UNH At The Starting Gate....

Re: UNH At The Starting Gate....

That's certainly a mixed message... you can almost always have a Saturday/Sunday series.

IIRC, when my wife was at UNH, they never cancelled anything for snow, but they did shut-down for a day due to cold. Must be truly awful up there. Be careful kids.

A few years back a UNH professor died on the way into campus. Since then they've been a bit better about curtailing operations.

Re: UNH At The Starting Gate....

Just got off the phone with an old teammate who scouts for the NHL...he says he was going to go up to Dartmouth for the St. Lawrence game to see Joe Marsh but the roads are so bad that he'll make it Durham instead.....me? I live 10 miles down the road from UNH but the woodstove is cozy and the game is online so no, I won't catch my buddy at the Whitt tonight.....Nuts!

Tough way for the school to learn a lesson.

I remember there were floods during spring finals in '06 that cut off the routes of a lot of UNH commuters take into Durham. There were almost no allotments made for students from many professors. There were plenty of INCs, 0's, impossible make up exams, oral exams going around, along with a few dead cars on washed-out roads. It was unpleasant to be around.

Re: UNH At The Starting Gate....

2nd Semester Progress Report (to date)
MVP: Matt DiGirolamo - Gives the team a chance to win every game.
Rookie of the Year: Kevin Goumas - Going away.
7th Player Award: Connor Hardowa - Solid D-Man + Utility Forward.
Most Unassisted Shots On Goal: Stevie Moses (followed by Henrion).
Best 2-Way Player: Mike Borisenok - He, Moses & Goumas have been the best line.
Worst Luck Trophy: Greg Burke - Shoulder in a sling again.
Playing While Hurt Award: Blake Kessel - Still contributes in offensive end but struggles to keep up in neutral zone and defensive end on his gimpy leg.
"What Ever Happened To?" Award: Paul Thompson - When Bobby Butler began to receive serious consideration for the Hobey Baker Award following Christmas break last season, he shifted into a higher gear. Since the Maine series, Thompson has down-shifted.

The team needs to get over the sluggish first period syndrome - NOW.

Spot on analysis, C-H-C. Also, we're 1-2-2 in the last 5 games since Maine -- and winless at home -- not a good trend as we head to the playoffs. As to home ice advantage, we're 5-4-1 at the Whitt (and the VC) since the New Year. The second semester isn't playing out the way the first did -- let's hope this "progress" report represents the nadir of the term.

Re: UNH At The Starting Gate....

What? No award for:

"Shin Sniper Award" - Kessel- This dubious honor is highly competitive, among D men yr after yr.
"Puck Watcher" - Reserved for a special Sr. classman who has earned the right for everyone else to do the dirty work!

ok- enough negativity.
First 30 minutes last night was not much fun to watch. But Kudoos to that 4th line! Even befor Hardowa joined them. They were fantastic- high energy, all night long- aggressive forecheck- they even had a transition game! Sorkin and Silengo could be an exiting pair for a few yrs perhpas.
Mike Sislo- showed, when UNH seemed to desperately need some, great leadership last night in the 2nd period- about 10minutes into the period. He was in the offesive end below the red line and tangling with a D man- Silso, essentially threw the D man to the ice, then skated to the other corner and fought for the puck - the next 6-7minutes were a feeding frenzy for the 'cats in the NU zone. This included, I think, an entire shift where the 4th line stayed in the NU zone. I think it was about 8 minutes into the 3rd before NU got a shot on net as well. Nice work, Mike-

And he's been that way all year. What a great kid. He's not walking around saying, "I am an icon."

Re: UNH At The Starting Gate....

Coach Umile made a gutsy and, in retrospect, effective decision to move Paul Thompson to the third line. It could not have been an easy decision for him given how much he respects his seniors. Also, it wasn't just that he moved Thompson down - he altered the lines to play to strengths. Adding Thompson to Henrion gave him two snipers on one line. Moving Speelman to the 1st line gave him another puck control guy to go along with DeSimone. The forechecking of Speelman-DeSimone-Sislo was much more effective. Plus, Speelman is a much better defensive player than Thompson so the 1st lines' +/- had to improve. Only downside was Connor Hardowa didn't play center.;)
Will be interesting to see if the lines remain the same when Friday night rolls around.

Agreed, and pleasing to see. Ironically, however, Thompson was on the ice with DeSimone for one goal, and Sislo for both.

I also think that it was good to give this team a bit of a jolt... they had become a bit complacent and I really think this sort of jump-started them. They played a full 60 for the first time in what seems like forever. Coincidence? Nope.. I think the line juggling had something to do with that. Also, the boys have been here a bunch and know we are getting down to crunch time. Time to ratchet up the intensity.

I go into EVERY season wanting to win the regular season title. It is the first best measure of a team's actual strength and it happens over the course of the full season so there are no flukes. You win a regular season crown and you are the best. The playoffs and NCAAs are the cherry on the top of the sundae. You need a good chunk of luck to go your way to win there, and if you do, kudos. But, I do rate the regular season right up there as you have proven your worth over 27 games vs every team in your league (3 games vs each). Hopefully, UNH can wrap up the league crown next weekend and take the #1 seed into the H.E. Tourney and let the chips fall where they may...

Re: UNH At The Starting Gate....

So, UNH gets the top seed with a win in either game next weekend. With a point (or BU losing a point) they get at worst the 2 seed (which I think is huge, avoiding NU in the quarterfinals.)

Maine and Merrimack cannot catch UNH so the worst they can fall is 3rd place.

Is it me, or does this edition of the Wildcats seem to, for the most part, play better on the road, on a smaller rink?

Ahahahahhahahahahah.

Every year you come up with some absolute gems when it comes to quotes about the regular season title.

This one might take the cake, though!

I hate to be the first to take the bait from (oxymoron alert!) an insufferably charmless BC fan, but I will. Malts, you're right -- playing 27 games against your 9 conference opponents, and ending up the regular season on top, is an accomplishment and a testament to your team's grit. Of course, it doesn't have the same stature as winning post-season tournaments, but certain things need to fall in place for that to happen, and there is often some luck involved. Ending the regular season on top of a tough conference such as Hockey East is a difficult achievement -- and if UNH isn't that team this year, then congratulations to BC in advance.

Oh it's a tremendous accomplishment for sure. I would be thrilled if BC won it. But... it's hilarious to write what this guy writes every year. Of course, postseason success is luck. I guess BC just must be the luckiest team in the world and UNH the unluckiest. Uh huh.

I do find it hilarious that someone could write that and then write in their signature the number of Stanley Cups their favorite NHL team has won. I would have expected to see Detroit President's Trophy seasons listed instead.
