comment on this sad stare of affairs ...

Here's the goalie
After a big win in the opening round of the Hockey East Tournament on Wednesday, UNH gets a commitment from U.S. NTDP U-17 G Tyler Muszelik today.

I am extremely proud and humbled to announce my commitment to play division 1 hockey at the University of New Hampshire. I would like to thank my family, friends, teammates, and coaches for all the support along the way.

The kid turns 17 in July, and his GAA and save percentages with the NTDP aren't exactly stellar.

So he won't be here for another couple of years anyway, and MS7 might be gone by then ...

The roster is firming up for next year, with only a couple of questions. 1.Who is the first line RW? and 2.Nick Ardanaz v. Alex Gagne on D.

MacAdams v. An Unknown
At present, there is little returning on RW. That is both worrisome and welcome. RW was a weakness, as Grasso and Kelleher only contributed minimally in even strength play. MacAdams played pretty well, and could return as a fifth year senior. The alternative is that they might be able to use the opening to entice a highly skilled recruit like Rickwood, even though he is far from polished, by offering the chance to grab him, force feed someone like Evans, or hope Cafarelli makes a significant jump. Wrapped in that question is a vision for the team, where each would be an offense first winger with significant learning on the defensive end. Is Souza willing to take his beating this year for the benefit of having offensive skilled wingers in the future?

Ardanaz v. Gagne
Ardanaz had a less impressive end of year, with little offense away from the powerplay (essentially, Kalle Eriksson). So he may want/need a final year in juniors to round out his production. From a scholarship management point, as well, UNH would be heavy on scholarship D if both Gagne and Ardanaz were in the class. Up front, Ardanaz's buddy, Evans, showed offensive skills in the BCHL, then later in the USHL. But as the season ended, he was moved down the USHL depth chart, and had several DNPs. He's only 5'10/155 pounds, and while he has top line potential, you could see a transition year with him on the 3rd line learning the ropes before jumping to the top 6 forwards as a sophomore.

Next season is looking grim offensively, maybe pretty good defensively? Someone like Coach Bazin could probably manage this just fine, hopefully MS7 will start to figure things out ...

He's likely to take one either way - maybe you win 1-2 more games while taking a beating w/ 'dependable vets' or you take a chance on talent. The decision will be telling...
