Re: UNH Commits & Recruiting: 2017 and Beyond

No thanks. Speedy forwards with some creativity who can take a 50/50 loose pucks, and break clear of the big oafish guys to create an advantage. Sean Collins/TK, or Sikura -- and the best NU player vs. Providence -- Jeremy Davies who was able to beat the first forechecker to create several advantages.

Yeah those too. All of the above.

Re: UNH Commits & Recruiting: 2017 and Beyond

Ref

I believe Grasso and Sacco will get red shirt year for 2017-2018. They will have 3 years of eligibility going forward. Sacco has a good blood line and will likely be a secondary goal scorer this coming year. I believe Lucas Bahn is coming this year. I am uncertain about Corson Green. Jackson Pierson might be the fast forward who can score. Remember, Saviano and Collins came in at 18 and Pierson played a tougher schedule than Mass High School Hockey. I doubt he is going to be as good as either but he may surprise and be on one of the first two lines this year. He is Sato quick/fast with a bit more skill. I hope all have a happy and good off-season and I hope people renew their tickets this year. I welcome all of those Umile Haters to come back to the Whitt this fall. I knew we might have problems when we flat out sucked against Dartmouth and Yale and the straw that broke the camel's back was Brown. There will be a positive atmosphere this year in the locker room and I am not predicting a national championship, but we will be better this coming year.

I have confidence that Mike Souza will be a great head coach and recruiting will be better than the NJ years. It might be smart to go to MD as we had some successes there. We do need more goons and speedsters to deal with the trap used by most hockey east teams. Esposito plays a lot like Macadams and we need more just like him. It would be great if a few of the juniors have a breakout scoring year and I doubt we will see the same lines this coming fall. I believe they will match speed and skill on the lines this year.

I have no predictions on wins and they will not be bringing coach Umile back to get those last 4 wins. Thanks Watcher for giving Souza some time to sort out the future. Chuck, thanks for the catnip post as you have been on the board forever and are a true fan. I am sure we will see you at the games next year. I will leave tickets at the will call window for you and the family. We have gone downhill since you stopped attending games. Merrimack playoff games were the only times I have seen you out and about over the past few years. Get back to the rink.

Best to all

Re: UNH Commits & Recruiting: 2017 and Beyond

12.8.4 Hardship Waiver. A student-athlete may be granted an additional year of competition by the conference
or the Committee on Student-Athlete Reinstatement for reasons of “hardship.” Hardship is defined as
an incapacity resulting from an injury or illness that has occurred under all of the following conditions: (Revised:
1/10/92 effective 8/1/92, 1/14/97, 8/1/97, 4/26/01 effective 8/1/01, 11/1/01, 4/3/02, 8/8/02, 3/10/04, 5/11/05,
9/18/07, 11/1/07 effective 8/1/08, 4/24/08, 7/31/14)

(a) The incapacitating injury or illness occurs in one of the four seasons of intercollegiate competition at any twoyear
or four-year collegiate institutions or occurs after the first day of classes in the student-athlete’s senior year
in high school;
(b) The injury or illness occurs prior to the first competition of the second half of the playing season that concludes
with the NCAA championship in that sport (see Bylaw 12.8.4.3.4) and results in incapacity to compete
for the remainder of that playing season;
(c) In team sports, the injury or illness occurs when the student-athlete has not participated in more than three
contests or dates of competition (whichever is applicable to that sport) or 30 percent (whichever number is
greater) of the institution’s scheduled or completed contests or dates of competition in his or her sport. Only
scheduled or completed competition against outside participants during the playing season that concludes
with the NCAA championship, or, if so designated, during the official NCAA championship playing season
in that sport (e.g., spring baseball, fall soccer), shall be countable under this limitation in calculating both the
number of contests or dates of competition in which the student-athlete has participated and the number of
scheduled or completed contests or dates of competition during that season in the sport. Dates of competition
that are exempted (e.g., alumni contests, foreign team in the United States) from the maximum permissible
number of contests or dates of competition shall count toward the number of contests or dates in which the
student-athlete has participated and the number of scheduled or completed contests or dates of competition
in the season, except for scrimmages and exhibition contests that are specifically identified as such in the
sport’s Bylaw 17 playing and practice season regulations
. Scrimmages and exhibition contests that are not
exempted from the maximum permissible number of contests or dates of competition may be excluded from
the calculation only if they are identified as such in the sport’s Bylaw 17 playing and practice season regulations;
and...

