I would think another of Cox’s tweet would get your attention. ‘99 Finn Vilho Saariluoma decommitted from Union. Had 52 points for Cushing

Dang strait, HR, bring us some Finns! :-)

No. 1 country on the Happiness Index.

No Olympics in the way the next three seasons either.

"Massachusetts native Zack Jones grew up playing his youth hockey playing for the Boston Jr. Bandits. After spending a few seasons with the 16U team, he speared in 10 games for the NCDC team this season. Jones recently committed to New Hampshire, where the ’01 will matriculate in 2020" ...

Hey now, don't you know it's the SMTs you'll be skating for soon enough :-) But at least you've got another two years to work that mean streak out of your game; we've got a reputation to uphold ya know ...

Re: UNH Commits & Recruiting: 2017 and Beyond

So with Corson Green no longer on board, will UNH bring in another DMan for next season???

Re: UNH Commits & Recruiting: 2017 and Beyond

I believe Grasso and Sacco will get red shirt year for 2017-2018. They will have 3 years of eligibility going forward. Sacco has a good blood line and will likely be a secondary goal scorer this coming year. I believe Lucas Bahn is coming this year. I am uncertain about Corson Green.

Hmm....1932 got the Corson Green part correct, let's see if he's right about Lucas Bahn.

I hope not. I am not worried about losing Green - whether he decided to bolt for another school or the OHL or Souza decided to look elsewhere - he isn't a big loss. As I said in the other thread he was 2-6-8 and -21 in 48 games this season. Bahn is 1-5-6 and -15 and still just 18 years old. He's not ready to contribute in a meaningful way.

UNH needs another defenseman now - at least one - and has an opportunity to go get a real impact guy, for either right now or down the road. Rushing kids into school is only a benefit for the program right no if they can use it as a carrot to attract someone they may otherwise not get. Rushing kids like Bahn (and Pierson - and to some degree Verrier) instead doesn't accomplish a whole lot and really just shows a lack of creativity and urgency.

Neither has done anything to force such a rush and sending both (all three back to juniors) is not a 'deferral' as none were marked to come this season anyway. UNH has a chance (again) to add a player who can perhaps help immediately and certainly upgrade the long term D depth by getting someone in this fall who they may otherwise be unable to - and someone who can the join the mix WITH Bahn and Verrier. They passed on Suchy etc, to accelerate Pierson. They should not do the same to replace Green...

I'm the BCHL alone, there are high-scoring 20 year olds they could evaluate to discover a late bloomer (many), highly regarded 19 year olds (Carter Stephenson) and coveted 18 year olds they may not be in the mix for with another season of development (Perry Winfred and Carter Berger). There also exists their favorite kind of D prospect - a talented 18 year old, who has shown enough development hurdles to be dropped by a major DI program (Alec Clapstick - ND). Go grab someone like that, rather than rushing a kid who isn't ready and is already in your stable (and will likely turn into a Dawson/Kapstad/Furgele type anyway)...

In the USHL Casey Staum is no longer committed to UNO. Michael Ferrandino was a big time prospect who has stalled a bit in his development, but is only an 18 year old, '00. DJ King is a raw Corson Green type. Just notably better, two years younger and playing with the USNTDP. Take a chance on one of these kids, instead...

Or if you don't like these options and want to wait on better players (legit impact only - or still move on these types but not early enroll) then grab a walk-on and roll with Gildon, Maass, Wyse, Verrier, Boyd and Dawson. Instead address what will truly hold the team back in 18-19 and add one of the ready to impact Fs we've discussed ad nauseaum. Maybe get both.

Adding Bahn right away likely does little to help UNH this season. It may or may not help Bahns development in the future - and could easily stunt it. I believe Miller is the better player - they should have just kept him at thy point anyway. They can do better by the team and by Bahn and just punting on trying in lieu of accelerating (for the third time in recent months) would be really disappointing...

Re: UNH Commits & Recruiting: 2017 and Beyond

They are trying Dan and have probably met with some names you mentioned. Bahn is not a lock at present to come to UNH this fall. I presumed they would not have the money for one or two more players. They may have enough for two players on defense and hoping for one more on offense. You are probably right on Bahn as he probably does need another year. He is Kostalansky size and we do have some larger defensemen than in the recent past. They rarely have less than 8 defensemen over the past decade.

Have some faith and they might surprise you in a good way. Regardless, I predict they will be better this year for a multitude of reasons. I am guessing they are adding up the frequent flyer miles at present for the right fit superstar or two over the next few weeks.

I may be wrong, as I often am.

Please come back to the rink season ticket holders as we need to fill the house as top recruits are keen on a strong fan base that does not abuse the existing players on the forum.

Good - on this point I hope you are correct. I am not as high on Bahn as you are (shocker!), but Kostolansky is a perfect comp if all goes right. In order to reach that level though, I think Bahn needs to go back to the USHL and play a lead role next season while gaining experience and building strength. That is the best path for him to be the type of player they need him to be - solid defensively, move pucks and chip in 10-15 points a year. Just imagine how much better it would be to have a Kostolansky type AND another critical piece moving forward (as opposed to rushing development of plan A and pushing plan B further down the road). I hope that is what their plan is and if they execute it I will be the first one to give them credit where credit is due...

I do agree that the team will be better next year - due to minimal losses, the development of whats currently in the stable and better, more consistent goaltending. However, I think the team's biggest need remains goal-scoring. That is the area that will limit the team next year, as it did this year. Adding a couple of guns to the top-six would be my top priority. If they can't land a legitimate impact D - I'd pick up a walk-on, push Dawson into the line-up every night, add offense and look to the future for defensemen...

