Re: UNH commitments/recruits for 2010 and beyond

Watcher, do they have Laleggia, Knodel and Agosta all slated to matriculate in 2010? With only 1 d graduating this year and Ansel listed as F/D, that leaves 9 d on next year's roster plus Ansel. Of course there's a good chance Laleggia goes WHL, Knodel can't get into school and Agosta goes back to roller skating and we're left with three run of the mill USHL d-men when it's all said and done

Re: UNH commitments/recruits for 2010 and beyond

Don't laugh, the WHL is pushing hard for Laleggia.

The BCHL site listed him variously as a '10 or '11 recruit. I have to think his talent would allow him to play right away, but that his family may want to hold him back another year (last year he went back to Midget rather than play up in the BCHL ). Then again, maybe that bodes well for him vs. the WHL.

Ansel-Ivens-Anderson-Defenseman/Forward is not a true defenseman, so they only have 7 this year. With Krates leaving, they could bring in 3 guys. Of course, Kessel could leave early, too. Kessel and he would be a deadly PP duo.

Lellegia starts the season off with a PPG and 3 helpers.. Not bad for a 5'10" 17yr old D-Man..
http://www.bchl.bc.ca/leagues/commitments.cfm?clientid=1413&leagueid=2393 BCHL site has Lellegia as a '10 and if the this is how he's going to play, I'm not sure aht another yr in BC would do for him.

Not to be out done. Cam Reid makes his presence felt in their opener, putting up the same 1-3-4. Downing also put up a 1-2-3 line..

Scott McDonald?? Cam's linemate.. another 17yr old, a 4 point night.

Great results for those boys so far. Too bad Downing and Reid aren't playing on the same line. Hopefully in time.

The sooner the better for Laleggia he is one of "THE" recruits.

Re: UNH commitments/recruits for 2010 and beyond

For all the crap I heap on the staff, their model of getting BCHL kids before they enter the league has been top notch. There's no way they get Laleggia or Downing away from North Dakota or Denver if they hadn't come east during midgets. You see Nebraska jumping on an unknown 16 year old trying to do the same thing.

At what point are they comfortable jumping on other 16 year olds in BC?

Can Laleggia speed up his schooling and come in January?

I definitely don't pity these recruiters having to sell not only UNH, but college hockey as a whole to these 16 year old Canadian kids for whom the CHL is usually the first choice.

That and they are banking on a continued development. If the kid gts to 17 and levels off (or regresses) there is a problem.

As we saw this summer they are also banking on schooling progressing without issues.

I wonder what impact JVR's time at UNH will have on recruiting. In general, opinion seems to be he fell short of expectations. If he had really shone, if his game had developed more, would the committments have stuck?

I don't know the first thing about how the Bourque family makes decisions. However, I'd guess one consideration is if a program makes already outstanding players even better. Now, it's not clear that the hockey program at UNH is responsible for JVR's just-above-average-with-glimpses-of-great-ness for two seasons but seems an easy thought for a recruit to have.

All that said, the player in question is having a great camp with the Flyers.

UNH may get a little reflected glory yet...

Interesting analysis.

The level of expectations for JVR's time at UNH were astronomical. My guess is that he believes he got pretty much what he expected during his two years at UNH. He grew into his body, he got to flaunt his strong suit, which is to make something happen while controlling the puck, and he avoided a couple years of getting the crap beat out of him by some 32-year-old guy from the Lake Erie Monsters. From what the Flyer's coach said yesterday, it seems the jury is still out on his ability to do what he is supposed to when he is away from the puck.

The valid question you have raised is whether the 07-08 and 08-09 Wildcats, in particular, and the UNH hockey program in general got what they needed from JVR. I don't know - he sure was fun to watch.

I could be wrong, but I am under the impression that the question raised was whether he got what HE needed from UNH (judging from the context talking about recruiting impact).

Re: UNH commitments/recruits for 2010 and beyond

I would say JVR got what he wanted from his two years here. If he thought his first year here was a waste, he would've signed instead of coming back for seconds like Paul Holmgren wanted him to. He improved his skating and added a few pounds of muscle. Given the personnel(or lack thereof) of the 07-08 and 08-09 teams, he was forced into playing center, and thus got more time carrying the puck which helped him develop his puck skills. He has said that he wanted to win a National Championship at UNH, but that goal pales in comparison to what a kid like that would like to accomplish in hockey.

Re: UNH commitments/recruits for 2010 and beyond

I would think he got what he wanted from UNH. One of the reasons he wanted UNH was the large ice surface so that he could work on improving his skating. One of the quotes I have seen from Flyer's management as JVR has tried to make the team was that they were impressed with his skating. I'll see if I can find the article and link it.