I'd put UNH's odds at getting Grasso back in the positive - after hearing SO many connected to the AD certain that he'd get his Waiver, I wanted to know why and did some more research. I found one key bylaw that I earlier missed. This bylaw states that any fraction of a game as determined by the 30% rule would be rounded up to a full-game. If that is true - even from as low as a 0.1 fraction then Grasso only needs to get his denominator to 37 games to qualify. I don't find clear evidence in the bylaws that UNH can get there - but I think there is definitely room for an appeal....

12.8.4.3.6.2 Fraction in Percent Computation. Any computation of the percent limitation that
results in a fractional portion of a contest or date of competition shall be rounded to the next whole
number (e.g., 30 percent of a 29-game basketball schedule—8.7 games—shall be considered nine
games). (Revised: 1/14/97 effective 8/1/97, 4/26/07, 7/31/14)

This rule is key, because UNH can get to 30% using a games played total for Grasso of 11.1 - which would round up to 12. Then, they need to get the denominator hire (countable games) to make 11.1 GP, 30% of the schedule. That means the denominator would be 37. Which is feasible, but murky. Ive bolded (above) a bylaw referring to the exhibition game and (below) a bylaw referring to post-season play.

12.8.4.3.6.1 Denominator in Percent Computation.
12.8.4.3.6.1.1 Team Sports. The denominator in the institution’s percent calculation shall be
based on the institution’s number of scheduled or completed varsity contests or dates of competition
[see Bylaw 12.8.4-(c)] as computed for playing and practice season purposes in Bylaw 17 for
the applicable sport. [Note: Exempted events in Bylaw 17 are included in the percent calculation,
except as provided in Bylaw 12.8.4-(c).] An institution participating in a single-elimination event
may only count the actual contests in which the institution participates (as opposed to the number
of contests scheduled in the event) in determining the number of scheduled or completed contests
in the denominator. (Revised: 1/14/97 effective 8/1/97, 2/11/98, 4/26/01 effective 8/1/01, 6/21/01,
8/4/05, 4/24/08, 7/31/14)

12.8.4.3.6.1.1.1 Conference Championships. A conference championship shall be
counted as one contest or date of competition in determining the institution’s scheduled or
completed contests or dates of competition in that sport, regardless of the number of days or
games involved in the championship.
However, for purposes of this regulation, the calculation
of scheduled or completed contests or dates of competition in a particular season does not
include postseason competition conducted after the completion of the institution’s regularseason
schedule and conference tournament. (Revised: 1/14/97 effective 8/1/97, 4/26/01 effective
8/1/01, 8/4/05, 7/31/14)

12.8.4.3.6.1.1.2 Contests or Dates of Competition Based on Championship Selection.
In sports in which the playing season may be divided into two segments, but championship

contests or dates of competition for the entire season (e.g., nonchampionship and championship
segments). In sports in which the playing season may be divided into two segments, but

spring baseball, fall soccer), the denominator shall be based on the institution’s number of

The bylaw claims that 'counting' exhibitions is applicable by sport. The exhibition game is a huge advantage for Grasso - because he didn't play. Most often, a player would compete in the exhibition game, a few regular season games and THEN get hurt. Grasso was injured at the start of the season and missed the St. X game. Do exhibitions count in hockey. I don't find a clear answer. UNH certainly hopes they do. The other note about the post-season is interesting. It claims that conference tournaments count as one game, ncaa tournament games do not count. This is to avoid one team getting a waiver, while another one does not, due to advancing further. I see no note that post-season tournaments in hockey can count for more than one game, but a UNH appeal depends on their series at Maine counting as two games...