Re: UNH Commits & Recruiting: 2017 and Beyond

Am seeing quite a few 'committed to..." today on Twitter..is this a national commit day or something? Just wondering...

I'd like to say that any future commit who reads these forums should recognize them for what they are; fan based perusals. Some good stuff, some ok stuff, some stuff not worth reading. I think fans need a place to discuss players, teams, and all other matters relating to hockey. Fans all want the same thing; a team that wins. This is NCAA D 1 hockey so the expectations are going to run very high. Scholarshipped athletes need a thick skin and their fans also need to keep in mind they are 'student athletes' not the Bruins.

That said...I'm looking forward to the future of UNH hockey and hope to see a few more "committed to..." coming our way soon!!

I would hope student athletes playing D-1 hockey at UNH are a few rungs up on the mental toughness/resilience scale than their more typically sheltered "snowflake" classmates, the latter of whom would probably faint if they were subjected to the general atmosphere of a hockey rink/arena - much less the give-and-take of being on a true merit-based team. No "safe spaces" out there (despite BS35+6s best efforts to the contrary), not even on the Olympic-sized sheet. If a player or a recruit is put off by on-line chatter or in-person "feedback" from a collection of wanna-be's, has-been's or never-were's either here at USCHO or in the stands, then I respectfully think they need to find a different line of work (and as we see every Spring, most of these players do harbor some professional ambitions). I certainly wouldn't want any of those immature children competing on a semi-pro team I'm rooting for. Now git off ma lawn ... :p ;)

Re: UNH Commits & Recruiting: 2017 and Beyond

I always appreciate this thread because of the realization that recruiting is a top priority and you talk about potential targets, I find that Clarkson needs a few talented defensemen to replace Amorosa and Summers who were our senior catalysts on defense this past season, we have one in Brian Hurley who I love but then there is a defenseman on Cedar Rapids, Matt Denman, he's a pretty impressive skater, solid size for the type of player he is, can really run the point on the PP, I can't believe he hasn't found a home yet and the more and more I watch him I want Clarkson to pick him up but I could see a nice fit with UNH on the big ice. I don't know the circumstances if maybe grades are low or he's willingly waiting to potentially take more visits, maybe he's someone that has his eyes set on a Minnesota school, I don't know but this late in the process a player like him seems he'd be a high priority on a lot of coaches lists.

Maybe President? Act like a toughie but whine about every little comment.

Seems like most if not all of our critiques are pointed more at the adults, and they're the ones upset.

I will take the minority view here and say it isn't about tough skin it is about the culture surrounding a team. If you are 15-17 and live outside of NE, where might you, your family or others learn more about a particular school. If I had a 16 year old hoping to crack D-1 and thinking what about UNH, where would I look? USCHO for one. What would i have seen these past few years? A very discouraged fan base painting a very sad picture for the future. Out of touch coach, coach in waiting not getting many props, and a team that appears to lack most things you would want to play beside.

Yes, they will need thick skin and it is probably getting thicker each year as they develop. But it is all about those initial impressions and we have not presented as a desired destination. I'm with everyone that misses the "good old days" but we have certainly beat the dead horse on all of our collective frustrations for a long time. I for one, do see an up tick and I'm willing to give MS and the boys a chance. And I too hope for a goal scorer or 2, just like Dan and everyone else!

They don't need to come to USCHO to get that information - they can check the standings. They have parents and advisors looking into the program directly. Recruits know what the reality of every situation is across college hockey. At that point it's up to UNH coaches to sell a brighter future and attract recruits. We give ourselves far too much credit if we think we're a factor in the decision making process...

BU fans rip Quinn constantly - including his coaching and development ability - but it does nothing to stop the parade of prospects into Agganis, because there more concerned with what Quinn himself has to say...

Precisely.

Re: UNH Commits & Recruiting: 2017 and Beyond

Precisely.

Of course they have all of that working for them. But let's personalize it a bit. When you look for a job, do you just go with what their HR person tells you? what you learn at your interview? What the recruiter who called you tells you? No, you do your own research and talk to any contact friend or online source you can find. So when they get here, this is what they have seen. It is only a point, not a condemnation of individuals, and to think it doesn't have some effect is frankly nieve.

Like most things in life, is it the chicken or the egg? Do we fill the house and attract better kids or do we hope to attract good kids to fill the house? We will probably need to do a little of each.

You're making it too complicated, ATW. Just show these recruits that you (Souza, et als) know how to win, and how the recruits will figure prominently in your plan, and the irrelevant kvetching on this little corner of the universe becomes even more irrelevant. It all begins and ends with success, or the hope for success. The best players want to be associated with the best programs. If you show you are one of the best programs, the rest will follow.

Conversely, we could bang out The Whitt with sell-outs every game, paper the house with free tickets to cover those you can't sell, wrap the players in bubble-wrap and cater to their every whim and make them feel as wanted as anyone possibly could be. But if the guy who is running the program doesn't know how to translate all of that into a winning program, then you're still screwed, aren't you?

BU has some of the most caustic fans on this board, can't sell out a beautiful state-of-the-art facility, but whether they were playing in a dump down the street (WBA) or in their current palace, they still seem to enjoy constant success in drawing the cream of the crop recruits. In the infamous words of Al Davis ... Just Win, Baby!!

Yesterday was last day to apply for job as assistant. Given the glaring needs of two starting defensemen recruits this late in the season, I hope White gets announced today and hits the ground running. Perhaps the delay in the two recruits is because they are non traditional? Euros?