----

UNH's Case for a Waiver Appeal

* 1 Exhibition Game
* 34 Regular Season Games
* 2 Post-Season Games
* 37 Total Games * 30% = 11.1 GP
* Rounding 11.1 to 12 GP

So UNH's argument will be that every team plays an exhibition and - in the sport of college hockey as currently set up - every team gets at least two post-season games. Thus, these three games should be countable in terms of completed contests providing a denominator of 37. We'll see if they win it. It is an argument that makes sense...

Hardships are covered under bylaw 12 in the link below - season playing time and hockey specific is bylaw 17. Anyone read any different...???

Another interesting factor is that Grasso's initial injury did not prevent him from playing again - he returned and played 12 games. Did UNH report a re-injury after the MC game or over the winter break? Or did they shut him down due to 'nagging circumstances'? He also recorded his best game of the year (1-1--2) in his final game against Merrimack. It would certainly help a UNH appeal if they have real documentation of a re-injury that proved season-ending. Certainly more so, than an argument that he was playing (and producing) but the injury was still incapacitating. If their documentation is still the first injury - and ruling him incapacitated 12 games later - that makes their case much more shaky...

I don't think its a slam-dunk - but UNH clearly does, based on what the admin is telling people close to the program and surprisingly shutting him down immediately after 12 games played. We'll see. Lets hope they are doing more than assuming some key points...

Re: UNH Commits & Recruiting: 2017 and Beyond

I have no predictions on wins and they will not be bringing coach Umile back to get those last 4 wins. Thanks Watcher for giving Souza some time to sort out the future. Chuck, thanks for the catnip post as you have been on the board forever and are a true fan. I am sure we will see you at the games next year. I will leave tickets at the will call window for you and the family. We have gone downhill since you stopped attending games. Merrimack playoff games were the only times I have seen you out and about over the past few years. Get back to the rink.

Best to all

Holy cow - I have a stalker!?!?! :eek: :eek: ;)

Truth be told, '32 ... I'm spoiled, I suppose. The kids were young in the early days of The Whitt, and going to games as a family was some of the most fun I had with the kids (though Mom has never been a hockey fan). Full houses, good if not great teams, terrific atmosphere ... there was no better place around here to enjoy quality entertainment/competition. Hey, I didn't even block the kids' ears during the old profane cheers - and amazingly, they turned out just fine. Both went to UNH, and one may have even been a student of yours in recent years. :)

As they've gotten older, I've lost my best excuses to go to the games ("Hey, the kids want to go, you gonna take 'em? No?? OK hon, I'll take one for the team!" ;) ) which, as folks who've been around long enough will attest included many road games in the good ol' days. But things change, and it hasn't quite been the same with the UNH program either. I've been able to fill that time with other things, and I'm guessing many other inactive UNH fans have done the same. Nowadays, I'm lucky if one of the kids invites me to join them at the HE Semis, which we've done the last couple of seasons (even without UNH being there). It's nice to know they also have fond memories of the times we spent chasing games all around New England.

If I thought my missing these games was part of the downfall, I'd probably still find a way to go. Personally, I blame it all on the collapse of the Old Man of the Mountain up in Franconia Notch, which happened a month after UNH's 3rd period collapse to Vanek and the Gophs in the 2003 D-1 Finals. :(

I really do hope you're right about Coach Souza. We're not getting any younger. Be well.

Re: UNH Commits & Recruiting: 2017 and Beyond

I'd put UNH's odds at getting Grasso back in the positive - after hearing SO many connected to the AD certain that he'd get his Waiver, I wanted to know why and did some more research. I found one key bylaw that I earlier missed. This bylaw states that any fraction of a game as determined by the 30% rule would be rounded up to a full-game. If that is true - even from as low as a 0.1 fraction then Grasso only needs to get his denominator to 37 games to qualify. I don't find clear evidence in the bylaws that UNH can get there - but I think there is definitely room for an appeal....

X game. * 1 Exhibition Game

Your information and math are right on the money but I'm betting that Grasso gets an exception and therefore a Red Shirt year. Exceptions and presidents are hard for bureaucracies to grant but fingers crossed.

Much more measured off-season summary from you this year, 1932, which I appreciate. And, I agree with some of what you write this time, in that I think that we will be better next season than last, especially if Grasso comes back healthy for the full season. I am less concerned about a red shirt year, as much, much more needs to be done on the recruiting front for the 2020-2021 roster regardless. But, for this coming season, it seems to me that we should be improved in several areas, especially with two better seasoned and promising sophomore D-men, some decent juniors and sophomores on the top two lines, and perhaps better goaltending than we have had the past four years. I even think that we might have a good chance at home ice for the MBPBEGAM round; you heard it here first. :-)

Some of us are still holding out hope (however slim it may be) that there will no longer be a MBPBEGAM round anymore

With the understanding that Grasso's 12 games played is really just 11.1 GP for accounting purposes - Id agree with you. And if I was wagering, I'd expect he does get his waiver. Which is good for him and good for UNH. The fraction bylaw is a huge win for student athletes - and it's nice to see NCAA rules that lean in that direction once in a while. It is crazy to me though, that without this rule he'd be nowhere near qualifying due to playing 12 games instead of 11 - as if there is some substantial difference. I suppose you have to cut it off somewhere, but...

UNH will be better next year - if for no other reason than there is nowhere to go but up. The goaltenders will be much more talented and hopefully an honest competition will bring out the best in both of them. Their size, lamented by some, will allow them to cover for more team mistakes and reduce the number of long shots through screens that end up in the back of the net. Conversely, they will make less acrobatic saves. All told, less pucks should end up in the net...

Thanks in large part to the top three defensemen. Another year of experience, ability and strength for Wyse, Gildon and Maass will turn those three into the undisputed strength of the team. If one of Boyd, Verrier or Green can give them steadiness at the fourth D spot - the defense will be reliable and with the top three delivering O. Those are your top-six IMO (play the youngsters), but Dawson is a wild card. He has experience that the two FR do not and he has the upperclass card (will things change in that regard?). I do not expect Bahn to make his way to a UNH as an 18 year old next August...

The key for UNH grabbing home ice is the offense. Scoring goals was the biggest problem this season. I am a big MM and SE fan, but the team loses nothing that is irreplaceable. Still UNH cannot 'hope' for breakouts from its upperclass - they NEED them...

Grasso, Blackburn and Nazarian must give them - at least - Block/Herrion/Correale type breakouts (meaning 15 goals a piece) or the team will be in trouble again. Kelleher has to make a big step and Crookshank has to be ready immediately. Another recruit or BVR/Vela/MacAdams needs to emerge enough to give them two dependable and consistent lines. If the team can score they will finish 5-8. They should simply be better - if they are not hosting in the first round that would be a big red flag...

---

BC and BU will be the class of the league. They will be young and, BU in particular, loaded...

PC will be just behind - always in the mix with Leaman...

UML and UM are ahead of UNH. Watch out for UMass next year with it appearing likely both FR defenseman will be back.

UNH will be right in the mix with Maine, UConn and UVM. Probably behind ME and ahead of the other two. UC loses Letunov, nine SRs and maybe Masonious. They'll be very young. UVM will be the same.

Merrimack is destined for the basement.

Northeastern is the wild card - it would not shock me if they have built a bit of something and remain in the top half. Nor would it surprise me if they lose Gaudette, Sikura, Stevens AND Davies and plummet to the bottom with an entirely neutered offense...

I would think another of Cox’s tweet would get your attention. ‘99 Finn Vilho Saariluoma decommitted from Union. Had 52 points for Cushing

You definitely have my attention but I think Snively65 would especially be interested in this news!!
